Mercat a La Planxa Ratings and Reviews
We’ve been going to Merkar for 11years and this is the first time I’ve been disappointed. I booked a table at the window as I always do and they didn’t bother to reserve it for us. We had an out of town visitor we wanted to entertain. They no longer offer the little tomato toast when you arrive. And the bread offering on the menu was terrible. They don’t offer sangria flights anymore. They changed the presentation of the serrano and fig salad which was a delight and lastly they no longer have the dessert croquettes. I know over time things change but it used to be very packed and it wasn’t on a Friday night. I wonder if they have lost their way.
Mercat a La Planxa remains one of my favorites: food and service are predictably very good. It's one of my go-to restaurants, especially when with a friend who hasn't dined there before. I'm also a fan of the atmosphere, although my friend and I were wedged in to a table that was probably the one extra table management chose to squeeze in. I had requested a table by the window, and they did accommodate my request; so I probably shouldn't complain about being a bit crowded.
From the rose cava to the vegetable paella, our meal was well-prepared and timed to get us to the theatre on time. The olives, mushrooms, tomato bread, and vegetable paella all worked well for our vegan friend. The Boquerones (white anchovies) were delicious - I am often reluctant to order anchovies because I don't like the little bony ones but these were perfect. The serrano date salad came without the serrano but this was quickly rectified by the kitchen. and it was delicious as well.
As a native Spaniard, I am always looking for places that offer an authentic Spanish culinary experience. While the food was adecuate (not spectacular), the portions were very small, incredibly overpriced and the service was less than stellar. We had 3 tapas and a small dish to share and paid over $50 a person (for 2 people)
Our waiter seemed annoyed that we had no questions about the menu (we were both native Spanish) and acted upset that we were not interested in ordering the amount of food he recommended. After that, he was incredibly uninterested in making us feel welcomed and treated us with contempt and disinterest. We received more cordial service from the person filling our glasses of water. I wish I could have left the tip directly to him.
I will not go back. There are plenty of Spanish restuaruants in Chicago with much better food and better service. The only positive thing I have to say is that it's a pretty restaurant with a nice view of the park.
Unfortunately our dining experience this past Friday did not meet my expectations at all. Having been to Mercat previously with a fantastic experience, I was very excited to take my family member visiting from NY to celebrate a most special occasion.
First, our waiter seemed totally disinterested & disengaged from the beginning - which never improved. I don’t think he smiled once.
Second, our 1st course were not timed right...we had multiple dishes coming at the same time & again almost everyone delivering dishes lacked good customer service.
Finally, the main dishes of our meal came out atvkeast 30 minutes late & it was just handled like it was no big deal.
Having chosen Mercat over any restaurant in the city to celebrate our special occasion...I was most disappointed.
I've been to Mercat a couple of times previously and have always enjoyed the food, which was the case with this visit. My companion and I both chose the $49 pre-theater menu and still somehow ended up with a $200 check - expensive drinks, I guess - which was surprising. The food is quite good and I appreciate the fact that it doesn't all arrive at the table simultaneously, so you can really enjoy each plate. All in all, I highly recommend Mercat a La Planxa!
Great service by Mercat. I was there for my fiancee's birthday, and they went above and beyond any expectations. In my opentable reservation I mentioned that we were coming to celebrate a birthday, and from there they did the rest. We were welcomed with a complimentary glass of cava, and they closed with delicious chocolate and ice cream treats with a birthday candle. Dinner was delicious as well, with a very well selected Spanish tapas menu. I loved that the service was very attentive with all those birthday details, but at the same time we never felt rushed. They let us enjoy our meal without coming over every 5 min to ask how everything was tasting. Great place, great location, delicious food and outstanding service. Five stars.
Amazing small bites for dinner with pulpo and potatoes as our favorite..and returned for an exceptional breakfast two days in a row. Had an unfortunate encounter with a rude bartender though. Had called ahead about happy hour and was told 1/2 price sangria until 6. This was reiterated by the host when we got there, but the bartender asserted they NEVER have a happy special. She begrudgingly gave it to us after making belittling remarks. A bad moment, but a great meal afterwards with solid and friendly (thank god) service.
I had tickets to a show at a theater close by, so I thought a dinner by myself beforehand would be a good idea. Dining by myself is always a toss up in terms of service / restaurant ambiance. I had such a wonderful meal and the server was very helpful with food selection and drink selection. I went with the octopus and scallop tapas for dinner, both amazing. Dessert the server suggested a tasty sherry to go with the olive oil cake. Everything was delicious and I felt comfortable dining by myself in the restaurant!
Quite possibly one of the best meals we've had in a while. We were looking for a vegan friendly place to accommodate one in our party of four. This place hit the mark for us all (including one of us who lived in Spain). Can't say enough about the Paella de Verduras, Pimientos de Padrón, Gambas al Ajillo, Patatas Bravas and Setas al Horno. Just the right amount of food to allow for dessert, which was equally amazing. Loved the warm ambiance and the service was outstanding. And don't forget to try one of their handcrafted cocktails. So good! Absolutely on the list of places to return (and next time will add some meat dishes)!
Very good Spanish food and excellent location and atmosphere. Only slight criticism is that I asked how large paella serving was - because I was concerned it would be too much for two if we were ordering other tapas - and was told by waiter that it was a SMALL portion for two. That wasn't true. I would say that if we had not ordered two extra tapas, it would have been the right size, but paella would have been more than enough on it's own.
I am from New Jersey and had never heard of Mercat a la Planxa. I know Paul Zappoli, General Manager from his restaurant's in NJ. Planning a trip with for my family get-together, I contacted Paul.
Oh, what a wonderful evening. Table for 10, in the restaurant, but the feeling was like private dining. We chose the Chef's Tasting menu and it was perfect. The staff, from the greeting to the goodbyes made this a truly special occasion.
