Meat & Potatoes is a high end gastropub in downtown Pittsburgh. Its kitchen takes as its inspiration the idea of elevating comfort food to a gourmet level. Its chefs are inspired by fresh, seasonal ingredients and its bar staff creates innovative cocktails and serves a range of wines by the glass and draught beers, as well.
The menu at Meat & Potatoes is a new take on basic. There are classic appetizers like fried pickles, grilled bread and fried Brussels sprouts, as well as more innovative fare like fried pigs ear and buttermilk fried chicken liver. Meat & Potatoes mains include pot roast, salmon and lamb neck cassoulet.
Excellent restaurant. Been going to Meat & Potatoes since it opened in 2011 (several times for dinner, dozens of times over the years for lunch) and I can't say I've had a single bad meal. Sadly, they ended their lunch service this year so it'll be Dinner & Sunday Brunch from here on out.
Very unique menu items and starters. The grilled bread with goat butter, devils on horseback, and bone marrow are all must-haves. Often have barreled age cocktails. I'd never had a "Last Word" but it's now one of my go-to cocktails after trying it here. Good selection of beer, absinthe and whisky as well-- M&P was one of the first places in this town where I found Japanese whisky.
Reservations are highly recommended (seen walk-ins told 2h+ wait times on a Friday & Saturday)
Great service and food. I was pleasantly surprised that they took note we were going to see show so that we got our food as soon as possible.
My husband and I had dinner at Meat and Potatoes following a theater show at the nearby Benedum Theater. I ordered the roasted chicken and my husband had the dinner special, skirt steak. While we agreed that both our entrees were delicious, his portions were decidedly smaller than mine. I ended up giving him about 1/3 of my chicken, which was fine, since the chicken was a very large portion. We had talked about getting the "Steak for Two," which was a 30+ oz steak, but decided against that. The couple seated next to us did get it, and the cutting board upon which the meal arrived barely fit on the very small, round table. They said it was very good, and took a good deal of it home with them.
It was strange, at first, being seated inches apart from the tables on either side of us, but we found that it was easy to carry on a conversation without being overwhelmed by the conversations of other diners. They don't have a lot of seating, which explains why numerous patrons were turned away if they didn't have reservations. It is possible to sit at the bar and order from the full menu, but those seats were full while we were there.
We had a gift card, and will return to use the rest of the card. I would definitely recommend making reservations, especially on the weekend. I used the "Open Table" reservation option here on Tripadvisor for our recent reservation. I liked the online reservation method since after trying to call the restaurant several times, I couldn't get anyone to answer the phone! But, do keep trying since the food is delicious and well worth making the effort to get there.
Always an interesting place to eat. The restaurant is not roomy, but you don't feel crowded. Anchored by a large bar, the gastropub always offers interesting fare. Service is typically fair to good. Overall, you have to eat here at least once (or twice). Make reservations well in advance.
Good food..small tables..patient waiter. Excellent Brisket Mac n cheese. Bone marrow toppings important--the 'pickled' things are subtle, even a non-pickle eater liked them!
The Wagyu Flat Iron was the best tasting, tenderest piece of beef I've ever had, and I don't normally get very excited about steak. Worth it!
Still one of my favorite places to eat anywhere! The food is outstanding and always delicious! Everyone should try it at least once!

This was my first visit to Meat and Potatoes. My husband and sons are big meat eaters so this restaurant was their choice. The service was excellent and for the most part, the food delicious. We had the mussels and fried pickles for starters. Both were excellent. My sons shared the dinner for two with a 34 oz. ribeye steak, confit roasted potates and mushrooms. Quite impressive! My husband had the double pork chop that was smoked and brined. Very flavorful and moist. Didn't like the cabbage side though. I opted for the Pasta Bolognese. The pasta was homemade and had good texture served al dente. The sauce had chunks of braised short rib. I could only eat half of it but I enjoyed it very much. Wish there were more vegetable choices/side dishes though. The only disappointing thing were the desserts. We ordered the malted chocolate pot au crème and the butterscotch apple pie. Both were very average. I particularly did not like the apple pie. It was deconstructed and served in a mason jar. I know this is a current trend but not successful. They should hire a pastry chef!

If you love such foods as fried chicken livers with a spicy sauce, marrow on toast points or duck liver pate, you'll appreciate the offerings at Meat & Potatoes. The major drawbacks--the noise level and extremely small tables too close together in the room surrounding the bar can be avoided by requesting a table in the back room.
Food was absolutely amazing. Service was also amazing. It was our first time there and the waitress took the time, although extremely busy, to explain the menu and answer our questions. Only complaint is that the tables are extremely cramped.
The atmosphere was dark and cozy wih comfortable seating and interesting decor.
Rude and no response on our request. They said they need to ask for a permission to change the table and did not mention anything to us about the request after they said they will look at it. Kept us sitting there, no greeting. Reception is rude. It was my girl friend's birthday. I felt so sad, because of the dinner. Definitely not a good recommendation at all.
Good food, great service. I come here a lot as I live downtown and bring friends often. Have ordered the bone marrow and the parpardelle often. All of the food is savory and great for a cold, rainy day. The only issue I've ever had here is the amount of herbs that are added to the dishes--a little too much and its been increasing over time. Otherwise, good place.
Amazing food, decor and uniqueness- just like its 2 siblings Täkō and Butcher and the Rye. Hallelujah! Bringing Pittsburgh foodies joy in every bite! Get the chicken and waffles. It is to die for!!!!!
Great place to visit and eat I highly recommend the steak for two . You will definitely be bringing leftovers home and if you have dogs they will wrap the massive bone to take home to them .... Best of all it's really not all that expensive.
Meat and Potatoes was suggested by various friends that visit Pittsburgh often. We tried to go a few weeks earlier, but was unable to get a reservation. We saw many going in, without reservations, without being turned away, just a long wait.
You can go right to the bar, which is the middle of the dining area. It was crowded, but my wife's whiskey sour (with egg whites), was to het pleasure.
It didn't take long, and we sat. It's a little crowded if people are standing around the bar, and the waitresses are Constantly asking people "excuse me". So as far as relaxing, at least this night, it was not.
Our waitress was on it, and we never went long without her asking if we needed anything, or how everything was.
We ordered a salad, fried pickles, and for the ,meal........the Ribeye for 2!!
We were told it'd take around 45 minutes to cook, which was fine, hoping it was worth the wait.
Did I mention it's a little crowded, and the tables are small?
When our meal showed up, just as the picture show, this Huge chunk of fine cow, lay in front of us. Ordering such a big meal on a small round table (it comes on a big cutting board with marrow, potato wedges, and mushrooms), was a little awkward to eat and share.
As far as the Meat and Potatoes.......Certainly up there for me amongst the best all time, and ranked #1 by my wife.
If you can get Good, I mean Really good food, it usually tops anything else that goes on in a restaurant.
The vibe is cool, maybe just not what we are used to, but sitting close to others while you overfill your table with something everyone else wished they ordered.....
Needless to say, we'll be back for more quality dead cow!
I had been wanting to go to Meat & Potatoes for some time before actually making it there. FINALLY, I went with my guy this past weekend, Sunday night. We arrived early so we sat at the bar for a pre-dinner cocktail. The bartender (so sorry we didn't get his name) was incredible and so were the drinks. I had the Root to Berry. The sprig of rosemary in the glass took this drink over the top. My guy had the Southie and could not have been happier with his choice. Of the two of us, I am definitely the adventurous eater so for apps I ordered the Bone Marrow and Artisanal Cheese Board. My guy, who is usually not so adventurous, ordered the Pig Ears. What?! All of the apps were visually stunning and tasted like heaven on a plate. For dinner, I had the Waygu Flat Iron (med rare) and he had the Black Bass (I know, I gave him a lot of sh*t for ordering fish in a place called Meat & Potatoes). The steak was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. The fish was tasty also although I probably never would have ordered it myself. The portions were perfect and still left enough room in the belly for dessert. I had the White Chocolate Panna Cotta which included stewed blackberries on a thin layer of white chocolate melted on top of the smooth and silky cream all served in a small mason jar. My guy had the Chocolate Pot de Creme which was a rich milk chocolate pudding topped with gorgeous whipped cream and chocolate shavings. The service was excellent and the length of time spent dining was just as expected for this establishment.
If you are looking for a lovely and incredibly flavorful meal, run, don't walk, to Meat & Potatoes. I can't wait to go back!
Incidentally, I also can't wait to get to Tako, which is operated by the same owners of Meat & Potatoes and is located about a block or two from Meat & Potatoes. Tacos are without a doubt my favorite food on the planet AND there's a tequila bar. Done and done.
Awesome first Pittsburg experience from two Toronto food experience lovers. Wish I'd picked the pork chop! I picked the bass. Modest portion in comparison - awesome flavour and taste.
Companion had flank steak - Awesome. Appetizers and deserts - top notch.
It was my second time back and had high expectations. Took 20 min to get water...went for sat brunch. Was part of last seating. Fried chicken was bland and cold . Disappointing. Took forever to get food. Only one of 4 entrees was worth it.
Great food as always, servers though should keep the lunch crowd in mind though that have to return to work.
Food was amazing. Cocktails were amazing. Only issue was we were seated at one of the small round tables around the edge of the restaurant. If there was maybe one less table so they could be a little more spread out, it would have been a far more pleasant experience

Great place to meet before a show for drinks and apps
Dined with a friend who suggested the pate and it was one of the best I've had. We enjoyed it with our wine and savored every bite. I had the pot roast which was another surprise as it was not only delicious but not salty. My friend had the featured chicken which had a carribean flare and said it was very good. We dined on a Monday evening and by 7 the restaurant and the bar were both busy. Service was great and we were not rushed.
The bloody marys were awesome with infused vodka!
I have read many reviews regarding this restaurant's lunch service and thought I would give it a whirl. If you are on any type of time crunch...this is not the place to go. Some co-workers and I made a 12:00PM lunch reservation, prime lunch hour for Downtown Pittsburgh. To my surprise, the restaurant had multiple empty tables....maybe the rain kept people in but either way we figured this shouldn't take TOO long then! Well, we were wrong. Our waiter poured our water and stated then stated he would be back to tell us about the ONE lunch special they had that day...came back another 15 minutes later to give us the special then immediately left again instead of taking our order. Another 10 minutes later he came back. It took us about 30 minutes to actually receive our lunch and the waiter again disappeared. All in all, we were there for well over an hour and a half. The food was absolutely amazing as always, but for a day in which it was not remotely close to busy, the service was lousy. I highly recommend if you are on a time crunch for lunch or heading to a show, you make it known at the beginning!
Charcuterie plate was amazing. Cocktails were great. Cheese plate was lame though. Just three slim slices for north of $10. Not worth it. Bone marrow was good. Everybody by us (except us) got the meat and potatoes for two. That looked amazing. Ribeye and bone and bone marrow and holy moley it was huge.
Great food, but make reservations! The food service was quick and efficient.
We went to Meat & Potatoes to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary and had an absolutely wonderful experience. The staff at the entrance were very welcoming, our server was very attentive and knowledgeable, and the food was outstanding! The beer selection was great and the ambiance was perfect for our romantic evening out.
Food and Service were great. They have a DJ for Sunday Brunch playing very loud club music-ruined the whole experience.
Highly disappointed. I went to meat and potatoes for dinner once and it was delicious... brunch was awful. First of all the music was obnoxiously loud for a Sunday brunch and not my taste at all. I like all different kinds of music from jazz to hip hop to metal but whatever this was, it was brutal. Next we are sat down squeezed between two other tables; they were about a foot away on both sides. Then I ordered a bloody mary which had barely any alcohol in it, especially for the glass size. I know this because it is a bloody mary bar which was quite significant (so i saw exactly how much vodka was in my glass).. i did enjoy the bars selection but after i drank my bloody mary i felt like i consumed zero alcohol which isn't what i am looking for after a bloody mary. Next my fiancé ordered a beer and the server wasn't even sure if they had that beer at the restaurant. Now lets get to the food. Chicken and waffles: oh my horrible. The chicken was completely over breaded and fried to a burnt taste without flavor if that even exists. The chicken clearly wasn't salted or brined or marinated in anything, it was truly awful. Paired with a jalapeño cheddar waffle that was dryer than a desert. So when you combined the two it was just awful. They served it with a bourbon syrup that fill like three of the nooks of the overly dry waffle. It couldn't even help. Short rib hash: Now I will say my eggs were perfectly poached and the sauce was delicious, one of the best sauces I ever had BUT this meal was so tiny and I had 3 bites, I kid you not, 3 bites of short rib for 14 dollars. It was two eggs, about a cup of diced potatoes and three bites of short rib and covered with the sauce. Now the sauce was delicious but it had none of horseradish flavor it claimed to have. This experience was awful it was a waste of a sunday brunch and a waste of money.
Bad service. Prime rib full of fat. Wagyu not cooked to orsee and missing an element listed on the menu. Wrong drink brought by waiter who argued that it was telling correct drink...until the bartender came over and admitted it was wrong. Not worth the almost $200.
It was a nice experience and the food good. But the way they seat I have found very odd. Why do you have to wait 15 minutes when you have a reservation and am on time? Our food came out almost before our drinks-I don't know if our server forgot about our drink order!

Make a reservation or you may be disappointed most nights. Second, bring a good appetite. The food is amazing and the service flawless, unusually fast in my restaurant experience. I had the pot roast with whipped potato and vegetables. A feast. It is good place for solo, couple or group meal. The dress is smart casual.
