Nothing special. Food quality was uneven. Salad was delicious; the scallops were very rare and very salty.
Food was very good. Many choices and they were all very good. Thank he tuna flatbread and the potatoes were fantastic. Well done.
Food and drinks are good, but table and chairs so old and not stable anymore. Our table and bench was moving like during earth quick. LOL
My most demanding and critical friend from NYC was in town and she was blown away by everything at "Mercat", especially the ambiance and cuisine . She often travels throughout Spain/Catalan for business and pleasure and she heartily approved of the paella, tapas and Spanish wines. On a personal note, this was my first time back to the restauarant after a 5 year hiatus and I was as just as impressed as I was on my first visit about 15 years ago.
Everything on the menu is great. Paella is worth every penny.
We couldn’t make up our minds about dining choices, so tried the tasting menu, which far exceeded expectations. We liked every course save one. Nothing wrong with exception, just a little too rich for our taste. Meal was well paced, service impeccable, server friendly and knowledgeable. Value was great. Recommended to everyone in very large wedding party which included many Chicago natives.
Dependable food and friendly service. lol be the venue.
We enjoyed the tapas and paella, as well as the sangria. The waitress recommended 4-5 tapas dishes with the vegetarian paella and we went with 4. I was with my daughter so it was a lot for two people but there were leftovers which my daughter brought home, always a silver lining.
Lovely service from Katie!
I don’t know why you did not give me points for this reservation. Please explain.
The tasting menu surpassed our expectations in every way, and what a great value for the price - awesome!
We enjoyed a delicious pre-ballet dinner. Great service and well planned prefix menu. Nice wine selection as well!
We have been to Mercat a La Planxa multiple times, the last times before this visit was about eight months ago. I have to say, the restaurant has changed and not for the better. The ambience is less cozy, the food was meh. The Pan con Tomate, for example, was just some sweet tomato mush on a slab of bread, a soggy mess. The octopus was rubbery, and so on. The service was rushed, we were seated around 10:40 pm and did not know that the kitchen would close at 11:00.
Overall, a rather disappointing experience this time. It has lost a lot of its quality and uniqueness that made us come back again and again. Not sure I will go back any time soon.
We had a wonderful evening. Everybody from beginning to end did a nice job. Received the window seating request. Service was well presented and food was as great. I would return and take friends. Thank you...
Three of us shared the delicious tasting menu, and our vegetarian fourth person found several options that worked for her. It was a great place to celebrate a birthday with friends. Service was prompt and attentive. The decor and atmosphere is great. After the meal, we hung out to talk more in the historic lobby of the Blackstone Hotel, where the restaurant is housed.
Very good Barcelona-style food. We over-ordered with 4 tapas for 2 people, so know your appetites before you order too much.
We came here to try the Chefs menu. Two out of the 4 of us ordered it. The dishes were ok but not the best we've had. We were disappointed with the paella. It was very salty and dry with no beautiful crust (socarrat). With all the dining choices available I don't think I'd return.
Nice seating & delicious drinks
This was my second time here. The first time was five years ago and I feel like the quality and creativity has declined since then. We ordered the chefs tasting menu and didn’t really feel like there was enough value for the money. For example, there was no meat course. Also, the paella was stodgy and lacking flavor. On the bright side, the service was great and the restaurant and attached hotel are lovely.
Great food and drinks but it was the service that was most exceptional. Our waiter was dynamite!
This was our first time dining here. We loved it. The tasting menu was actually a good value, though the menu is overall rather pricey. Everything was delicious.
Two of us ordered small plates, two ordered the chef's menu. Everything including the wines was excellent, as was the friendly helpful service.
Upstairs bartender was not welcoming or very friendly. Hard to believe this restaurant couldn't come up with blue cheese stuffed olives for our martinis. The food was good and we were all happy we chose the tasting menu over the specials for restaurant week.
Could not have stumbled upon a better place to enjoy a special occasion. Out of all the food I've had the pleasure of tasting, the paella was one of the most incredible dishes to ever pass my lips. The wine selection proved nothing shy of divine, and our waitress offered a level of service above even the ambiance and quality that the entire establishment bespoke. We will be returning very soon!
Excellent place in the heart of Chicago.
Good food, good ambient.
It’s wonderful all around , food is great , service was excellent and the menu for chicago restaurant week was incredible
Absolutely wonderful experience! The atmosphere was a perfect combination of peaceful and exciting! If you're someone who needs a good atmosphere to enjoy a phenomenal meal, this is the place for you! All the dishes ordered were exquisite!
The service and food were excellent!
Food was outstanding!! Wonderful melding of flavors. Service was great!! We will be back again.
We’ve always had great meals at Mercat. Tapas provide the opportunity to try a variety of flavorful dishes - we had items such as Serrano ham on wonderful bread with fresh tomatoes and olive oil, mushroom croquettes and grilled Iberico pork with cinnamon apple - plus an excellent Rioja. Service was friendly and efficient, and the space, located in an historic hotel, is elegant, comfortable and spacious.
Our reservations were for 6:30, we arrived early about 6:15 and was told that our seats would not be available until 6:30. Okay no worries. Then it was not until 7:00 pm that they were able to seat us. They obviously over booked and in our opinion, handled it very poorly. We ordered the Mercat sampler choice. They almost skipped one of our dishes, fortunately they caught it. The food in my opinion was sub-par for the price we paid. Service was horrible, our waiter was virtually non-existent, but to his credit, he did brink us a wine for our wait. Overall the dinner took about 2.5 hours which is one of the reasons we had to wait so long. The best thing about this place was the decor and ambiance which I gave good ratings for.
We made a reservation at Mercat as part of a date night on Saturday. After arriving 15 mins early and being told we couldn’t be seated until our reservation time, we took a seat in the bar area to wait until 6:15, the time of our reservation. The dining room was filled and the noise level was robust. At 6:20 the same lady who checked us in reapproached and asked if we had reservations and I reminded her she had told us to wait until our reservation time. Now she added it was at least another 45 minutes for a table. She offered seating in the downstairs bar area immediately. My initial reaction was aggravation and feeling like we were getting screwed over from the experience I had intended to have. Fortunately, there was a fantastic server working the lower level bar area named Chris. He was exceptional and salvaged whet would have been a very bad review. The food was excellent. Chris’s service was excellent. The kitchen was painfully slow and it took 90 minutes for the main courses to come out (and it wasn’t paella that we ordered!). Thank you Chris.
we arrived with 6 people and they only had us down for 2! sent us up and down the stairs to figure the seating out due to this mixup. Also it takes 45" to order Paella! So make sure you have enough time. Seemed understaffed. However, food is excellent.
Great place for dinner. You can hear each other talk but the vibe is still perfect.
Always a lovely experience. We've been customers since MLP opened and the restaurant only seems to get better. This time we opted for the "pre-event" dinner menu before a 7:30pm show at the Auditorium. Every item on that menu was a popular choice item which likely helped with the quick service. And every plate was tasty. Combined with a pitcher of sangria and outstanding service, MLP was a great start to our night.
Get the tasting menu! Delicious- and a good price if you want to try everything. Attentive service makes it even better.
Pan con tomate was the real deal... thank you!
Diacos and Luis were great. Food was excellent as well as drinks.
My family got together for the holidays and my nephew is going to study in Spain so I thought this would be the perfect meal together and it was. As a restaurant manager at Bistro Campagne, I can honestly say that everything was perfect. Jane was a spectacular as a server. So attentive and willing to work with us. I appreciated the ease with which the restaurant accommodated a guest with a wheelchair. We will be back!
Food was mediocre at best. Service was inattentive. When we arrived we could not get the hostesses to stop talking to one another in order to seat us so we gave us and went to the bar for a drink then tried again later. Certainly not worth the price tag.
