McCormick & Schmick's Seafood - Washington DC (K Street) Ratings and Reviews
Overall, the food was delicious. I was really expecting much more from this restaurant being I have heard so much about it in the past. However, I was disappointed to find out that they did not offer combination seafood or sample platters like most seafood restaurants. Also, for the price of their foods, they should offer a much better selection on the menu to choose from. The service was excellent and the dessert was also delicious, but to be honest with you, I don't think I will be going back to McCormick and Schmick's. I have found other seafood restaurants in the vicinity that are not as highly known as McCormick and Schmick's, but offers a more variety of foods with much cheaper prices.
We were celebrating our 31st anniversary and chose the K Street location. Though quite lovely it became crowded and noisy. One of our entrees was exceeded expectations, while the other fell short. We know that it was likely an aberration in dining experiences at McCormick and Schmick, as we have been to one other location in D.C., but that visit was timed to follow the dinner "rush hour". To be fair, The K Street experience occurred on July 4th during dinner "rush hour" and this likely accounts for many of our concerns. Our waiter, though impeccable in most every way, was overly busy; thankfully his personality and thoughtfulness made up for his inability to be as attentive as we needed at times.
I have dined at this M&S several times during the month of June. The three prior times were excellent; but, this time was the worst. We were seated right away but no one brought water to our table. We also had to ask for bread two times before our server brought it to us. Perhaps they were short-handed, perhaps our server was having a bad day. For the money that we pay for meals at M&S, we expected better service and more attentiveness - our server never asked how we liked our meal. Speaking of meal, I order the Maine lobster steamer and it is very misleading because one would think that you get a whole lobster tail; but the dish came out with a half tail that was very mushy and lacking in flavor.
The service and the food was great. However, when we ordered Earl Grey tea we received Green tea (twice).
Since the bags were not marked I believe someone loaded the Earl Grey container with the wrong tea.
It was not a big deal but it took a little bit of the "shine" off a perfect occasion.
I went to the restaurant with a business associate. We were seated at a two-top next to the aisle with all of the waiter traffic. We asked to move to one of several empty tables but were told that we could not. We were not happy with the seating. The food was excellent, especially the gazpacho.
Great dinner and great service. We were a group of six and our waiter was incredibly helpful in advising us on appetizers and entrees. We all had different fish entrees and they were superb. The fish was fresh and cooked just right so that the flavor of the fresh fish came through without being overwhelmed by sauces. My crabcakes were fantastic.
A solid restaurant with fresh-tasting food. The service was good, and it's a great place to have a business lunch in downtown Washington DC. The two-person tables could be a bit more spaced apart, but it's still fine. Booths are great. My office staff goes here all the time.
Thoroughly enjoyed the monkfish and the bottle of Mark West Pinot Noir at 50% off with the use of M&S Wednesday only coupon. The manager even packaged the remaining wine for me to take out of the restaurant. A really great deal!!! The receipt also offered a $10 off next food purchase with a code that you get after completing a short survey online. Will be returning soon.
I always go to McCormick with my friend from Ghana when she is in town. We noticed yesterday that the front of the house was impeccable, but our waiter was not at all ready to be taking care of us. He admitted that he had been there only two weeks. We will come again, because this is the first bad experience we have had in our several years of making this the space we come to visit and celebrate...
I never write reviews, and I very rarely complain to a restauraunt. This was one of the worst experiences I've had at a "fine dining" establishment. While the food was prepared correctly, my portion of Halibut was just . . . tiny, at $28. The service was the slowest I've expierenced in the U.S. It took 15 - 20 minutes to get our drinks, for a table of two guys -- AFTER we had to flag down a waiter NOT responsible for our table. Our own waiter made the usual lame apology (gee, everyone came at once), as if M&S is caught by surprise by the dinner rush. And it wasn't even much of a rush. A Monday evening, probably 80% of tables were occupied. I doubt I'll go back, which is too bad because it's nearby and I love fish.
Our dinner experience was fair at best. Before the main course my wife and I had the house salad and seafood chowder. The highlight of the dinner was the chowder. It was thick and tasteful. We both enjoyed it very much. The salad was not the same experience. It was dripping vinaigrette and lacked the fresh ground pepper that other patrons seem to get offered from their waiters. Ours seemed to forget that part and many other things that others seem to receive. Most notably good service. Multiple tables that were seated after ours were enjoying their dinners well before we had our salads. I had the 9oz steak with stuffed shrimp and my wife had the swordfish. Both lacked flavor and would not be suggested as a must order.
I used to love M&S (Tyson's location) but after a long break we visited the K street one and none of the three people in our party was happy with their food. The flounder dish is just way too oily. And while a handmade crab cake shouldn't necessarily look perfect, it should not look like a broken fish stick either. The fresh combos (3 items) are simply perfectly grilled fillets but without any sauce and the wedge of lemon is not enough to add any flavor. The food and drink was nowhere what one would expect for the near $200 we paid for three people and our guest, who had never been to M&S, said it was Outback quality food-wise and a lot less fun. However the wine selection and the appetizers are pretty good.
Excellent experience! The food was outstanding. We particularly enjoyed the size of the portions...NOT TOO BIG! Most restaurants may serve good food, but they serve enormous portions which tend to leave you so full there is no room for desert, or you can't finish and need to take home the excess. The portions here, were perfect. The 6oz Filet not the 9oz, good size portion of mashed potatoes, but not so much you waste some of get stuffed from finishing. The Mahi-mahi was also the perfect size with the perfect compliment of sweet potatoes and shrimp.
Plus adding a commemortive Menu with "24 THE FINAL EPISODE ... MAY 24, 2010" typed on the menu was PRICELESS.
Food was terrific! Rest of the experience was average at best. Even after calling three times to confirm reservations, telling them it was a special occasion, and requesting a booth, we showed up on time (actually 5 minutes early) and ended up waiting 20 minutes until a booth opened up. Because of its central location downtown, this M&S seems to rely on the weekend tourist crowd and will take anyone dressed in anything... not the best M&S for any celebration... go to Reston or CC for that.
