Although we’ve been coming to Palm Springs for many years, this was our first visit to Melvins but it certainly won’t be the last.
There is a warmth to this historic restaurant and an elegance to the way the meals are served.
Absolutely charming! Will visit again.
I would say they have the best eggs Benedict in the country, but I want to keep it a secret!
An adult restaurant with professional waiters. The food was excellent.
A fun old-school atmosphere here. Lots of table side food preparation, terrific cocktails and wine list. I had the halibut (market special) and it was wonderful, with a generous portion.
We live in the southeast and get to Palm Springs at least once a year. Melvyn's has always been on our list for a special night out. Normally it is very good. The history and atmosphere are special. The staff are friendly and the food is normally very good. However, last night was not enjoyable; mostly not the fault of the restaurant. The food was not as good as usual and not worth the $200 plus tab (2 people). My steak was overcooked and the vegetables were under cooked (almost raw). The salad wedge and potatoes were good. There was a table of 6 people seated next to us that made the evening unpleasant, to the point I could not wait to leave. Have you ever been around a group that thought they are the most important, smartest, most traveled, most talented, etc. and talked so loud that clearly they believed everyone within miles of them needed to know about it?
Our group of 7 was seated at a wonderful round table. Service was prompt but not hurried. Our food was excellent.
Love sitting at the bar! But eating there is awesome too!!
Sadly, this is my third attempt and having a nice lunch there. It’s such a classic Palm Springs spot, but the service and the food are subpar. They understaff and apologize for taking so long. I feel badly for the front of house staff. The place needs new management and new life breathed into it.
They used to be a Fine Dining destination. On this visit the place was operating at high capacity, the greeter was polite but impersonal, the waiter was unprofessional, and the bench seating offered was quite uncomfortable. Our dinners were good but not outstanding. They seem to be living off their past reputation. It was very nice when we were there many years ago.
Great charm to this restaurant and hotel. The service was very warm and friendly, from the beginning. We enjoyed the lunch and will visit the next time we’re in the area!
Splendid lunch, and the distinguished maitre’d even remembered it was my first visit back in 30 years.
We have been to Melvins many times. This time we had to sit on Patio because my husband had part of left leg amputated. It was still very nice, but the main dining is still the best. We were sad to hear the restaurant changed hands as Melvyn has passed away. It was missing the Old guy waiters in the tuxedo's. Our waiter was personable and didwell in making my Steak Diane. Only black mark, We ordered 3 Melvyn's dry Grey Goose martinis with blue cheese olives. They came and clearly were not Grey goose. that is our go to cocktail, We know what Grey Goose taste like, it it definitely was not. We of course sent it back, and when the new drink came, it was definitely Grey Goose. Was tje bartender thinking we just wouldn't notice. That was disappointing. But that aside, it was still very good.
Service was fair. We waited twenty mins just to get menus. Clearly understaffed.
Lovely evening sitting on the veranda, overlooking the charming fountain, and with the fine service of Peter. Perfect place for people watching too.
Server Richard was fantastic!! The Maitre also!! We loved the old school atmosphere. Been going to Melvyn’s for years and will continue to whenever we are in Palm Springs!
Unfortunately, our evening was marred by poor service and lackluster dishes. We have had one other experience here before which was good but this last visit made it clear that the new owners care nothing about customers being under-served. Rather than telling us they were out of a particular drink or dish they should suggest or ask if there's another preference. Dishes were served cold and under cooked. There was an apology from the waiter but it felt robotic and insincere. There was no offer to make the experience better by comping a drink or a dessert as is commonly done with most restaurants that call themselves top notch. Melvyn's might have been a top notch place years ago but it definitely isn't anymore.
Service and staff fantastic.
Food okay to mediocre.
Starter frissee salad was not good, cold poached egg, burnt croutons, advertised as warm dressing but came cold.
Onion soup was good.
Shrimp pasta was good, baked potato ($11) was small, cold and hard.
Cocktails were very good.
Table side baked Alaska was good.
I'm to give a bad review because the staff were very friendly, the ambience is great and the restaurant is lovely but the food was really disappointing and just doesn't live up to the venue.
We ate at Melvyn's for Valentine's Day dinner. While we were aware that Melvyn's was offering a chef's menu, we were not made aware that this would be the only menu for the evening and we were unable to order off the regular menu. That being said, the food was good, but my husband and I were surprised that a bread basket was not offered at the beginning of our dining experience. I understand that many people may avoid carbs, but a fine dining establishment such as this should always at least offer bread. As for the salad with blue cheese dressing, there was actually no blue cheese dressing on it--only blue cheese chunks. Also, when we both ordered the steak, no vegetables nor a starch was provided--nor did we see it as an optional selection. Again, Melvyn's being the fine dining establishment it projects was rather underwhelming.
The Valentine brunch was very limited. What they had was very nice. We had made reservations for outdoors based on an ad picture. We were not outdoors and the view outside the window did not look remotely like the ad picture. Dessert took a VERY long time. We almost had to give up and leave.
The musician was EXCELLENT!
It's as beautiful atmosphere, perfect entertainment and a delicious meal...although I feel the Cobb salad that was offered should've been a much more upscale salad offering for the price. Our particular server wasn't great at all....always seemed lost and unaware....never asked if we wanted another drink, we had to search him out and was simply rude.
If service was better it would be been a 5 star rating all around.
Dinner for a birthday celebration could not have been more special! Our server, Peter was excellent. The dinner superb, and definitely order the soufflé. Delicious and chocolatey.
5-star all way around!
Absolutely amazing place. We will definitely be back
We went for my wife's birthday lunch. She was set on crab louie having picked it from the online menu. We were told crab louie was no longer offered at lunch and that the online menu was out of date!@?
as usual, matt greeted us as old friends, making us feel special once again, and it was a very genuine greeting. richard, our server, was both attentive and responsive, as well as thoughtful and droll. we love having richard as our server. the atmosphere was classic; the music divine. we had oysters rockefeller, escargots, caesar salad, chicken pot pie, shrimp scampi, scottish salmon, and beef wellington, with melvyn's custom cheesecake and a special birthday panna cotta. topped with coffee...scrumptious. see you next time!
Melvyn's just keeps getting better. Some recent updates are barely noticeable, but they surely are improvements on what was already a gem. Surely, some of the most experienced and gracious wait staff in the Coachella Valley! Melvyn's is a magnet for those who are looking for nostalgia, great food, and memorable service. We prefer the "inside" dining room.
As always we were well taken care of. This time by Richard. Unfortunately we are in Palm Springs only once a year for the month of February; but, always enjoy our anniversary dinner at Melvyn's
It was wonderful! They treated us like royalty!
The service was fantastic. Luckily my wife ordered the fish special when we got there and 6:00 pm and by 6:15 they were out of it, not very good. My prime rib was very tough. Requested carrots instead of asparagus and the meal came with the asparagus. I had to ask our waiter for my carrots. We ordered the creme brûlée and the check was brought but no creme brûlée. Then we received two orders of it.
Good experience. Great place for Sunday brunch.
Spent some time in the piano bar before dinner. Service there was ah none. Had to go to the bar but no big deal. Music and dancing to oldies if that’s your thing. Husband’s steak was great. Scampi was so-so. Good service. We parked ourselves in the driveway and the valet guys came rushing over when we left and told us we had sneaked in and owed them five dollars. Okay sure.
It was a bit noisy but just because they had a wedding celebration. Food was great and service was amazing. Definitely going back
I’ve eaten here many times before under the old ownership. Unfortunately it is changed not for the better. My friend had ordered a chicken pot pie, that after 40 minutes we were told had not been put in the oven. When we finally got our food about 15 minutes later, my Montecristo sandwich had obviously been reheated and was swimming in a dish full of Oil from the melted and reheated cheese. Very poor experience.
After many years saying “we should try Melvyn’s” this year for my 75th birthday dinner, we did. It was exactly as advertised and frankly the diners looked like they were from central casting, although they were tourists. The whole evening was like a good movie from 1947.
Limited lunch menu items
Well from the start, things weren't good. I was dinning alone. The wait staff went three times to the couple at the next table prior to getting me water or a menu over ten minute wait. I requested a green Caesar Salad as opposed to the white stem. It came almost totally white! The food was cooked pretty well but no sauce for the roasted chicken. Value was good except for $5.25 for coffee.
We had a wonderful time and delicious meal. The only negative was an obnoxiously loud and boring patron. Not the responsibility of the restaurant. We will be back!
We love Melvyn’s.. We love the the lounge.. Dining room is classic... ambiance wonderful.. BUT.. The restaurant is way overpriced! An average veal chop with NO sides .. is $42 dollars . We come from NY/ NJ so we have exposure to places with the same price point and Melvyn’s menu prices and food quality do not match.
