Father’s Day brunch, great service and great food!

Food, drinks and our server Leah was awesome. The only minor complaint was that it felt really warm inside, with a 90 degree weather it felt little uncomfortable. Overall everything was really good!

We made reservations here based on the high ratings posted on OpenTable and the variety of options on the dinner menu. For a Wednesday evening, the restaurant was really busy- almost every table was occupied by a varied crowd of couples, families, and larger groups. While the noise level made intimate conversation more challenging, it wasn't so loud that shouting at your dinner companions was required. The service was great- there when you needed them, but not intrusive, and always helpful. The food was fabulous! Two members of the family ordered the tacos (smoked brisket for one and pork for the other), another had the carne asada, and the fourth chose the red snapper. All of it was delicious, but the carne asada and the fish were exceptionally good, and the rice & beans were perfect. We found some room for dessert and we weren't disappointed here either- both the torrejas de bilillo and the tres leches were delectable. We don't live in Chicago, but if we did, this would be a family favorite. I guess that explains the near-capacity crowd in the middle of the week.

I will not be coming back to this restaurant. We ordered traditional guacamole, shrimp tacos, rice and beans, the Brussels sprouts and we each had one drink. The drinks and guacamole were great, but unfortunately that’s where the positives end. Our bill was $76 and was not worth near that much. We each ate only one of the tacos because not only did they not look appetizing, but were tasteless - very bland even though they were covered in a lot of sauce. The Brussels sprouts were not cooked thoroughly so they were too hard to eat. Seemed to be steamed, which is not how I like to eat Brussels sprouts. We each ate 2 and didn’t touch the rest. It was very loud in the restaurant, which i was expecting, but both of our throats were sore after dinner because we had to shout to talk to each other. Overall, not a great experience - wish we had just stuck with the drinks and guac!

The food was good but nothing crazy, and it was just too loud to really enjoy a conversation.

The restaurant is loud. I could hardly hear my husband and felt like we had to yell as we sat and ate our dinner. The drinks were good. I had previously visited Mercadito in April and LOVED the lobster tacos made with hominy & yellow corn, poblano, jalepeno emulsion, and crispy potatoes. However, the lobster tacos they were serving the night we went were made with smoked chayote, pea hash, and grilled ramps. These were not nearly as good as the ones I had previously tried and I was disappointed. Also, the server we had was either new or just wasn't good at his job. He had to come back to the table and ask me which drink I had ordered, asked me on two occasions if we wanted an app (which we stated, yes we did--traditional guacamole, both times) and we never ended up even getting this.

My friend and I went here for a guy's night out. We were able to snag an outdoor table and enjoyed some beautiful June weather and also good people watching. We shared a number of small plates which were all terrific. Our waiter was very attentive, and recommended a fantastic anejo tequila to finish the dinner. I hope to go back soon.

The food was mediocre at best. Had lobster mac and cheese and brussel sprouts, which tasted ok, but had only 1 piece of chewy, overcooked lobster. It was fine enough to eat, but for the money i wouldn't order again. Brussel sprouts were interesting, and the cocktails were good. It's SO noisy and the tables are on top of each other. They also don't move easily, so when our "neighbors" went to leave, their butt literally got stuck on our table for a very awkward moment.

It's an interesting restaurant that is worth a try, but overpriced, meh-food, cramped, and loud. I've gone twice with the same experience and don't plan to go a third. There are much better options in the neighborhood.

A colleague of mine took me here for my birthday lunch because it is a favorite spot of mine and let me say, it was not the best experience that I have had here. Our waitress was not the best and was really kind of rude in our opinion. I am not sure of her name, but I do remember that she had partially pink/purple like hair and was younger. First off we were treated and spoken to like we had never been there after we had told there we had been there several times before. We ordered the same exact "main" dishes that we typically do and they were brought out 10 minutes apart. When I asked where my food was, I was told they come out when they are ready. I said they have never some out at different times before. she went on to carry this out and on and on, which should not be done in my opinion. My drink was then taken without even being asked if I was finished, which I was not. My friend was still eating her food and I was still sipping on my drink. We also had some leftovers, but again , were never asked if we were finished OR if we would like any of it wrapped up. Not to mention the assistant that filled my friends water glass only to turn around, sit the pitcher down and rub his nose with his whole hand. YUCK!!! It was notated on the reservation that it was for a birthday, but nothing was said or done for that. Why ask? Anyway, I felt the need to share this experience because it may keep both of us from ever going back. I have been a server and so was my friend, so we are never rude to staff and understand the business and how things should be done and handled. This situation was not a pleasant one. You would think that a server would be nicer for a $60 plus lunch tab for two with no alcohol.

Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner last Sunday. Food was very delicious and the margaritas spectacular! We started with the traditional guacamole that was awesome! Then we had 3 different plates of tacos. My favorite, by far, was the pollo taco. The corn, fava bean hash, shallots and avocado salsa combined to make a wonderfully delicious dish! The barbacoa was also very good with the watermelon radish slaw. I would definitely recommend Mercadito to anyone trying to get a break from the vast amount of steakhouses in Chicago. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good steak, but this is a very nice break from the normal steakhouse. Great atmosphere and top notch service and again, really good margaritas! I’ll be back next time I’m in Chicago.

Was seated 30 minutes after the reservation time at a table that was empty the entire time we were waiting. There were many tables available, so the need to wait was not clear. Checking in with the hostess desk 3 times yielded the same non answer. I don't mind waiting if the place is full, but when the table was there the whole time it just looks like you didn't want to seat us. Probably will not be coming back.

The food and the service was exceptional. My only complaint was the noise level. My daughters and I sat at a small table and I could not hear them across the table. I also could not hear our server and had to have him repeat himself several times. With that said, the food was worth the noise level. The fresh guacamole, chili rellenos, brisket and shrimp tacos were all superb.

I felt like I had stepped into an episode of Miami Vice from the 1980's. It was loud, the music was disco and the crowd was after-business. My rice and beans was bland, with plain white rice with peas and carrots in it and tasteless refried beans. My wife ordered a Michelada which was unlike any we'd ever had -- the secret ingredient? Worcestershire sauce. Beer and Worcestershire? Yuck. Sent it back. My snapper was edible, but the salsa was again, bland. the presentation was uninspiring as well. They served my Casamigos Anejo tequila in a Hornitos-branded shot glass, rather than a standard liquor glass. Tacky. On top of that, the bussers were dropping and spilling stuff left and right. I was overall very unimpressed given the location and price. There is so much better Mexican cuisine out there. 3 stars max. Max!
