We celebrated the beginning of a new business enterprise, and our waiter, Scott, along with the rest of his team, was exquisite. We have been to Melvins many times, and always know it will be a top drawer experience.
The place is fantastic but the food.... well.... I would only come for cocktails and music and maybe the steak with a Caesar salad. Come for the atmosphere but never ever order the oysters!
Thank you for your feedback, I appologize that your dining experience did not meet or exceed your expectations, I can assure you that we take great care and pride in our oyster selection but unfortunately sometimes an oyster of lesser quality can slip into the mix, we certainly hope you dine with us again so we can provide you with a better culinary experience.
The oysters were fantastic! Great taste and texture. The chicken pot pie was delicious. My only recommendation would be to give free bread instead of a charge of $9! Raise your prices on the entrees minimally to offset the cost of the bread. Thanks.
Haven't been here in a few years. Food, Service was the same --- excellent.
We've been fine dining at Melvyn's since 2005. Sadly, since the new ownership, we've seen changes thst detract from the experience we used to enjoy. There is no longer a prix fixe selection and bread & butter is no longer included with dinner! It costs $9.00! The menu items we chose this time (chicken pot pie and lobster risotto) were very good.
Thank you for your feedback, We did unforutunatley remove the year round prefix menu, following suit with the other restaurants around Palm Springs. If you are looking for a prefix menu at Melvyns we definitly recommend you visit us during restaurant week or in August when we will be offering a summer prefix menu. Thank you again for your feedback and we hope to see soon!
Our server Jose was outstanding. The food was fantastic. We had the seafood tower and the Arctic Char. Cocktails were perfect. Great way to celebrate a birthday.
Melvyn's is a gem. Although we had a simple lunch of hamburgers and fries, they were prepared perfectly and served hot. Service was good, but I wish our server had been a bit more attentive and the bar seemed slow.
Although we wish Melvyn’s Sunday Brunch was as it was several years ago when it was a really great value, the Brunch is still a very nice experience with a nice selection of items on the menu.
We were not sure what to expect for my husband's 60th birthday but were not disappointed. The food was basic and they didn't have the table-side preparation due to the stupid Covid impacts but was delicious. The service was prefect and the ambience and seating was very nice and timely. The crowd was mixed in terms of ages and dress which was a nice surprise as we were told the patrons would be a lot of much older people. The decor was basic and elegant with a nice balance of 60's and modern touches. We had a wonderful time and will certainly go back.
Thank you so much for the lovely review! We hope you continue to join us a Melvyn's and rest assured, table side service will be making a come back in the very near future!
Worst food I’ve ever had at a restaurant. Not sure how anyone could give this a good review. Prices are expensive and it was almost inedible. Ambiance and venue makes up for the food. They definitely need a new cook. The wedge was warm and had a bad dressing, the chicken pot pie was horrible, and the fish was over cooked.
Great food, service, and drinks. Love the history of the place.
Wonderful experience all around. Friendly service and great food. Loved the chicken with bucatini along with the bordeaux wine. Definitely returning to this restaurant multiple times in the future!
Great music in the bar and great food with staff who paid just the right amount of attention!
Probably the most fabulous dining experience I’ve ever had. What an iconic establishment. The history of this place is unbelievable. The food was incredible. Can’t say anything else but that it was a perfect evening.
Melvin's was wonderful. It's a beautiful little place that looks very high end but there is no dress code and we felt right at home in our casual clothes. The entire staff was lovely. Super attentive and extremely friendly, including the wonderful Valet guy outside. The food was beautiful and very well prepared. I loved my Lobster Risotto. My daughter had the short ribs and we weren't blown away but they were good. We did not like the french onion soup. But over all we were well fed and happy. Highly recommend.
Great classy restaurant. Greeted by an amazing host, and the atmosphere was so beautiful. I loved hearing the jazz music while eating, and the food is to DIE for. Absolutely an amazing experience that me and my boyfriend will not forget.
Historic spot in Palm Springs. Classic and very good food.
We have been to Sunday Brunch here many times in the past with little fanfare. We decided to give it another shot. Food was excellent and overall atmosphere was good. We were happy to see the bottomless Champagne return, but after careful reading of the 'fine print' realized they want $39 per person JUST for the champagne! If this included the meal, I would understand, but it makes much more sense to purchase a bottle. Very misleading. One member of our party does not eat egg dishes, which comprise a fair amount of the brunch offerings...limited menu. For some reason, we always get the same old tired slow waiter. While his witty banter is charming, I think it's time to retire. Overall, we don't plan to return anytime soon. There are so many better choices in the area.
This is not the Melvyn's that people knew. It was taken over 2 years ago by corporate people who cheapened the menu along with its quality and steak size, overcharge for drinks, gotten rid of most of the old guard that made the restaurant famous, never pick the phone up when you call, and don't communicate to the staff when a special event was posted for the dinner.
It was my wife's birthday, and was communicated on the reservation and reinforced by me with the front greeter. They blew this completely and never mentioned it or did a thing for her.
This restaurant was made famous by the Coachella Valley regulars with special dishes were made tableside and the bar area was lively to relax and dance after your meal.
On a Saturday night the place used to be 3 deep at the bar and had a loaded dance floor.
This time, the bar was almost empty at prime time and people were walking out.
Obviously, the corporate people did not learn from the mistakes made for places like the Outback who changed their formula for making great prime rib and were eaten alive by the Texas Roadhouse who consumed their business.
I'm all for change, but don't change what made a restaurant great without understanding how it got there.
Stay away.....what a disaster!
The service was amazing, the waiter was friendly and attentive, the food was amazing. We both ended up ordering the lobster risotto and it was delicious!
Beautiful location, fabulous/attentive service, and wonderful food. We went for Saturday brunch and were treated as if we were the only patrons in the restaurant! Our server came by often and had jokes, sightseeing advice, and was a joy to talk to. The food was delicious. And, they do bottomless mimosas for brunch!
The food was mediocre and service staff was not really concerned with customer satisfaction. Plenty of other places to choose from
I think $9.00 is really a high price for bread and butter. It should be no cost.
First time at Melvyn’s and it was everything I imagined and then some!! Thank you so much for making my birthday magical.
Best meal we had at Melvyn's over 30 years. Every dish was GREAT!
OH MY! MELVINS IS NOW A FAR CRY FROM IT'S TRADITIONAL ROMANTIC, SPECIAL OCCASION, PLATE PRESENTATION, HIGHER-END RESTAURANT, VERY BUSY, LOUD, HURRIED SERVICE, SERVERS ALL NEW AND PATRONS DRESSED A FAR CRY FROM THE STATED DRESS CODE ON MELVYN'S WEBSITE. VALET HELP WAS NOT CURTEOUS. WHEN LEAVING HE BROUGHT THE CAR, JUMPED OUT TO GET HIS NEXT TICKET, NO DOORS OPENDED AND WORSE YET, HAD ALTERED RADIO STATIONS...MUST HAVE BEEN SITTING IN A RUNNING CAR AND LISTENING TO SPORTS TALK RADIO. WHAT A SHAME FROM ITS ROOTS!
First restaurant I've ever been to in the USA that charged for bread and butter. $9 to boot.
I'm a retired airline captain that's been in all 50 States and thousands of cities in my 42 year career.
I will not return to any restaurant that's this arrogant.
$9 bread with butter.
The waiter Ben was gave excellent service.
We went to Melvyn’s for our 27th wedding anniversary and were excited to try one of Palm Springs’ marquee dining experiences. While there were some notable highlights, overall the service and food were not commensurate with the reputation and certainly not worth the premium cost.
Cocktails: my Gibson was fine but my wife’s sidecar was so overfilled that it spilled. The waiter apologized for it being over-full, but did not provide an extra napkin or address it beyond apologizing. Because sidecars have a sugar coated rim the overflow made the cocktail glass sticky and unpleasant to hold. Not a premium experience.
For appetizers we had French Onion Soup and a “dozen” oysters on the half shell. The soup was unexceptional, and the oysters were tasty and fresh, but there were only 11! I didn’t notice that I was missing an oyster until I was done so I didn’t mention it (what would have been the redress? I didn’t want them to being me an extra oyster and I’m not going to insist on a $3 discount).
The lobster risotto was exceptional and the best part of the dinner. The steak Diane lacked flavor, although the collection of mushrooms that accompanied it were nice.
After the entrees we debated whether to have coffee and dessert. One of the wait staff (not our primary waiter) had mentioned that they did not have decaf—only regular. The waiter assured us, however, that they did have decaffeinated coffee so we ordered some and a creme brûlée. My wife’s coffee was again filled to overflowing so that it sat in a puddle in the saucer. The brûlée was lovely.
The staff was very pleasant. The ambiance is nice, and there is a convivial spirit among the patrons.
Melvyn’s isn’t bad, but it’s sloppy and NOT worth the premium prices. If you’re going to pay over $300 for a dinner for two (after tip), you don’t expect bush league presentation and a lack of care.
There are other options in the PS area. I encourage you to consider them before Melvyn’s for a fancy dinner.
We had a great get together with a friend who had not eaten out in 15 months. Everything was fantastic and our server, Ben, was top notch. The sea bass daily special was memorable, as was the duck and the Arctic char.
We do love their Sunday brunch at Melvyn's. I miss their Sunday brunch that included champagne. It is a bit expensive now, but still worth it.
I thought you had a dress code. Been coming for 20 years from the San Franisco area. I saw so many people not dressed the way you said we had to. Men with just tshirts, sneakers, pocket shorts. We asked and waiter said, they should be. Please don't stop caring about the dress code.
A favorite place of ours. Food was excellent. Outstanding service rarely found elsewhere. Can’t wait to return next year.
We visit annually and Melvin's is always on our list to dine at. Did not disappoint! Our waiter Jose was excellent! Lobster risotto was excellent as well as the chicken pot pie and the banana foster. We will see them next time. Very special place ❤️
We were there celebrating Father’s Day and had an amazing time. Our server Jose was exceptional and so was the food! We will definitely go back soon.
Returned here after several year gap, and it’s still a quality foodie destination. Cool bar area with live music, main dinning room very dark with retro art on the walls. Wedge salad had dressing that was not traditional blue cheese but was very good, octopus is an entree and was amazing and duck with unique cauliflower purée was also a winner. Regular markup on wines. Service had a few minor snags but overall very enjoyable night, will rebook for sure.
What’s not to love about Melvyn’s! Great bar for pre-dinner drinks and always great food.
