Greek
Merakia, a word that modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, and love, is a restaurant that celebrates this rustic style of cooking, known in Greece as a Psistaria, where meats are either grilled or cooked on a spit. Owners Andreas and Renee Typaldos, with a menu designed by Tassos Ballas -- coming from Greece -- will feature items that would make the starvin armatoloi freedom fighters proud. Steaks will be well represented and served with Greek accompaniments, while lamb, goat, chicken and other meats and fish will be roasted on the spit with a selection of Greek inspired wines, appetizers, salads and desserts.

The restaurant had a beautiful decor n the food was tasty but the service needs some major direction. There were 7 people of us n the waiters were throwing food on the table for us just as it is. We had to ask for some bread at the beginning and exchange the food from each other. Good thing we were in a good mood so it didn’t reflect on their tips but it’s a shame that the management train them well. Too bad they are not going to become next Milos or Avra

The food took a very long time to come out. Although there was a record for our calamari appetizer, it was never brought out until after our entrees arrived. The manager did not apologize to us or offer anything for this mishap. I am an event manager for a hospitality group and noted this on my reservation as well as a birthday. My guest was not even told happy birthday or had a candle in the dessert we ordered. I did like the food however will not be returning based on the service.

Fabulous place with a charming ambience especially the fireplace in winter is amazing. Food was substantial and their service excellent. Will definitely go back

Overall nice experience. I joined my mother and sister for restaurant week. Place was quite noisy that we spent most of lunch screaming at each other. My family seemed to very much enjoy their food. Hot and nice to look at. I got the sea bass. I ended up eating and dissecting my fish choking on and swallowing many bones. Flavor was nice but the bones obviously took away from the flavor. Waiter came off originally as rude but recovered as the meal went on. My mom at ordered one app and quickly changed her mind. We immediately found a bus boy and asked him to tell the waiter the change. The waiter came over and shrugged and said sorry I already put it in the system...minutes later he came over and acted like he did this big favor by walking to the kitchen and asking for the switch. For a Thursday where people are here for business lunches, food took a particularly long time to come out. Rest of wait service was nice and helpful, overall food was good and a very cute looking place.

I brought a group of friends in for a birthday dinner and our waiter was just wonderful to us. Everything he recommended was delicious and he was very charming and attentive throughout the evening. The food was all delicious and my friends kept asking me, "How did you find this place?" Everyone left happy, especially the birthday girl, so I was very pleased. I highly recommend Merakia and will absolutely be going back there myself!

Merakia was a gem. I went because it looked interesting for restaurant week. The service was top notch and the food was fantastic. I am going back for a steak next week. I read some reviews before I went and they were so- so. Sometimes restaurants get packed for restaurant week, a patron should be more understanding and be happy with a great restaurant at reduced prices. Go and enjoy great service and great food.

We went during Restaurant Week. The place is amazing, the food is delicious and the staff are ALL wonderful. The setting is rustic yet sophisticated. The ambiance made us feel like we were eating at a family gathering, the friendliness from the staff was phenomenal. This is certainly a place we’ll go back to.

So sophisticated in ambiance! My son and I go to Restaurant Week every year, and this truly was one of our favorite finds. The menu choices for Restaurant Week was good, and the food portions are better than most. We were impressed with the Vegetable Moussaka!

Of all the choices in NYC, I'm not sure how I stumbled across this place. I'm glad I did. The food was great, the staff gave the right amount of attention and the decor of the restaurant made this a memorable evening with my date.

Ambiance was amazing. We went for restaurant week. Thought the portion for the lamb chop entree was a bit small. Service was not that great, as we had to flag down our server to take our order; also we were not offered coffee with the dessert, so by the time the coffee came, we had finished the dessert. However, the baklava was outstanding! So delicious! Overall, we enjoyed the food and the experience.

Some coworkers and I found this place on the list of places for NYC Restaurant week. I am usually one to steer away from Greek food, as some of the flavors just are not my thing. However, I am glad we came to this place as it opened my eyes to how wrong I was. The food, while slightly small portioned, was perfect for seeing what the place had to offer. The meatball appetizer made my mouth water and the 'burger' (It didn't come on a bun so is it really still a burger?) was cooked to perfection. While I am also not a dessert person, it was included in the RW meal and wow! I wanted to lick the honey off the plate!

Def recommend the place!

The noise level was very very loud. Service was terrible. The main dishes were cold and overcooked. Meal and service so bad we ended up not paying.

We went for the 3-course restaurant week menu. Food was okay, but everything went downhill after the appetizers. Both of our entrees came out wrong. When saying the meat was dry and overcooked, the waiters only reply was "Oh". When asking for the salad, we were told to ask our waiter when he comes. We sat with almost empty water glasses, and completely empty cocktail glasses the entire time. Never asked if we wanted another drink. We waited over 45 minutes between the entree and dessert. All the tables around us had the same issue and were all complaining. We had to ask for the manager several times until someone finally got him. He insincerely apologized, but offered nothing on the house, until we had to flat-out say that we didn't feel good paying such a high bill for such a bad experience. Overall bad experience.

Service was ridiculously slow. We waited almost an hour for our dessert. Then we waited nearly another hour for our check. We had been trying to be nice, smiling, and patient all throughout this. What set me off was when I asked the next waitstaff who passed us (bc really, where did our waiter go?) and as I was asking politely, mid-sentence, he turned away and walked away. And we waited again. I got frustrated that my party's politeness was not effective in getting our point across. So the NEXT waitstaff I hailed down, I stopped the politeness and assertively gave a very stern talking to the man. We even saw another couple right next to us who were seated after us, ordered after we ordered, and still managed to leave before us.

The manager came by eventually and gave the standard hospitality talk, to the point of interrupting me as I was expressing my dissatisfaction.

Here's a tip: take the time to patiently listen to your customer, even if they're irate. Demonstrate that your customer is being heard - DON'T talk over them and interrupt them as they express their feedback. Make sure you listen to all your customer has to say. Don't cut them off. That's mature and advanced hospitality right there. I encourage the manager and waitstaff to take note as this restaurant's service was very immature and sloppy during our time there. Unfortunate.

Went for restaurant week, service and ambience was fine. The cocktail i order (tequila one) was really bad and the food didnt look so fresh, like reheated. Baklava didn't meet my expectatios. They can defenitely do better.

I had high hopes for Merakia as Greek and steak are 2 of my favorites but came away disappointed. My husband and I both selected the Restaurant week menu for our meals. I selected the keftedes, lamb chops, and Greek yogurt for dessert. I also ordered an order of the tzatziki as that's my favorite dip and my measuring stick on how I rate Greek restaurants. Sadly, Merakia's tzatziki was not garlicky enough for my liking. I ordered my lamb chops medium rare and they came to the table well done. They still had great flavor and I noticed other meat plates at other tables definitely were medium rare so I know that they are capable of cooking to requested temperature. It took them awhile to clear our plates once we were done and after waiting at least 10 minutes, our waiter came over and said dessert is on it's way..... 10 minutes after that we were still waiting. We were about ready to just ask for the check and leave when they showed up. Sad to say we will not be returning.

8pm reservation that we didn’t get seated for until 8:25pm for.

They also mixed up orders. Coworker said well done and mine was medium well and they accidentally gave us each other’s orders.

I came for the Restaurant Week menu (I had tried their food at events sponsored by the Flatiron/23rd Street partnership) and the service was friendly and the food was very good. The branzino was excellent as was the phyllo-custard dessert.

Had the prix fixe lunch for $27 - the food was outstanding! There were lovely choices for the 2 courses and I can't wait to go back and try more of them. Also, the interior design has a lovely, exotic feel. Will definitely go back and highly recommend it.

Fresh, simple food. Grilling is forte.
Beautiful ambiance with a fire place in back room. During the day a skylight.
Had a work party here and the service and food were outstanding.

I was disappointed by the quality of Merakia this time around. In the past it's been stellar, but service and food quality seems to have gone down hill.
