McMenamins Elks Temple
Love, love, love the entire McMenamins concept, and just enjoy the atmosphere at them. This one was a very nice venue. It was highly anticipated by our party, and did not disappoint in that respect. Love to stay in a place that has so many adult entertainment options. However the food was spectacularly underwhelming. I can handle bland flavors (pass the pepper flakes please), but cold food? We stayed 2 days with all meals in house (both evenings we had a party of 7+ in the Pub), and there was not one food item that was served hot. Some items were warm, some items were served lukewarm and very quickly became cold (health code violation??). Seriously my eggs and sausage were cold on a slightly warm plate. How does that happen? I understand the logistics are challenging, but we waited 40 minutes for a pizza late one night that our waiter finally went to check on at 35 minutes, and it was served cold. Ok, apologize and have a fresh one made and serve it warm. Really simple. We are not ones to complain to a busy staff, but a suggestion... they need to spend more time on customer service and less on appearing cool to the young crowd and entirely not enough carding going on. We did have a couple awesome outstanding waiters...one awesome young lady in the Pub, and another in the Tiki lounge. We also had some service that skirted being rude. Not openly rude but since we are not in our 20's or cool with plugs or ink well...maybe just ignored enough to make the point. One bartender did not even ask if I wanted change for a $20 when I purchased a $14 drink?? I waited at the bar for 5 minutes being ignored then just walked away. Will I recommend it as a place to stay, drink and party at...heck yeah, but find other restaurants to eat at. There are a ton of high quality restaurants to eat at within a few blocks. Used to live nearby so its a fact.
The food took a really long time to come out. The waiter was not attentive at all. We had to hunt him down to pay our bill. I order a salad it was just a bunch of lettuce with very little toppings.
Wonderful evening and venue to take guests after visiting the LaMay Car Muauem.
We enjoyed a delicious dinner of salmon and then explored the other floors... to capture the chandelier collection as well as the secret bar... Fun evening.
I’m so glad we made reservations because it was packed with an hour and half wait. We were seated right when we arrived at a window seat as requested and our waiter was at our table to greet us within a few seconds. He was great! Our service was excellent, food was great, atmosphere was interesting but fun and our drinks were always full. After dinner was like a maze...walking thru halls, upstairs, downstairs and in hidden rooms. It was as crazy as it was fun.
We had breakfast & it was fantastic. the cheesy jalapeno grits & Cajun tots are a must try!
It was a wonderful weekend. The room was very comfortable and clean. Delicious food and drinks. Enjoyed drinking my morning coffee in front of the chimney at the lobby.
Really fun atmosphere and great service on the 4th floor with Rose as our waitress. 5 bars total in the building and live music made for a super cool experience, will definitely be coming back.
We had a blast on our date night. We started off with really good food, drinks and then wandered the faculty and even found the secret bar. It was a night to remember. Now we want to travel to some of the other McMenamins too! I had the cedar plank salmon and it was really good. My husband had the wings and loved them.
Beautiful building and they seated us where we could look out over the water. I had the queen Isabel pizza which was wonderful except it could have used 2 more minutes in the oven. My husband loved his shrimp and grits and my son thought the fish and chips were satisfactory. I believe the menu is a little difficult for picky eaters but the beer selection was great.
Amazing overall experience! Be sure to explore the first 3 floors too! So many cool hangouts and over the top eclectic detail!
Lunch isn't served until 1PM. Service was very slow and incomplete (no silverware until requested. Food was only OK. Building itself is a nightmare trying to navigate from one area to another and limited parking outside. Not their best effort.
The venue is amazing. It's our "Go-To"place when entertaining or showing off our city to out of town guests. This visit was celebrating a friends birthday. After dining and finishing our amazing desserts, we got to explore with them and show them the amazing building. My favorite space is the Tiki Bar in the basement. The attention to detail is really mind blowing. I think the funniest part was having to say to a guy "sorry to be looking at the back of your head while using the urinal, but I wanted to show my friend the pipes"..
This will be a great source to entertain and show off to friends and family. Thank you and welcome to Tacoma. You've made this city a bit better for being here.
A wonderful piece of history joins an amazing collection of unique emotional excuersions for the soul. Definately bring friends!
Well lit and nice ambiance. The noise level is moderate but conversation is still audible. Tasty food that is well presented.
Great Date night! Great food, good view with a reservation. The only thing that was difficult was finding parking and even that wasn’t too hard.
Fun place to visit. We went to every floor (1-4) to check out the bars and just had a great time. Server was super nice and attentive, truffle fries were a must and beer list is top notch as always.
Food was not good and service wasn’t that great either. The ambiance was fun and different, they should spend more time on the quality of their food and service than on the atmosphere.
We celebrated 2 anniversaries at the restaurant. They wanted special comments on our reservation so I noted this. Nothing was mentioned at our dinner so I was little disappointed. But overall the food was very good, the service was great. the ambiance can't be beat with the amazing décor that is so interesting. It was during the week so didn't need a reservation since it was not busy. We started out at the Tiki bar and ordered tropical drinks that came in artistic glasses which added to the experience. We then went upstairs to the Pub restaurant. We had the hummus plate to start then one person had the elk burger which was plenty to eat and delicious. We also had the shrimp and grits which were more than one person could eat but also delicious. Pizza was good and the Aztec salad was very good also. We tried the beer sampler and the blend wine was delicious too. Overall the experience was very enjoyable and would recommend this gem in Tacoma to anyone. The different bars and rooms are so inviting. Next time we will spend longer there possibly experiencing another bar.
Excellent decoration & the food was very good
The atmosphere was great! The service was friendly but not very attentive. The food was pretty pricey. The Salmon at $30 was a pretty small portion. Dessert was great!
It was a great restaurant to celebrate my belated birthday and my brothers current birthday. Staff was awesome and helpful. All our food was good. Only real oops was you could tell my breakfast was the first done of our group of seven. Seemed like it saw the heat lamp maybe. My toast felt the biggest brunt of that. My scramble a bit baked but still delish since I used my grits to even it all out. All in all we had a very good celebration. We will be back!
Out of town guest
Really disappointed to have to write of a poor experience . I am a huge McMenamins fan and visit every location I can. We had reservations at Elks Temple and were seated promptly. Loved the venue and decor but the experience fell apart from there. Waitress was friendly but obviously burdened. She took our drink order and I ordered a dry Martini. A dirty martini arrived and I tried but could not drink it. Waitress apologized and said she heard dirty. Another drink arrived and it was a dirty again. Wait staff does not deliver drinks so no quality control there. I gave up at that point as meal was complete by time we saw our waitress again. Food was ok but nothing special. This occurred in the pub. Spoke to the manager Jesse who listened but that was it. Was visiting from out of state and planned to get gift certificate for our son who is in college in the area. Decided to pass:( hope they get it together. PS I opened flag ship restaurants so do know how service is supposed to be.
We ate in the restaurant: Arrived, ordered appetizers that were great. Food delivery was slow, waited almost an hour after ordering to receive. Sent the Wasabi/Salmon sandwich back because the salmon was way too dry. My wife ordered the cedar plank salmon, which was great but the quinoa was not seasoned. The Elk burger was the best on the table. For what we paid, I expected better.
My wife and I had a wonderful time here. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. The food was out of this world good! We can’t wait to come back.
Waitress was alone and busy, too many tables for just one person.
We enjoyed seeing the remarkable changes to the building.... lifelong Tacoma residents. Wish all the areas had been open. Restaurant service was excellent and friendly. It was unfortunate the elevator was out of service....this was a birthday lunch trip with 94 year old mom who was limited in number of stairs she could manage.
Delicious specials and cocktails!
Recommend yes, BUT with reservations, and I am sorry to write this as we have been to other McMenamins, and everything was fun, good, and enjoyable.
First the good is the food, and drinks. Blackberry cider delish. Have had before. Like other McM's creative, unique, and fun atmosphere overall. Cajun tots are a must.
However, the not so good....the service while pleasant, was slow and inattentive. Partly because she clearly had too many tables for one person. Food was slow, but it was good. Drinks were good, also slow to come out though.
More thought should have been given to the parking situation. Like around other places in downtown Tacoma, it is inadequate, but if we were staying at the hotel, it would have been exasperating. This was a Sunday at lunch, so I cannot imagine walking a long way in the dark.
Could be a great place, like many of the others, but when service is slow, and aloof, it tends to make even the best meal not a good memory. Sorry, we wanted to like it as we had just eaten at McM pub at Cornelius Pass Rd, and ALL was fantastic. In fact each time it has been good in all ways.
It was crazy crowded, and took 45 min to get our food, but, to be fair, we DID go on a Sunday at 11am so it was a really busy time.
Elks Temple is clearly the most interesting place in Tacoma for a night out. We had dinner in the Pub and the food and service were superb. I had that shrimp and grits which were among the best I have ever had. We will be back!
Went here for the first time for a concert and it was awesome! Great food and super friendly staff! The decor and art was definitely beautiful! I didn’t want to post a lot of pics cause you have to see it for yourself! We will be returning very soon!
My only complaint was that the Salmon I had was bit overcooked and dry. Other than that everything else was delicious.
The Good: The food itself was tasty. Comfort food executed well. Our server was great- total professional.
The no-good, awful, poorly managed:
Our reservations were for 12:15 on a Sunday. To have a birthday lunch for my wife with friends. Only we couldn’t have lunch because ONLY breakfast is served until 1PM! Now, I get the notion of brunch- with a mix of breakfast and lunch served until 1 or 2PM on the weekends. But no burgers until 1? Actually not even right at 1PM, because they will take every breakfast order until 1. Then they can’t break down breakfast and switch to lunch until after the final breakfast plate is served.
Which actually means no lunch would be served until almost 2PM.
Did I mention that as soon as we were seated the hostess informed us that ticket times were running over an hour?
That means that lunch actually isn’t served until after 3PM on Sundays. Which is about when I was finally served a burger.
The server did have management comp the price of my meal, which is the absolute least they could have done. Not once did a manager visit my table and apologize for poorly managing the restaurant.
I will advise folks to steer clear of this debacle on weekends.
We waited about 20 minutes to get service and finally had to waive a hostess down. The 2 servers in the area acted like we weren’t there. Never got waters. Never got second drink offer. Food was good and had there been another option in the area, we would have left, but it was a busy Saturday night.
All the restaurants are good and the cocktails are off the charts. Defenetly going to be back.
This building is so fun! Many bars and the restaurant was delicious. I suggest the cheesesteak! We went with a friend that had visited previous so she showed is around. The hidden bar is cool.
Once again McMenamins does a great job of renovation and creating a great space to eat, drink and have fun. The menu selections are good but the description didn't really match the food all that well. I was expecting something a bit different. It was good and the fries are just the way I like them. The service was a little bit lacking and took longer than it should. The restaurant was not hugely busy and it looked like they may have been a person short.
Love this location! And amazing ambience. Food is your typical McMenamins spread, but truffle tots are always a treat.
Fantastic time! Server in Pub and bartenders at the Spanish bar and vault were great! We’ll be back
