Ambiance was nice and there sangria was delicious.
The food is great, especially the suckling pork entree. I think the two-tops are tight and I saw them seat several groups at too-small tables (but I assume the crowded together parties did not mind). I personally like a little less noise and more room, but if that does not bother you, the food is worth it. Wait staff was especially nice and attentive. We would go back again.
From what I understand, the restaurant is under new management and it is very apparent. My husband is Spanish and Mercat used to be our favorite Spanish restaurant in Chicago. However, now the food is not at all authentic and the quality has dropped dramatically. We are so very sad
We were celebrating our 6th wedding anniversary. Our entire meal was memorable. Some of the highlights were the tinto sangria, the house gin and tonic, Serrano ham and gig salad, the garlic shrimp and the short rib dish. The arroz can leche was a great little bite of sweet. We also had the chocolate torte which was deeply chocolate and delicious. We were seated at s table overlooking Grant Park and the view was wonderful.
There were a couple dishes that were too salty - shrimp and potatoes brava. We did the tasting with wine tasting g which was an excellent value but took too long between courses - or at least what MOA Americans are used to - 8:00 pm start and 11:00 pm finish. The server did an excellent job. Some of my party were not used to that length of meal. Fantastic wine pairing. Maybe I wouldn’t “sell” the chefs menu to the group or prepare the table that the meal could take 3 hours. I think most at my table would have been happy to order their own meal and have the meal over in 1.5 hours.
The food was excellent and the service was prompt, polite and attentive. I had a bourbon based drink called La Pedresa(sp?) that was great.
Nice place for authentic Catalonian food.
My family and I went for Mother's day brunch. The food was very good with generous entree-sized portions (omelette, hangar steak) and the dining area is absolutely gorgeous! The only slight negative was that our waitress took longer than expected to take our initial order even though the restaurant was not close to full at the time. Other than that, solid dining experience.
La Paella de Carne from the brunch menu was out of this world. I wish there could be lunch options not just brunch if you eat by noon.
We had a wonderful dinner, and we truly appreciated the team accommodating a shelfish allergy deliciously in the paella.
A remarkable experience from service to food. I also found the price reasonable-just a completely perfect dining adventure. I would recommend ordering every small plate and copious amounts of sangria. A perfect mixture of food and wine complemented by a casual yet upscale elegance that will elevate any meal.
The chef we had wanted to experience had left and the food did not meet our expectations.
We tried the Chef Tasting Menu with Wine Pairings. The 4-course meal was pretty good with various options for each course. Wine pairings were spot on for each course as well. A couple very delightful dishes like the bacon wrapped dates and spicy potato tapas. The main course steak was good, not great. The sauces that came with it were very good. Overall the dinner went well with great service. The value is where I knock points. I knew coming in this would not be cheap by any means, however the price point just didn't align to my overall experience. I recommend a must try, just maybe not a frequent dining experience. Next time I will order the tapas I know are very good and eliminate some of the additional options in the Chef Tasting Menu that were not worth it in my mind. Will go again.
I LOVE Mercat!!! This is my 10th time here and by far my # 1 Favorite Chicago Restraunt, the Barcelona feel, the location in the gorgeous Blackstone Hotel and by far the amazing, delicious and innovative food keeps bringing me back!
It was my honey’s b-day and we are heading to Spain next year to live for 6 months...... I had to bring him here to start our “Spain experience”........The staff is outstanding and our waitress was awesome as usual!
Mercat keeps getting better with age, like fine wine!
I highly recommend this Chicago Gem!!!!
A True Foodie.......
Great space, wonderful food. Can't go wrong with the chefs menu.
Possibly the most tender and best prepared octopus I’ve had. Love their house marinated olives and innovative cocktails.
Great food! Service except our waiter was great!
We went this past week for my wife's birthday and had wonderful food and amazing service. We've only been there twice, as it's not inexpensive. But it's well worth it for a special occasion. Highlights: the Spanish meats, the olives, and the shrimp. Also, I'm a gin and tonic fan and their custom version was truly outstanding. I would go back and sit at the bar to have another one of those.
Very disappointing. I came here about 2 years ago and enjoyed small plate after small plate, such great diversity of flavors. They're changed the decor and it's gone from flashy to drab. The menu was a pathetic 2 pages of printer paper with poor choices. We ordered 5 plates. None were even remotely remarkable. The dates were tasty but 4 shriveled dates for $10 should embarrass them. Service was fair. We will not be back.
The dining experience was perfect as always. This is a Chicago gem.
Awesome meal but disappointed that the marshmallow dessert was taken off the menu! BRING IT BACK PLEASE!
Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere- and the creative menu.
We arrived early and were not made to wait. The room was comfortable, but loud. Our server was knowledgeable, helpful, and delightful...never intrusive. The food was interesting, salads not overly dressed, and wonderfully flavorful - as was everything we ordered. This restaurant is a definite keeper
Great experience. The food was outstanding, the waitress was great and very attentive. She was very cognizant of our time restriction and staggered the small plates perfectly.
Our waiter Dante made our experience. He was so helpful, knowledgeable and patient. Our food was delicious- everything he recommended we loved.
The restauarant is technically part of a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel (The Blackstone), but it has a character and style all its own. There is no chance of this looking and feeling like a generic hotel dining room.
There are many possible combinations one can create, depending on size of group, hunger level, curiosity, and budget. A dozen or so creative Tapas selections are available, plus 4 or 5 paella dishes, hearty meat entrees, sizeable dinner salads, and other large-ish appetizers.
Food is excellently prepared, and modest not only in portion, but also price. Service was very quick, but not rushed, and the server was very helpful in guiding choices. The manager told us that the bacon-wrapped dates have been on the menu for the entire 10 years the restaurant has been open, and our feeling is that their place on the menu is secure for another 10.
Amazing service, we went for an anniversary and they gave us all kinds of complimentary plates, highly recommend!
Great food and service was amazing. Great view as well.
Surprisingly good food. Much better than reading the menu on line. All dishes were excellent.
We were in Chicago for a weekend and wanted to grab some small bites on a Saturday evening. We weren't in the mood for a full course so we just ordered a bunch of tapas. 8 plates for 2 people. It was spectacular food . The garlic shrimp tapas were so good we ordered a second one. We were a little disappointed with the dessert. We ordered the creme brule or a variation of it, it was good but I've definitely had better.
With a reservation, the host made me sit at the bar and wait for my friends who I later discovered had been seated without me on my reservation... Then, the food was slow and we had to ask for two dishes to be removed from our order when they never showed up. It's too bad, but the service has been sketchy each time I've been there. I am not inclined to go back.
Service was very friendly, food was very good nice wine selections
Early dinner with out-of-town friends before a 7:30 curtain. Very quiet at 5:15, but became more lively as it grew later. Diego was an attentive and warm waiter who gave good advice about wine, food, and quantities--the last was very important when ordering small plates--and sequenced our selections well. Food was uniformly good. This was a return visit for the hosts, but we left puzzled as to why it had been so long since our last visit. A very enjoyable evening.
The food was absolutely delicious and the ambience just right. Naomi was an excellent server and very knowledgeable about the menu. We’ll ask for her next time we go to this restaurant.
Best Spanish restaurant in the U.S. The Secreto Iberico pork is one of the best meat dishes I have ever had.
Overall, the best things were the sangria and that staff. The food and is mediocre and often much greasier than we expected. The exceptions were the olives and the scallop dish - both delicious.
Best authentic Spanish tapas in Chicago. Almost like being in Barcelona! Try the bacon wrapped dates for sure!
Great food, great service. Decor is a bit tired, but not distracting. The bar was dead when we arrived at 7pm on a Saturday, which was a bit unusual. It did pick up as the evening progressed. This place has amazing food, if you like Spanish Tapas. We will be back!!
I visited Chicago April 2-6,2018. Decided to have dinner at Mercat a La Planxa with a friend on the last night of my trip. We had sangrias, mushrooms, albóndigas and crema catalana. I loved everything that night, the delicious food, the drinks, the service, the place... Would love to come back if I ever get the chance!
We have been at Mercat a half dozen times and the food is usually excellent. This time the Polpo (octopus) was a bit rubbery and that was very disappointing. Everything else was very good.
