I hadn't been to Mela in years, and I was pleased that it was as good as I remembered. I highly recommend it.
Overwhelming smell of Lysol/ cleaning supplies during entire visit. Terrible service. We felt invisible. We were never checked on during the meal after food was dropped in table. No background music—just noise from kitchen and staff speaking loudly back and forth. All staff in other room eating dinner together while we were completely ignored. Very clean bathroom. Mediocre food/ small portions. Overall, VERY disappointing.
Great pre-theater location. Very friendly staff, excellent spices. You smell the wonderful flavors as soon as you open the door to the restaurant.
Food is ok, service is not very good. Mostly because servers are not well-trained.
Always a favorite of ours. Not too busy on a snowy Saturday night. The combination meals for two are a excellent value.
Good food. Pleasant and friendly waitstaff. Would recommend scrapping the tablet for taking orders -- a pen and a pad would have been more efficient.
Our party of four enjoyed the food and the ambience. Will look forward to eating here again.
Have now eaten at Mela several times. Food and service are consistently excellent. Have had a variety of dishes and never been disappointed. Restaurant is small and tables close together so perhaps not the best spot for intimate dinner but highly recommend overall
They did not honor our OpenTable reservation on a holiday. What's the point of being open? Rude on Christmas Eve with plenty of room in the place?
Mela offers the most romantic/put-together ambiance of any Indian restaurant I've been to in the Boston area over the years. I highly recommend the lunch buffet for variety and value. The chicken dishes are perfectly tender, although later at lunch time, the meat items get diluted with less meat and more sauce. Service was on top of removing plates and managing drinks, unlike some Indian buffets in the area.
Food was mediocre. Server was rude, unhelpful with questions about the menu, and refused to clean the table! We'll never return!
Excellent service and food. The mango mimosa was phenomenal. New favorite Indian Restaurant in Boston.
Excellent food and solid service. Second visit. Consistent thus far.
Vegetarian appetizer was okay. Chicken Vindaloo was awesome! Clove, cardamom, hot peppers, and layers of flavor to mull over while you let the sweat on your eyelids evaporate.
Excellent food and attentive service. A great spot before theater.
Pleasant all-round. The menu is fairly standard Indian, with a few things you might not find elsewhere.
Great service and food!! Highly recommend this place
This was a very nice, elegant Indian restaurant. The service Was on point and the food was served very very quickly to my surprise. I highly recommend this restaurant for the authentic Indian experience
Food was fantastic but restaurant was hot and service was terrible. Our waiter barely spoke English and we had trouble communicating. The bartender had to come help him several times. Wine was served warm, and it was a $58 bottle of Sancerre. When we finished and the plates were cleared they came by and put down the check without even asking if we wanted anything else.
The ambience was lacking as well. The host stand by the entrance had a coat rack right behind it with a lot of the employees personal clothes hanging on it. It looked tacky.
I would recommend this place for takeout only. The food is really quite good, but the dining in experience is not.
This restaurant has gone downhill. The wait staff constantly turns over. The wine prices have soared. The ambiance was nonexistent on my last visit, with the lights turned brightly on.
We enjoy Mela’s traditional Indian cuisine; the best in my view!
Was sitting next to a large group that was very noisy. Manager moved us to another seat that was very quiet from then on.
Very nice server
If I lived in Boston this would be my go to restaurant
Best Indian restaurant in Boston. Unpretentious. Good food with excellent variety. Service is attentive. Noise level is good even when the restaurant is full.
Celebrated my birthday. Love food in Maiella, service also great!
The curry goat was excellent. We also loved the spicy naan. We’re Indian and it hit the spot. In the past I’ve had their lamb chops which were excellent too. Overall it’s our go to place.
Service was wonderful. Food was great! My wife and I will definitely return when we are back in the area. Very generous portions.
Wonderful food, great service. Unfortunately it wasn't very clean.
This is a go-to restaurant for us after theater. We always enjoy the food, the service is awesome, and the value is the best in the South End. I'd suggest the full meals for two, with choice of entrees with appetizers and dessert. They offer both a vegetarian and non-vegetarian option.
If you're craving an authentic Indian biryani or rogan josh, don't go here. The staff were friendly (although our server didn't ask if we wanted naan or drinks with the meal) and the venue had a nice ambience, the main courses did not satisfy any craving for "authentic indian food".
The starter meat platter, good (especially the samosa). But honestly, our hearts sunk to the floor when the generous portion of "meat biryani" came to our table looking more like vegetable fried rice (the one with frozen veggies and red onions(?!!)) with added meat than the aromatic, colourful and fragrant biryani the menu promised. Same with the Rogan Josh, although filling, it looked more like a curry from my wife's early days of cooking where it was too watery to be called a Rogan Josh (that is supposed to be think and spice infused) and the added yogurt was not added at the right time, for enough time, proof being the little dots of curdled yogurt (she wrote most, if not all of this review).
Although the food made for good leftovers the next day (once we accepted biryani was not served), we will not be returning. The hunt for real Indian/Pakistani food with a side of worth-it heartburn continues...
I still do like Mela a lot, but service was not nearly as attentive as I'd expect on this visit.
The food was very good, but it took almost 45 minutes to get to the table after we ordered. Our waitress was very nice, and apologetic about the wait, but we had to really rush to eat and get to our show on time. Definitely not worth the price we paid for the meal.
This is a 'go-to' restaurant for me and my colleagues when we're in Boston!
Good Indian food in the middle of Boston. We started with the Gillafi Kebabs - awesome and succulent. This was followed by a shrimp curry and a lamb biriyani. The shrimp curry was excellent - well balanced gravy and large prawns. The biriyani was reasonable. The coconut sorbet is highly recommended.
I was looking for a restaurant close to SpeakEasy where the ambient noise allowed an intimate conversation and found this delightful restaurant, food delicious and service attentive. I will return.
Seemed a bit dingy and curry quality varied from batch to batch, but most dishes seemed on point!
Their meal for two people (comes either with or without meat) will leave both people stuffed.
This was an awesome experience celebrating a birthday for our co-worker
The food at Mela is consistently excellent and the service great. Staff seem to be truly happy in their jobs and that comes across the way they try to serve. Best Indian Restaurant in Boston!!
