Megu Ratings and Reviews
What a place! To start, ambiance is superb from the second you walk in! Gorgeous stairway followed by a sexy room.. We were greeted by Dante, made you feel immediately comfortable!! Brought us to the bar while we waited for our table.. the appetizers were my favorite part (tuna tar tar cones and edamame lollipops to be specific) and they have some vegan options as well! George the director took amazing care of us and was extremely hospitable! The staff makes you want to come back and the food and drinks seel the deal. Must try!
Used to love Megu but it has gone downhill. I’ve eaten at this restaurant when it was downtown many years ago. Since the reopen nothing is the same. Horrible service. Food delivery slow. Charged for items we did not order. Brought out drinks & food we didn’t order. Will not be returning.
I've eatin at Akai both locations in New Jersey hundreds of times, I've eatin at Nobu in New York, Miami, and Las Vegas, hundreds of times, those are 1st rate top of the line resteraunts. The food was so bad at Megu I can't even believe it still. Ordered 5 dishes, 4 were Not editable , and the lollipop edamame tasted like dry falafel balls at a middle eastern fast food deli. Horrible experience is too kind a review. They should return the cook to the insane asylum and hire an actual chef.
This place is a trip. We walked down the mysterious stairway for a late dinner reservation, and walked into a club scene. The host did not have our table ready and instructed us to wait at a very overpacked bar. After 20 minutes of awkward standing around, I inquired about our table. The host then led us to a tiny super neon lit pink room right off of the larger bar area.
The menu looked interesting, and prices were extremely high for the atmosphere. I hoped the food would make up for that. The food was ok but not worth the charge, and coupled with the garish atmosphere, we were disappointed.
The DJ music (middle eastern in a Japanese fusion restaurant) became even louder, and it was hard to communicate. At least our surroundings were amusing. Women began dancing at their tables, and couples began dramatically fighting. The contrast of joy and tears was symbolic of the restaurant’s overall aura.
There were a few mishaps with service, like our food possibly being forgotten, and our first server disappearing without a word. There was nothing special done for my birthday. However everyone we encountered was very lovely, especially the food runner. Our first server gave us a round of drinks on the house to make up for the food lapse before he disappeared, and thank god.
I do not know if I’d return for dinner, but possibly I’d come for the after party.
While the food was amazing, the service did not make me want to return. My friend and I were celebrating our birthdays and we’re trying to enjoy a meal while catching up. In between breaks of apps or drinks while talking people kept trying to take our food/drinks when they weren’t even finished! I’m paying 20.00 for a “glass of sake” that was the equivalent of a shot glass maybe a little more (had I known that I never would have ordered it)..don’t touch my glass until every last drop is gone. I clearly had liquid in the glass. Same thing happened with our appetizer. I’m paying for it don’t take it without asking if I’m done. I don’t care if there is only 2 pieces of edamame left...I’m paying for every single one. There wasn’t a line of people waiting to get in, there were plenty of tables open so I don’t know what the rush was and honestly it didn’t seem like the tables on either side of us were being rushed like we were. I was so excited to go here since I am rarely in the city and left very disappointed. It was nice one of the managers spoke to us and offered to make it up next time but I left with a bad taste in my mouth.
Staff was very nice and helpful but sushi/sashimi was not fresh not eve close. I wouldn't go back for that reason alone and its not worth the expensive price tag for fishy smelling fish. There is no "sushi bar" to dine at they told us they use it for food and bar prep ~ its more of a lounge atmosphere ~ fun bar than a place to go for dinner.
reservation was for 10:30. upon arrival we were told it would be 5 minutes. by 11pm we were still waiting to be sat. when we finally did get seated, our service was horrible. our server took forever to greet us but once she did we gave her our food and drink order. we got our appetizers before our drinks. our entrees were messed up. we ordered 5 rolls and got 3. the food was great and the ambiance was too but the service was just not worth it.
The salmon taco was the highlight of our evening. The rest of the food was tasty, but nothing special. We also ordered the cheese dumpings, which was a let-down since it was almost just like one of those Totino's pizza rolls. For our main dishes, we ordered the Salmon sushi (can't remember the name), which was good but lacked a diversity of flavors that I had been expecting. The lamb chops were also good, but needed a sauce to pair. Do not get the lotus chips side - not worth the money. Finally, for dessert, we ordered the melting chocolate brownie which was a fun experience, but we would not likely order again as the overall taste and flavor was mediocre. The service was wonderful and attentive, but the food was perhaps lackluster given the price.
My girlfriend and I have been here twice and we always enjoy ourselves. Food is always spot on and the wine list is nearly endless and is impressive though we always get sake when we come here. Atmosphere is very posh and hip, lots of "beautiful people" are always around because Tao is just next door on the corner and is usually the next stop for most patrons. You may even catch a glimpse of a celebrity or two since this place seems to be a magnet for them. Prices are on the really high side, but worth it as you always get a quality dining experience and so is worth the occasional splurge with someone special.
I have to say my whole family are big foodies, and usually are critical of some part of a meal, but at Megu they said that every dish had s unique taste and was something amazing and special, the Madagascar shrimp grilled where amazing! I agree with my family this is one of the best resturants I have rated at all year, and the last 60 days I have been doing nothing, but traveling for Work in Europe and eating at Michelin Star resturants, and I have to say from Service to taste this place deserves a star rating as well. I advise anyone and everyone to try it!
The Wagiu meet was burned and also the big shrimp was burned. Before I finished my dinner the waiter took my plate away but ... the bill was the most impressive thing of the night. The manager was really nice but the food and the service not as good as I expected . I won’t suggest this place to a friend
Maybe it was an off night, but service was AWFUL. Over 15 minutes to get greeted, and then by a manager, who ultimately took our order. For the price of their food you'd expect a server at some point to acknowledge you. Food was great though, and the host was nice enough to wish my friend a happy birthday.
The wine list was barren and the excuse was "we are switching to the fall list." The only whites where Chardonnay. When asked if they had anything else, the waiter said yes and brought a supposed Sauvignon Blanc that tasted just like a Chardonnay. I think it was a bait and switch. We instead went for cocktails, which were good except one was not what we ordered. Additionally, we ordered some fatty tuna sushi recommended, that ended up costing $130 for six pieces.
This place clearly caters to the out of town crowd with an expense account who is not looking for great food.
I've had better sushi and service at cheap sushi dives.
We had an 8pm reservation, planning a fun date night with my husband. They put is in a section where they were having a 10pm party - NOT my problem, as we made reservations prior. The appetizer comes, tuna tartare which was amazing - before we took our first bite our main entree comes, we send it back and inform the waiter - within 5 min it comes back - then again, we finally just keep it - its a $45 black cod, and for sure, the worse I ever ate – and raw. And we were RUSHED out the door by 9pm - our waiter was super nice, but what bad management and customer service to feel so rushed for the price of the meal while half the restaurant on the other side was EMPTY!
Its a cool atmosphere, would only recommend for a QUCIK bite when in a rush!
I have been wanting to try megu For quite sometime. Menu did not have many selections. way overpriced for the amount and quality of food you get. Service was very good, super attentive- but almost to the point of annoying I wanted to say "ok enough!" But I appreciated the effort. Would definitely not go back. There are a number of other amazing Asian places in that neighborhood.
This experience was simply the WORST I had at a venue of this level in at least 10 years. They were GROSSLY overbooked and we were seated close to 2 hours AFTER a 10:15pm reservation, there were SEVERAL parties that were visibly upset and arguing with staff who despite being deferential and offering free drinks simply could NOT get the job done. Once food came out we were informed that one of the meals we ordered was NOT available!!! This after waiting over 2 hours, my party and I ended up leaving the restaurant at 1am... I was VERY embarrassed as this was my choice and I am the NYC native... Yet Megu charges $18 for cocktails while having one bartender who was overworked!!! Its a beautiful venue, the DJ was great and the Hosts tried to make up for the shortfalls but the execution was SO poor it was impossible to be anything other than furious. They need to rethink what they are doing in there and get it together !
