Mercadito - River North Ratings and Reviews
We were on vacation in Chicago and I needed to find a place quick. We'd already eaten at some places we'd planned to hit up prior to arriving in Chicago, but this night was a toss-up depending on how the day went. I quickly found it on Google Maps, checked the menu, and made a reservation. I was not sure what to expect because I'm not from Chicago, but I needed something close to where we were. I was very pleased with the food, the service, and the atmosphere. They have an incredible array of Tequilas and Mezcals and a great cocktail list featuring them. I have two kids under 3 years old, and it worked out great for them too, despite the amount of spicy items on the menu (my kids don't do spicy). Mercadito was a wonderful experience for our family, and I highly recommend it!
I have been here before for business lunches, which were quite good. This visit, however, seems to have forsaken flavor for the sake of heat. Granted, I'm no fan of tongue burn in general, but it overwhelmed what I'm sure were otherwise culinary treats. Heat is not a flavor, chef.... Even the drinks were overly spiced - I ordered a soda just to put out the flames.
Otherwise, service was fantastic. Even with as much, I don't plan to walk on these hot coals again in the near future.
I used to like this restaurant a lot. But my previous great experience was ruined by the most recent visit on a Saturday morning. The brunch was not great, especially the pancakes. They were lukewarm and after I asked the kitchen to warm them up, they were still lukewarm. I asked for maple syrup and I was charged by $1. The service was also terrible. The waiter was defensive for no reason and told us "You don't want scorching hot pancakes and you didn't pay for them anyway (b/c I used a Gilt City certificate). I did pay for my Gilt City certificate. The whole experience was just terrible. Don't recommend this restaurant anymore.
The food was delicious. The drinks were great...you could clearly taste the tequila in the margaritas. The music was a bit loud but the place had lots of energy. My only complaints were that salsa and chips were a menu item and not complimentary. And, the table bus guys were constantly helpful but grabbed things off the table that we hadn't finished eating.
This was my third time at Mercadito and I always recommend this place to people coming into the city. The tacos are always great, margaritas are fun and tasty, and the guacamole is seriously SO GOOD. Our server was outstanding as well - I wish I could remember her name, but she helped us through the menu and deciding what drinks would be best!
This place is LOUD. Like, really really loud. I was thinking that it would be great to have those headsets that they have for touring Chicago on bicycle tours. You could have a conversation with your table mates without shouting. The food was fabulous. Don't miss the Mexican corn and the swordfish tacos.
We came for happy hour, but were unfortunately told the only availability was the already packed bar (the typical downstairs space was under constructions). Regardless, the Brussels sprouts, carne tacos, and salsa were very good. I got the Ma-hot-Ma mama, it could have been stronger but the flavor was very good. It’s a spicy drink, so if that’s what you like I definitely recommend (with an extra shot of tequila possibly)
Great, Spicy Menu with The Best Music at Mercadito!
We enjoyed a wonderful Sunday night at Mercadito! A varied and authentic menu featuring spicy and comforting foods! Standouts include the carnitas tacos, elote, and flan! Paul, our manager and phenomenal DJ, and, Victor, our server, were so fabulous! Don't miss this hot spot!
Love this place, but this experience was not my favorite. Tables were packed in like sardines, and my date and I had to keep leaning over the table and asking each other to repeat ourselves to hold a conversation, it was so loud. Bc it was so busy, the service was very very slow. We ordered everything at once, but were half way through our appetizer before our drinks arrived. We were 2 drinks in and on our second round of chips before finally asking if our tacos were on their way. They took over an hour. The food was delicious though, I did run out of water a couple times. Things quieted a bit and we were able to hear better once the space cleared out a bit around 10:30. We ordered a third drink when our tacos arrived, but they didn’t come until we were through eating them. Our waitress disappeared, and our empty food plates sat for a very long time before we could finally ask for the check. Luckily we were happy spending time with each other. So the slow and off-kilter service didn’t ruin things, but it would have been nice to have more than one of our three drinks each with the actual meal.
We had a much more pleasant experience the week before, and I’m sure it was just an off night. But for the expensive cost of our meal, I️ was hoping for a little more.
