Melvyn’s is the classic Palm Springs restaurant. The service, food, and atmosphere are spectacular. After our meal we sat in the bar and enjoyed listening to Michael at the piano. We had a magical evening. Melvyn’s is always on our agenda when visiting Palm Springs.

Table was ready but had to wait. Smell of sewage when entering. Out of bread and butter. Wasn’t told Wellington would take 40+ min when ordering. Asked the server if the broccolini was plain and he said with cracked pepper. It has a strong pickled bell peppers. Coffee and port didn’t not come out at the same time after the meal.

I usually love going to Melvyn's and have being doing so for more than a decade. Unfortunately, our experience this time was not up to the (former?) standards of the restaurant. Among the four of us, two meals were poor. The eggs Benedict were over cooked and both the eggs and the sauce were at best luke warm on arrival, and the chicken pot pie was horribly undercooked, with the top "crust" as pale and limp as a piece of white bread. Our server was delightful, but her bar service was poor. It's easy for the restaurant to offer bottomless bubbles when glasses are left empty for most of the meal. When brunch for 4 runs $400, with our usual generous tip, one expects and, I believe, deserves better.

We haven’t been to Melvyn's for 5 years so wanted to check out the restaurant’s “new” décor and food. First, our server Brandon C was excellent. He was very attentive and cordial. I had the Steak Diane that was excellent and enjoyed watching Brandon add the finishing touches at our table. My spouse had the Risotto with Scallops and he too enjoyed his dinner. My rating on this restaurant is not due to the quality of the food but the following: (1) The restaurant charges a 4% "wellness surcharge". I don’t recall seeing anywhere on the menu or elsewhere prior to getting our bill that there would this charge. In California, restaurants are allowed to charge a surcharge to offset their operational costs, but the surcharge must be clearly disclosed to customers in advance either on the menu or other means. Since this restaurant was acquired by a large corporation (PlumpJack Group along with Meriwether Companies), this corporation should be financially responsible to pay their employees’ health insurance or pay a fair wage rather than having the public subsidize this expense. Moreover, with the overpriced entrees (a la carte with no extras Steak Diane was $65 and the Risotto/with Scallops was $64), the profit margin should be sufficient for the owners to pay for their employees’ health insurance like most other private businesses. (2) I’m annoyed that the valet parking is $10 and bread is $10 – I don’t like when businesses nickel-and-dine customers to demand every last dollar. I prefer restaurants that do not mandate a set price for parking my car. Regarding the bread, I paid $20 for Wedge salad, which was excellent, but to pay another $10 for bread is ridiculous. (3) We were underwhelmed by the restaurant’s décor. I had heard the location had a complete renovation. I was expecting more. And when asked for the location of the restroom, I was advised that I had to exit the restaurant, go past the valet stand, to the far corner of the property to use one bathroom .

Dinner reservation for 2 at 7:15pm on Sunday evening - entered and was immediately blasted with music coming from the bar. The Maitre d’hotel attempts to seat us in the first table at the entrance near the blaring music. We asked for another table and despite many available tables in the more formal dining section, he sat us in the casual, enclosed patio area. Considering we were guests at their hotel and advised a special occasion, we should have been seated in the main dining room. Our waiter, Jose was attentive. We ordered our meal - the escargot was oddly prepared, immersed in some flavorless, watery liquid served with burned toast. The waiter was also perplexed by the preparation and offered to have something other prepared which we declined. We had ordered bread which was delivered late but thankfully arrived because we were hungry. The main shrimp scampi tasted fine and after waiting a while, bananas foster was delivered table side. The bill arrived with an extra 4% charge for the healthcare of workers. All I can say is that the whole experience felt uncomfortable.

Recent first timers and it just happened to be on their jazz Sundays which was an added bonus. From valet, the host and our server, our experience brought us happiness and contributed to the perfect evening. A real throwback to another time with an attractive and enthusiastic crowd ideal for people watching. The Steak Diane is a must! We look forward to our next adventure at Melvyn's.

Melvyn’s falls short of expectations and competition. Indeed menu is classic, but food quality and presentation average and service by two older gentlemen abysmal. Appears Melvyn’s is attempting to rest on one’s laurels, accepting of mediocrity. One service bright spot, the maitre’d, Sam, was delightful, the consummate professional. Unfortunately, not reflective of our front of house dining room team.

Very disappointed about this restaurant which use to be one of my favorite, not anymore. The waiter never told the price of the special and when the bill arrived was $ 70.00 for the fish special, per person which was unbelievable and in top of everything else $ 10.00 valet . Never come back here and I will tell all my friends if you want a great meal and good price go to Spencer in Palm Springs which is one of the best. Do not waste your money on Melvins Restaurant.

Our waiter Jose was very gracious and attentive. His support staff provided great service as well. The patio is well appointed and the aircon worked well to keep the temperature at a comfortable range. The food and drinks were reasonably priced and the quality was very good. We had been there before and found the food, service and atmosphere consistently satisfying. The lounge and restaurant allowed our small dog to join us. That was very much appreciated.

Love the ambience of old school Palm Springs and Melvyn’s brings just that. We knew ahead of time the prices were $$$$$ but also see they add an additional 4% surcharge before the tax and tip. The prawns were great, as was the risotto. My guests said the fish was good too although the portion appeared to be a half portion. Sadly the chicken was too dry to eat, so it was left in the plate. Our waiter never asked if there was a problem with the chicken. Overall we had a good time and mostly happy with the food but perhaps our waiter was not well trained. We had to request additional utensils, and as we went to pay, one guest wanted to pay for most of the bill (by dollar amount not percentage) and other guests would pay the balance. Our waiter said this was just too much trouble for him and then proceeded to argue with us and tell us what we should have done. Sadly he helped end the evening on a sour note.

First of all our waiter, Attila, (a.k.a., Brandon) had a vast knowledge of the menu, ingredients and preparation. The level of service he gave us still resonates several days later. There were five of us and all of our meals were pure perfection. From the pickled deviled eggs to fillet mignon, our entrées, were not only presented beautifully, but tasted phenomenal! The ambience of the restaurant is reminiscent of earlier elegance. I highly recommend this restaurant. Don’t forget to request Attila!

PS can be pretty daunting when it comes to food. Lot's of tourist traps and dive bars with no soul. Melvyn's brings you back in time when going out for lunch or a brunch was a special occasion that you want to share with friends. Old Hollywood decor and perfect service make the overall experience even better. Listen to the old PS couples a little drunk on bottomless mimosas to get a glimpse of what living in PS all year long means. Will do it again and again

Our burgers were not nearly as good as they were last year when we were there, and the price went up by $6. But the WORST was the drinks: A Cadillac Margarita that was so bad my daughter could not drink it & I had a Bloody Mary that was overloaded with Tabasco or some other terribly spicy sauce.
