McCormick & Schmick's Seafood - Washington DC (K Street) Ratings and Reviews
I reserved McCormick & Schmicks for my husband's birthday. We arrived & they sat us by a beautiful wide window looking out to the street. What a view! This place is like stepping back in time to a mixture of 60s, 70s & modern. The architecture & ambience are awesome. The picture ceilings & dark, cozy atmosphere are perfect for conversation & romance. I requested a small note saying "Happy birthday" for Kyle but they went above & beyond by printing a special menu for us with my note. Truly a keepsake. The Mojito I had was delicious. Kyle had the filet & it was one of the best steaks he has had. The white cheddar red pepper mash was absolutely fantastic! We both were floored at the beauty of the restaurant. The staff was so friendly & helpful. I would absolutely recommend McCormick & Schmick's to anyone. We will be visiting again.
My experience at other McCormick and Schmick's has been stellar, but my dinner on August 16, 2017 was subpar. Service was unapologetically slow. Food was bland. I asked for decaf coffee following the meal and my colleague ordered an apple based desert. We waited and waited for both. When coffee came, it was half a cup and just warm. I did get a refill after a fresh pot was brewed. These may seem trivial, but slow service through the entire meal was unacceptable. It's not the chain, its just this link that was weak.
I had a really great time on my dinner date here. The food was wonderful (I got the lump crab tower appetizer and steak and lobster entree). Our server was really attentive and gave great advice on his favorites because there are a lot of yummy sounding things on the menu. Also, there is a Saturday happy hour until 7pm! We got in just before it was over and the bartender let us put in our orders for drinks which we were allowed to bring to our table. Friendly staff and quality food. I was worried that I'd be under dressed in a t-shirt but the attire ranges from business casual to casual. I've been here for lunch before but the ambiance is a bit nicer in the evening.
Services was slow and disorganized (EX: bread was delivered to me considerably after the meal arrived). Salmon was overcooked and dry. It simply wasn't an enjoyable experience. The only thing that was good about it was the restaurant's proximity to my hotel.
This is my 2nd attempt as a Landry club member to have a pleasant experience at this location. Lump Crab Tower appetizer sent back for fishy tasting, gray looking crab meat. Entree ordered told not available, so I made another choice which I was looking forward to. Only to be presented by the first choice order looking like a plate that someone else didn't want and they reserved it (I know that was not the case but it looked awful and tasted worse AND was 35.00!!!
Sad because Crystal City is a good unit. I will NEVER be back to the DC location. The only good thing was the molten chocolate birthday cake. I don't think they charged me for that.
Told hostess we needed a quiet table for business discussion. She took us to a booth between two long tables seating 30 each with a noise level of a Bavarian beerfest. Finally persuaded her we need a quiet spot and found it at the front of the restaurant. 15 minutes before waiter came by. Ordered wine which took another 15 minutes and we then ordered appetizer and entree. Half hour later appetizers arrived and three minutes after that entrees were plunked down on the table and the waiter left, for good. Meal finished but no service in sight. New hostess suddenly appeared to ask if we were enjoying our visit. Suggested she find waiter who scurried back with bill. Never again. I was embarrassed to have taken business visitors to this place.
Poor service. Some of the entrees were warm at best when served. Took them for ever to bring our pre dinner drinks and appetizers to us. We had to share menus. Waiter never checked with us to see if we were pleased, satisfied, etc. Swordfish was
overcooked and dry. This was for a group of 12 customers and directors. They were not impressed. I do not plan to host a function at this location or any location of this restaurant chain in the future.
The pros. Food was excellent. I had the Lump Crab Tower and the Seared Scallops. My husband had the Walnut Salad Greens and a Special which was Tuna with black peppercorns and a wasabi mash. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted very good. The service was great.
The cons. When I made the reservation I said it was a birthday celebration and I overheard the wait staff being informed it was a birthday table, but we were in no way treated any differently. That's fine, but why ask? When the server gave us the specials for appetizer and entree he asked if he could have us order those right away. I didn't like this method of pushing the specials. At the end of our meal the server encouraged us to become a member of McCormick and Schmick's Landry's Select Club and began a three minute schpiel on the rewards and benefits. It would be way better for the company to have a card on the table so that people can read and ask about it if they're interested. But to make people sit through it and feel uncomfortable about declining is too pushy for me.
The Lump Crab tower was delicious. But it wasn't a tower. Put away thoughts in your mind of onion ring towers that are 16" tall! It was about 2.5-3" tall and was in fact, more of a terrine. The scallops were delicious too, but a little in the small size for an entrée. I'd include a side of a carb if I were to order again.
Not a great selection of beer. My husband had to order Guinness as there was no IPA on the menu.
To start, No greeting whatsoever by Hostess at front counter when we arrived. We were actually ignored for a minute while teaching a new hostess what to do.
Then 30 minutes later, the Manager would not (or could not) put on the air conditioning. Guests were removing suit jackets and sweating up a storm.
Next, at 6:30pm, after the waiter recommended tuna as the 'must get' signature dish, and two of my guests ordered it, he returns to tell us they ran out. At 6:30pm!
The trout simply did not taste good. At first, I thought it was spoiled. The excessive almonds overwhelmed the taste of the fish, it was dry, it just did not taste good.
Next, slowest waiter ever. Yes, I missed my train home. He finally delivered the check with no 'thank you'. He picked up the check with the same silence.
The funny thing is I meant to go to Oceanaire around the corner, which is always top-notch, but my secretary booked the wrong restaurant. I will never return here again. Try Oceanaire for FRESH fish and seafood.
Steak went back 3 times for me and twice for my wife. Wanted medium, came well. Wife wanted rare got medium well. When they brought her a new one it was great. They brought mine back and it was med rare. They tried and just couldn't get it right. Disappointing.
The service was great from the time we walked in the door. Tayvon, our server, I hope I am saying his name correctly was amazing. Very mannerable, very hospitable, everything he recommended we tried and liked. His service alone was 5 star. The food was delicious. The atmosphere was just great. All round the setting, atmosphere and service was top notch. Would most definitely recommend and return.
