As usual, Mercat delivers with great food
We had the tasting menu and left the choices in the hands of the chef. Everything was fantastic!
Interesting tapas, lively atmosphere. Nice wauters
We have dined here 10+ times. It is nice to see a specialty restaurant survive in the South Loop. Unfortunately, the service was very slow and they brought several courses that were not ours. This was on a Friday night before several locals shows were playing in the area (ie, they should be better staffed for this). The food was quite good as was there interesting wine selection. I will give them another chance to fix their service. I hope they do because I do enjoy their food and vibe.
Had the family out for dinner before a Performance. Arrived at 545pm for a 6pm table and seated promptly after a drink at the bar. Great Sangria, but $12 a glass. Informed the server of our schedule and how far we had to walk for the 8pm event. Timing was great but then a 35 Minute wait for the $68 paella was really poor. Had ordered it at 6pm so server could figure it out but got it at 7:40 pm and had to move fast. Also, it was remarkably small for the price and too salty. Spoke with the manager as we rushed out but he didn’t care. Too bad because this place has potential.
Very nice, they gave complimentary dessert for my husband’s birthday!
The only thing that could have been better is the table we got. Would have preferred a better table location.
Beautiful space with chandeliers and view of Grant Park. Delicious food. Accommodating to my food allergies. Friendly helpful service.
I finally got a chance to try this place after hearing good things. We went for lunch on a Saturday before a matinee performance. Service was friendly and prompt. Food was very good, but not unique or exceptional (at least what I had). Sangria was great! Would definitely return for a friends get together.
Server was terrible. yelled at us for our order. Food took forever to come. We actually left before we received some of our entrees . Terrible experience. Ruined our night.
We were attending a show at the nearby DePaul theatre, so that's why we chose it. The service was terrific, our waitress was very attentive and very funny, she was awesome! The food on the whole was very good. We ordered a bunch of tapas, drinks, and a paella to share. The rose sangria was delicious! The tapas were perhaps a little slim on the serving size (4 bacon wrapped dates for $10? -- that's like $1 in food costs...) but all very good. However, the vegetarian paella was unedible. It was so salty we could barely eat it. We didn't return it or say anything because we were getting late for our theatre tickets, but I definitely wouldn't orderit again. I brought about 2/3 of it home and added about 4 cups of brown rice, and then it was ok. If we'd had the time I would have returned it. I was disappointed that a spanish restaurant didn't deliver on the one thing they should excel at. This is a gorgeous room, the service was great, and I would definitely come back and stick to the tapas, sangria and maybe a dessert!
We had a great time at Mercat. Only our 2nd time, we enjoyed a lot of tapas dishes and loved all of them. The croquets were our favorite and they went well with an exceptional garnacha we drank all night!
Went there on a weeknight with my wife, and we absolutely loved it!
Great drink menu, and a great selection of very creative dishes.
Highly recommend, and we will definitely go back again soon!
Excellent meal overall. It’s an attractive dining room with subdued lighting. Service was excellent and the food was delicious. The paella easily fed three especially after several tapas. It’s pricey, but worth the splurge.
Great place to meet up with friends and hang out instead of committing to a large meal
Every thing and every body at this wonderful place are, well, WONDERFUL. I particularly like to go before or after an equally wonderful event at Orchestra Hall -- just a brief and pleasant walk south of that venue. By all means, GO!!
Nice Tapas options with a good amount of vegetarian selections. Unfortunately, the most interesting Tapas were out, although we visited on a Sunday afternoon with maybe 4-5 other tables being occupied. The service was very attentive, and they knew how to handle the 3 yr old kid in our part very well. Expect steep price tags!
Not a good experience. Went for brunch and ordered tapas. The tapas menu at brunch is more limited than the dinner menu. Still, the restaurant manage to run out of two of the options we were interested in. As for the tapas we did order, several items were overcooked; one was bland, and another too salty. On top of which, the tapas were way overpriced for the amount of food served. Would not go back.
Fun spot for brunch, friendly service and good portions!
Great food and ambiance
Great meal and service. Ambiance a little industrial, but quite enough to have an intimate conversation. Best Spanish food I've had in Chicago.
Excellent all the way around. Perfect place for dinner before the show. Staff keeps you on time.
We had Saturday night dinner pre ballet. it is a short walk to the theater and the views of Grant Park were quite nice. We asked for a window seat and had the most lovely view of falling snow in the park. We began with a glass of Cava followed by a very good bottle of Tempranillo. Starters were the tomato bread, olives, and bacon wrapped dates. All were excellent ! We really enjoyed the tuna flatbread and a wonderful chocolate dessert. We love Sam the waiter as he is extremely attentive and kept an eye on the time for us. Would definitely recommend !
Amazing food and great waiter. Best Spanish style tapas in the city
Mercat a la Planxa is my favorite restaurant in the world. As always, the service and deluxe tasting menu was amazing. I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone!
Arrived for dinner early, 5:00 as we were attending Chicago Opera that evening and ordered COT special. First courses arrived promptly and were OK. 2nd course was a rubber gristle "steak" and a couple of dry meatballs that took over 45 to 60 minutes to arrive after three pleas to the floor staff for help. (Our waitress had disappeared) The cold tough "steak" that finally arrived was really a disappointment. We were given a couple of glasses of cava to settle us, bur the poor service and really bad main selection were beyond excuse. We've dined at Mercat before, enjoyed it and recommended it to friends. This visit was beyond bad!
We started with a couple tapas dishes shared among four people accompanied by sangria. From there the seafood paella and then the suckling pig, all family style. Just delicious! Kudos.
Not as good as I remembered when I went 3 years ago. Menu is much more abbreviated than before, liquor program completely changed and new chef. Very empty on a Saturday night before VDay and I now understand why after eating there. Service was good but the restaurant has changed for the worse unfortunately.
Tapas menu is a lot smaller since the renovation. Thankfully they still have the bacon wrapped dates!!! Ribeye was one of the best I’ve had.
This was my first experience at Mercat- and it was fabulous. I was blow away by the beauty of the room with its large arched windows. The food was inventive and the service was excellent.
Loved this place! Everything was delicious. Our server was very helpful with recommendations (food and wine). We enjoyed the bacon wrapped dates, the serrano ham croquets, the garlic shrimp, the Succretta (similar to the Pluma Iberia Bellota, a pork tenderloin steak with great flavors) ... and the Cannelloni filled with short rib, farm raised chicken, foie-gras, creamy truffle béchamel. We finished with an Olive Oil cake and Patron XO over ice. Oh so good.
Perfect pre-ballet dinner spot. Small plates for sharing, great views (if you can score a window), lovely staff. We are always asked before dinner if we have to finish by a certain time; then staff cares for timing and gets us on our way at the right moment. We never feel rushed, though!
Very disappointed with the value for the food provided. ??$14 for 3 microscopic pieces of grilled octopus and a few greasy potato slices? The salad was tasty, the service was extremely attentive and the setting is great.
This is my second time there and both times felt the meal was very mediocre...needs a lot of attention to get me back.
Good place for restaurant week menu!
Wonderful! The chef came to our table personally - it was a fine dining experience without the high price
Best server and wonderful Spanish tapas. We loved our evening here.
Simply Amazing ... have been here several times but the last experience was icing on the cake. Our server Doc and the manager simply made our experience that much better. We were lucky enough to stop here during restaurant week, great value for the experience.
We were very underwhelmed by this restaurant. The food was not as unique or outstanding as I expected. The paella was downright boring. Portions were small and we left feeling hungry.
The food was amazing and the service of the staff and managers was great, attentive, accommodating and very nice!! Love this place
The food was really great. I’ve been to other tapas places with the same coworkers and they said far and away you could tell the quality of the food and cuts. We went with the chef’s special tasting.
