Mercato - Mission Ratings and Reviews
We were unable to get a reservation so we sat at the bar where you have the same menu options as the restaurant. The atmosphere was great.
The restaurant has been family owned for 40 years and all were there. Everything was great except for the service, it took 45 minutes to get two pasta dishes. Great place but one star for major service failure.
1st time was a lunch with a group of 4 and 2nd time was a dinner date with the gf. All the portions are huge and perfect for sharing (and for getting well fed) the steak is legendary (had it with the mushrooms and they are delicious!) and the appetizers are amazing! Worth every penny!
We love Mercato...when we can get in. Our youngest daughter identified Mercato in Mission as the place she wanted to dine for her 15th birthday. We wanted to ensure we got in, so we made a reservation. The meal did not disappoint.
The food was delicious. Fresh ingredients, timely service...the food came hot and tasty, but did not come to us fast or rushed. We took our time and ate a 4 course meal that was very memorable. And our waiter, Dino, from Dublin, Ireland was fantastic.
But don't try to get in without a reservation. This place has been there for years and is still busy ALL the time. A real gem.
The menu was difficult to understand. We are on a low-carb diet and we ended up ordering pasta thinking it was something else. The pasta dish was only average. We then ordered the rib steak, waiter told us to order it medium rare, it came blue, they then finished cooking it. It was too large for us to eat, There was a large rib that we had not touched. Plus it took so long we had to leave, so we asked to take it with us. They brought us someone else's leftovers not ours, so I just through it away. Chairs were uncomfortable, the tables so close you could hear the next table chew. Our waiter was not attentive, really a lousy and expensive experience.
I liked the atmosphere of this place. Clean, well decorated, with smart floor plan and many tables available for customers. We had a brunch and our server Lauren was very helpful and friendly to ensure we made a right choice when selecting and combining our dishes. Pasta was superb! Bistecca was incredibly juicy and scrumptious. And chicken liver as an appetizer met our expectations! We will be back again.
I have traveler a great deal and enjoyed many a fine meal however I have never been served by someone like Brady. He made a special night with someone an epic experience that will never be forgotten.
Haha, I almost forgot the food was equally as amazing as the service, truly great dining experience.
Thank you so much for the evening!
Took my parents to Mercato this week and everything was perfect. The server picked the right wine for my parents on their preference and recommended the rib steak to share with a couple sides. Was absolutely an amazing dish and we left very impressed.
The only feedback I have is that the tables should be upgraded - ours were wobbly which was a bit annoying.
I must learn to order the bistecca as a first course so I am not so full when it arrives! The bruscetta and caprese salad were excellent. Then we had a pasta course, both were good but neither exceptional. Finally the bistecca. At that point bistecca for 2 fed 4!
Another great evening!
From the moment we arrived as newbies we felt comfortable and Laura our server was so helpful in explaining the amounts of food for each family style item on their diverse menu. Foccacia with olive oil and balsamic and a small bowl of two types of olives made for a great start. Mussells to die for and the best pasta and sauce we've have had in Calgary. What a delightful dining experience. Got a healthy appetite and enjoy good food? This is a can't miss!
Mercato is great - went for a family member's birthday celebration. Unfortunately, the birthday person is also a diabetic, and not having any sugar-free options other than water did put a bit of a damper on things (we were told the sparkling water is also sweetened, which seems odd to me - so still water it was for most). Not a terrible thing, just good to know for next time. We had to ask a couple of times to have a jug left behind, which is odd. The food was fabulous - the antipasti platter to start is great for groups with diverse tastes...
Enjoyed the dining experience common in Italian restaurants now of sharing all ordered items with the whole dining party. Great bruschetta - 3 different kinds. Gnocchi was excellent as was the halibut. Each order was enough to share with 4 diners.
Love the idea of the accompanying market, although it was closed for the day when we were there. Will go back to check it out!
This was the second time I have shown up for a reservation made on Open Table where Mercato did not have the reservation. I had the confirmation with me on my iPhone. They did seat us at the bar to begin with, then moved us to a table once one came available. Service at the bar was poor. Service at our table was excellent, as was the food as always.
First off the restaurant was very warm and uncomfortable. We were a party of eight and one of the couple's received their entrée about 20 minutes before the rest of us. It was steak and was quite good . The rest of the party waited 20 minutes for their entrée the vegetables came first 10 minutes before the entrée, the asparagus was under cooked, the green beans were excellent. The lamb finally came and it was average at best and was rubbery. Overall the experience was not good. We are long time customers of Mercato's but it will be some time before we will be back.
My partner and I went to Mission restaurant for the cerebration of our first anniversary. We saw some really good reviews and wanted to check it out. I booked a table for two online, very easily, and received a call the day before to confirm the reservation. Arriving at the restaurant we were taken to our table. They have selected a table for us inside, and as we noticed the ambient sound was a little too loud, we asked if we could take one of the free tables we have seen on their patio. We were moved without hesitation. The food was great, good size dishes and reasonable price. We were even served by a really nice guy, who made sure we understood the menu and also gave some plate-combination suggestions to make sure we would not order too much food. We are recommending the restaurant to our friends and we are for sure going again.
Travelling into Calgary from out of town, I asked a local friend for a restaurant recommendation and Mercato was at the top of the list. I booked through Open Table fairly early as I heard the restaurant was popular. Someone from Mercato phoned the day ahead to confirm, even though it was long distance and I appreciated that. The three of us were seated at a long bar like table but did not have anyone directly beside us. The waiter, I hope I heard it right, Tim?, was awesome, explaining the concept of the restaurant and menu. We ordered the swordfish carpacchio which looked pretty with fennel, jalapeno and nuts, but was a little underwhelming for taste. Our main was the Beef Steak(much larger than a single serving), the house made daily pasta special and the wrapped asparagus. All were excellent but especially the beef which was perfectly seasoned and almost melted in your mouth. Our service was attentive and yet not invasive. Water and wine was kept topped up and our water checked in at different times to see how we were doing. When I first looked at the menu costs I wasn't sure how affordable it was but given the sharing concept, it worked out great. It's fun to see the open kitchen and given another opportunity to visit, I would request seating at the chef's counter. Just be aware that many of the tables are not traditional dining table seats and if you do not want to sit in a higher bar seat, make a mention of it at the time of booking. Great meal! Will try and go back next time I am in town.
The food is wonderful! A lovely patio to enjoy a long lunch with a friend. Our server was very attentive. One of my favourite lunch spots. A glass of pinot grigio to go with our choices of caprese, cannelloni and grilled asparagus. I especially enjoyed the asparagus. It was perfectly crisp, wrapped in prosciutto. We shared every dish so we would have room for dessert. I always finish up with the light, mellow and not overly sweet tiramisu.
Picking Mercato for my anniversary was an easy choice - it has great reviews! While the food did not disappoint, the service left us upset, frustrated, and put a damper on our celebrations.
Our waitress stopped by our table a total of 5 times over a 2.5 hour dinner. Once to fill up our water, once to take our drink and food order (at once), once to drop off the food, once to bring a knife to the table, once to bring the check.
We chose to order the lamb and was warned it would take 45 minutes to make - not a problem, but she didn't drop by once in that 45 minutes to see if we wanted a refill or more bread.
When the food arrived, I realized that the pesto had pine nuts and I had an allergy (this was my mistake, I forgot to mention). Trying not to be picky, I mentioned this to her, and said I can scrape the pesto off of the lamb. She proceeded to drop by with an extra knife; never came back while we dined to see 1) how the food was or 2) check to see if I was still breathing with my allergy.
Once we finished eating, she was very speedy to pack up our food and hand over the cheque - no dessert menu or refill was offered even then - and we would have purchased one of both.
As diners, we felt overlooked and an after-thought. The food was amazing, but unfortunately the hardwork of the kitchen was overshadowed by some very lackluster service at Mercato. We will not be returning.
We go to mercato's every Sunday as an adult family who love food. We like mercato's because the food is great and it is less ostentatious than some of the restaurants that just try too hard to be hip and cool. Our staples are caprese salad, mussels and bistecca for entree, along with a different choice of pastas each week.
Service is a hit or a miss. Two weeks ago the service was amazing. Last week was a disaster. They must've been short staffed because it was one grump lady for the entire restaurant.
Metcato is a regular go to spot for me. Service and food are always great. Such was the case this time except for one thing: the artichoke. I love artichokes and the preparation on this one sounded good. It looked great with the leaves in a brown bag and the heart nicely grilled. But looks can be deceiving. The leaves were inedible. Pass on the artichoke and enjoy the caprese salad and a huge serving of rich pasta - both excellent.
