Enjoy Southern comfort food with a twist in a relaxing, casual setting at Melba's. Owner Melba Wilson opened its doors for locals and travelers alike to have a pleasant dining experience with great service. Fried catfish strips, barbecue short rib sliders and spring rolls filled with black-eyed peas and collard greens make delicious appetizers before feasting on the main course. Guests can choose from entrées like Melba's popular Southern fried chicken with eggnog waffles, which was a winner on Throwdown! with Bobby Flay, as well as pan-seared sea bass and the barbecue turkey meatloaf. This restaurant also serves hamburgers, lighter fare and sides such as candied yams.
Melba's offers Saturday and Sunday brunch and caters business luncheons, receptions and more. Reservations are welcome, and takeout is available for guests.
My friends & I truly enjoyed ourselves. Wonderful experience.
Me and my hubby went here to celebrate his 50th birthday at the recommendation of a family member and they did not disappoint! It had a warm family-style feel that we appreciated and at the end of our meal during dessert the staff and customers sang Happy Birthday and really surprised both of us. Our experience left us feeling warm, welcomed and wanted. We will definitely return to try different menu options!! Excellent..
The food here is always great, but really, the restaurant should serve cornbread. Can't be southern without cornbread
This is not my first time at this restaurant usually the food is awsome but this last visit left me unsatisfied. My meal was not as tasty as I am use to I could tell I was given the leftovers from the previous night. My food did not taste fresh being that I'm a cook and a foodie I could taste the difference from before and now.
We had 7:00pm reservations on a Saturday night and although it was a super busy night with lots of big parties we were greeted right away in a very friendly manner. We had a short wait for our table at the bar just long enough to order a drink. We told our waitress that we were on a time schedule. She was real attentive and accommodating making sure the kitchen and manager was aware of our time frame. We received our dinner on time and everything was delicious! Our only regret is we didn't have time to have dessert.
I liked the overall cozy feel of the restaurant. It's small and comfortable. The service was very good and our server Brian was patient and had good knowledge of the food menu and the drinks. The food was delicious and the drinks were well made. I will definitely go back. I do recommend making a reservation rather than walking in.
Wonderful food, setting, and service! We can't wait to visit Melba's again. The collard greens are superb!
The food was great! The service was good. The owners very friendly and professional.
Short ribs were over-cooked. Table next to ours experienced same. Waitress was not inconsistently watchful of her tables.
Customer service was good. Food was good, it was slow coming but good.
I love the food and always a great place to socialize and the drinks are on point all the time. The bartender Rich always knows how to make a great drink. My friend came from California and she loved the oxtails. And I had the grilled shrimp excellent.
I arrived for my reservation five minutes early, when I opened the door I was told to come back shortly they don’t open until 10. When I arrived exactly at 10 other people were seated so I don’t understand what happened here? The eggnog waffle lives up to the hype however I think the waffle maker or may not have been totally clean because there was residue and other flavors at a few spots on the waffle. It appears they had a big catering job. The service was good and prompt.
My Girlfriends and I had a Great Time. The Brunch was Amazing! The Music was Excellent! I will definitely be returning.
This place is great! The food was delicious and the service was really good. I'll definitely be back!
This was my first time dining at Melba’s. My expectations were met based on the recommendations I received. The food and drinks was great!!!!!
I will definitely come again
The food and service was great on Monday
The other room had a huge party which is fine but it caught me off guard.. there weren’t many people there but next door was a birthday party.
First I was reprimanded for being late, when I had previously emailed in a reservation change request and the reservation was supposedly changed. Then the food took two hours to arrive because the kitched made a mistake and said that our order was completed but it never was. The waitress never checked on us, we had to hunt the same manager that reprimanded me down. He ended up bring the food to us personally and comping the food but nonetheless my birthday celebration was ruined.
Overall an enjoyable time in historic Harlem
and I’m proud to be apart of the cultural experience which is Melba’s
The food was amazing, once it arrived. We appeared to be there during a rush. The food took what felt like a long time to arrive. We did not have appetizers so we were just getting restless when it came out to our table. Go hungry but don’t go “starving” or you may be a bit hangry by the time you get your meal.
The appetizers were fantastic and my friend's bass was wonderful but I got the signature dish, the fried chicken on the waffle and the chicken was really dry and stringy. I was sure I had gotten day old (or more chicken). This was very disappointing.
Very lively and wonderful atmosphere to celebrate my best friends birthday. THANK YOU
Great soulful restaurant! Exactly as advertised on website
Best southern cooking in NYC. Excellent friendly service. Fun atmosphere. A must try
And extra special that Melba greeted us ever so warmly!
Twas pretty good. Portion sizes are small for the prices. It was freezing inside the whole time. I believe one of the heaters was out. Great ambience tho! Great date spot! Would go again!
Deliciously authentic soul food and terrific ambiance. Melba’s treated us right. We will be back soon!
Loved it. We will visit this establishment frequently.
Great food and great vibrations! Would definitely go back!
The vibe is warm, like a spot to which longtime friends keep returning. The food is very well-prepared. The waiters pay attention without hovering. Unpretentious, real place. Try your luck, but a reservation may make more sense.
Some of the best soul food I've had in New York so far. I came on Valentine's Day, which is also my boyfriends birthday, and they allowed us to choose a slice of cake & had the entire restaurant sing for him. Really enjoyed it & I will definitely be back!
Amazing food, nice ambience, great service. I will again.
The food was delicious, per usual. The service wasn’t great but it didn’t overshadow my experience. My server expressed the issue with the timeliness of receiving our order without me asking. Management offered two items on the house.
The food was great!! Price was what I expected for NY but they crammed us into a table in the corner that was hard to get in and out of. They definitely tried to make the most out of their space but it was uncomfortable.
Food was absolutely delicious!! Staff was courteous and attentive. Can't wait to go back!!
The food was good. I usually order the same thing but this time tried the wings and waffle and the appetizer rolls. All was well. My guests had the beef ribs and the empanadas. They enjoyed their meals as well. I was thrown off by them being short on menus for us (party of 3) but the service and attention made up for it.
Love this place
I was a bit disappointed with my meal....the food was so good on my previous visits....the turkey sausage was overcooked and dry, and my waffle was a bit tough to cut...the service, however, was fabulous as usual.
Awesome staff! The went out of the way to assist us, show kindness, patience, and professionalism. My wife and I always bring friends to Melba’s and everyone loves it. Keep up the good service and the food remains better than the rest.
It is not often that a restaurant owner make themselves available to its patrons- but Melba herself has been there, and stays amongst the people - making herself available to talk and mingle. True Harlem love!
It was my birthday. I told my husband that I want to do something other than our traditional steak dinner - I wanted “soul food”. We always head from DC to NYC for my birthday. I’d been seeing a good friend of mine post on social media about Melba’s. I did a search for soul food and looked at the reviews. Then I searched to see how far we were staying.
We were greeted at the door by a nice guy who welcomed us. After being seated another nice young lady came by and told us about the menu.
I had the beef ribs, macaroni and cheese & greens. My husband had salmon, potato salad & macaroni and cheese.
The food was good. Dessert (pound cake) was excellent. They sang happy birthday to me. I’d definitely go back again.
