McLoone's Boat House Ratings and Reviews
When I read other reviews of overpriced food and poor service, I was concerned. We went on a Monday night so it wasn't overcrowded. There was a nice wood fire to add a great ambiance to a cold night. The restaurant is very attractive. In the summer, when you can see the water, it would probably be even better. I have to agree with several reviews: The food was only ok and the price was relatively high in NJ for the quantity and quality. E.g., $40 for 2 small crab cakes. The $20 Monday night burger special was a good deal. The service was ok but with some oddities. E.g., the special included beer or wine. We'd first ordered a bottle of wine. The server somehow thought he shouldn't bring the beer or wire included in the meal price. Overall, I'd go again but not on any regular basis. The noise level was good because there was no crowd.
We've returned to McLoone's several times because it offers a nice menu and presentation and is close to home. I imagine we would return once in a while if it was further away because the location (next to county park, reservoir, and walking path) There is a fabulous outdoor dining but always crowded so we haven't chosen to wait. Two of us had fish entrees the other night and enjoyed them, and a French chardonnay.
This restaurant has a fantastic view...My party of 3 were here on a Saturday night around 830pm...it wasnt busy at all however we waited over 40min for our food and it wasnt hot or flavorful...i didnt want to send anything back for fear of the kitchen doing something gross to it...A man in a suit (maybe the manager, he didnt introduce himself) was going to each table asking about the food and overall experience...when we told him it took too long for the food to come out he didnt say anything, he didnt apologize or give an explanation, he just strugg his shoulders and went to the next table...It was an awful experience. I will not be going back or referring anybody that i know to go there
Went for drinks and appetizers and the hear the music of Jake and the Mayor. Stayed for 2 sets; excellcent cover of a variety of songs from different eras. The Seafood sampler was excellent. Clams, oysters, shrimp and crab were as fresh as can be. The wings had just the right amount of sweet and hot. McLoone's never fails to please.
I've eaten here before and always sat on the left side of the restaurant and found it lovely. On Sat. nite we were seated on the right side and found it very disappointing. it was loud and very gloomy. We felt like we were in a cafeteria. No ambience.
Prior to eating , we did sit outside for appetizers and it was abslolutely perfect. Waiter service was excellent.
This was my family's first time dining at McLoone's The restaurant is quite large, with different rooms, and also offers outdoor dining and a great outdoor space for cocktails, etc. with a fire pit. It has great space for private parties, etc. In fact, there was a wedding reception taking place in a private room while we were there. Everyone agreed that food was good, but felt the menu was a little overpriced. However, the portions are big. The service was outstanding. We didn't feel rushed, but never had to search for our server when needed. The restaurant has a good selections of cocktails and an extensive wine list, as well.
Went there for pre-theatre and waitress was attentive and put order in right away. Very noisy and crowded bar at entrance, but DR was cozy w fireplace going and comfortable, much quieter. Food was over-priced but OK -good for the most part, altho my $32.00 raw seafood sampler had very small-sized clams and oysters and the shrimps were overcooked and dry. The side salad was nothing special, MINISCULE w only some greens and a few chopped veggies, not worth $6.00. My meal was > $50 !
Would go there again for drinks, maybe some bar food, cause ambience and setting are really nice. But food was quite ordinary and very pricey for its quality and quantity.
We went to McLoone's for their Sunday brunch to celebrate my mother's birthday. While I think the buffet option was a little pricey ($35), there was a rich variety of food from an omelette station to pasta and a raw bar. They were able to accommodate our party of seven plus two children without a problem. I was slightly disappointed when the waitress told my mother that her birthday cake was in the back. It was supposed to be a surprise. However, it was an honest mistake.
Unfortunately we were disappointed with our visit. Food was very expensive and only fair. Service was terrible. We ate outside, and the ambiance was beautiful then it got cool and windy. We planned to sit outside by the fire pit after dinner, but then when we got outside, there were several smokers of cigarettes and cigars, and made it uncomfortable for a non-smoker. Ended up leaving early. The place is probably best for a happy hour drink and maybe an appetizer.
The hostess didn’t treat us like we had a reservation and made us wait along with guests who just walked in. She never told us how long it would be for a table to be ready. We were on a time schedule so we wound up sitting at the bar, which we could have done w/o a reservation and w/ o waiting for the hostess to figure out where to seat us. Won’t be returning.
Waitress was friendly but brought the desert tray when we said we didn't want to see it. She said she had to show it to us anyway. Drinks were awful, Bloody Mary not even half drank. Food was good but portions were very, very skimpy. Not even a handful of fries and about a handful of calamari appetizer for 5 of us.
If not for the beautiful view of the lake I would not recommend.
Went on a Monday night in early October the restaurant was not crowded. Received outstanding service from our waiter, Woody. Food was ok, not bad, not great. My only complaint is that the music is too loud in main dining area. Will visit again when weather is warmer to enjoy the outdoor seating area.
McLoone's is a new addition to Essex County with regards to the updates made to the parks in the South Mountain Reservation area. The food is good with many selections in appetizers, entrees - both seafood and meat and cocktails. Eating outside is very nice if the weather is warm and inside if you are near the fireplace. The restaurant is quite noisy so if you want an intimate setting ask for a table far away from others.
We did not like our server who seemed like she did not want to be there. I know everyone has an "off" night but it seemed all the waiters were like that. And our hostess was not friendly.
We had a lovely time at McCloones. We received a gift card, which is why we made the reservation. I had read some negative reviews about refills on water, waiting long for food, etc. Our waitress, Marsala, greeted us right away, brought water and bread came out right away, soups, salads and appetizers came out in the order we asked for, she kept refilling water, etc. The food was excellent. Our table had a lovely view of the water and the ducks. It is obviously a family place, so it is a little louder, but it's happy noise. Cant wait to bring our grandchildren there after a game of Mini-golf!
Very Disappointing: Upon making reservation on OpenTable, I requested Outside Table. When I checked in, they asked if I wanted to sit inside or outside and did not see my request. They advised they would text me when my table was available. As we know, my cell # is on file. After waiting 20 minutes, I went up to the desk and they asked for my cell so they could add it to their other system. We waited another 20 minutes. Restaurant should have servers checking water glasses and make continuous rounds. Had to wait to find wait staff just to get water filled. One little dish of oil for 3 people to share. The best was when I asked for a to go box for my half rack of ribs. I was handed a plastic bag and container. I would only expect this at a fast food restaurant. I didn't complain. I just slid my ribs into the container. One of my hand wipes was covered with BBQ sauce when delivered to the table. Overall, not a good experience. Disappointing. Went through many hoops just to dine outdoors. It's not cheap and will take much convincing for me to return and refer others.
The establishment is beautiful! The brunch food was well displayed . My only complaint is that by 1:00 ( brunch starts at noon ) they were not refilling the buffet so that people could either start getting food or others could go back up for seconds.
They even ran out of plates . They finally came out with wet plates and dried each one by hand which caused people to have to wait for plates. The ambience I give a 9 for . The food I give an 8 for. Service a 8 for . Running out of food and not to keep refilling I give a 2! It's not cheap at all ( the price) and for what you pay for this it should be refilled immediately! If you do book this establishment for brunch then get there when it starts and fill your plate up. Don't expect to go back and to find what you didn't try to be there
While I will say our food was all excellent the service was horrible. My husband and I had never been before and decided to try it for our anniversary. The restaurant is about 40 minutes from our home. We sat down and almost immediately a waiter dropped a shrimp appetizer on our table and proceeded to walk away we had to yell to him to come back because it wasn't ours- we hadn't even ordered yet. We ordered drinks and appetizers from our waiter who came back ten minutes later because he forgot what appetizers we ordered. We sat near the bar so we could see my husbands beer sitting there for 5-7 minutes before it was brought to our table. We were basically finished with our appetizers by the time our waiter came to see how it was. I had to remind him we were still waiting to order our entrees. Might I add while eating our appetizers another waiter brought two entrees to our table that again did not belong to us. Not once did our waiter stop at our table to ask how our entrees were. By the time he came over we had been finished about 10-15 minutes and waiting for him so we could request to go boxes. He never offered us coffee or dessert. Honestly we would have turned dessert down because we had already been there for 2 hours- most of which we were waiting around for our waiter. Again, our food was great and I have no complaints there but for the caliber of restaurant we expected so much more when it came to the service aspect. We were certainly disappointed and probably won't make the drive again.
We were there celebrating my dad's 80th birthday on Saturday 9/9. There were a few private events going on which isn't normally the case. This made it a little louder than usual since seating was limited. However, my dad loved it, the food, and of course being with family.
everything was lovely EXCEPT i forgot to present my 10% discount coupon. We were seated outside and it started to rain. No one asked us if we want to go inside..So we stayed in the rain..not a big deal..but it would have been nice to be redirected. :-) Ronni Krauser
We've been at McLoone's many times and usually it's a good experience. This time there were a few things that weren't done well and weren't addressed well. We were given 2 wrong drinks and instead of taking those out of the check, they were left. Also, when we were asked for soda refills we assumed they're free, but they weren't. We don't mind the cost but it would've been nice to be told that they're not free. I'm not sure if we're going back there again.
