McCormick & Schmick's Seafood - San Jose Ratings and Reviews
I made reservations to eat at the restaurant because we had tickets to see "Beautiful" just a few short blocks away. We were caught in terrible traffic so I called the restaurant 10 min. before our reservations to give them a heads up that we'd probably be about 15 minutes late. We let them know we had an 8pm show and they assured us we would be fine. When we got there they seated two other parties, made us wait several more minutes and then seated us in the worst table in the restaurant, in the bar area, next to the kitchen under such bright lights you feel like you are going to be interrogated. The host insisted that they had no other tables available in the restaurant. We were not happy and said so. He didn't even bother to give us menus when he took us to the table. I just happened to have been holding one because I was looking at it while waiting to be seated. We had to flag down another person who worked there to ask for a menu! I asked the waitress if the lights could possibly be dimmed a bit. She said people complain about the lighting all the time. Obviously management doesn't care or they would have corrected that. She dimmed them a bit. Three times during the meal someone turned them back up! I asked for my fish cooked medium. It came out dry, which is not medium but of course we couldn't wait for it to be redone so I ate a very dry $30 piece of fish. In the end we decided to give their loyalty program a try since we do end up there when we go to shows downtown and they claim you get preferred seating. We chatted with the manager when he brought the card over. We usually have a much better experience at McCormick & Schmick and that is why we were willing to try the program, but I let the manager know if we are ever seated at that table again we won't be back. He did end up giving us a discount, which we appreciated, but that was not the point. The point was to have an enjoyable dinner out. It was not.
Usually enjoy this restaurant but the service was slow. By the time we got our food served it felt as though it had been sitting under a heat lamp for an extended period. We had tickets for a show and had to rush out even though we had been there for almost two hours.
The food was good and we like the outdoor seating. However, the service was spotty (we experience this almost every time we dine here). Not the server's fault - The kitchen is slow and the bar backs up. The pictures on the desert menu are standard Photoshop - not accurate and the menu descriptions are not totally accurate as well - the trout with butternut squash - it was hard to find the butternut squash - it was more of a mixed veg with no butternut squash....
Food was very good. We had an early reservation and service was fine until it got busy around 6:00. My husband ordered a second glass of wine when our main entree was served but the wine didn't come until he was almost finished with his meal. Dessert took a half hour to be served. Restaurant gets really noisy when it got busy especially from the bar as there is not much separation between the bar and dining room. If you plan to go I would recommend eating early or after the dinner rush. There might be a staffing problem as our waiter kept apologizing for taking so long to check on us.
Family it 7 went a for special Veterans Day dinner promotional offer. Food and service were excellent. Lots of different choices for food. Server was very attentive. Table was very private, but a little noisy since it was next to kitchen. Definitely a good experience. Only negative is restaurant ambiance looked a bit dated, it needs an upgrade.
My girlfriend and I went there for the Veteran's Lunch Celebration and it was one of the best lunches we've had in a long time. Our waitress, Karla, was very friendly and helpful. We did not feel rushed at all and the food was exceptional. We both had the Salmon Rigatoni and it was delicious! We hope to go back again soon. Thank you!!
I have been to McCormick & Schmick's a few times. The food is excellent! The flounder I had last Sunday was fabulous!! This is a very special place to go to because of the quality of their food, their courteous service and a serene atmosphere. Their service is superb!
McCormick & Schmick's is a little pricy but it's well worth the extra dollar you pay for a meal, not only because of the delicious food but because of their excellent service. You are pampered from the minute you set foot at their door. Even the manager goes to your table to make sure that everything is okay and that you're enjoying your meal.
I highly recommend McCormick & Schmick's...and I'm very picky!
My steak was good, her salmon was average.
My vegetables were burned.
The salad was limp.
The coffee was lukewarm.
The prices were pretty high, considering the overall average quality of ingredients.
The place is pretty loud. Few customers dress well, many Levi’s and ball caps.
Can’t recommend it these days, especially if you’re trying to impress someone.
We met old friends at McCormick & Schmick's recently and enjoyed an unhurried meal and conversation for over three hours. Our waitress, Andrea, added to the evening by joining in quick-witted repartee with us that resulted in much laughter. The chopped greens salad was excellent, and all four of us enjoyed the mixed grill with beef medallions and two lobster tails. This restaurant has been our get-together spot for many years because the atmosphere, food and service are so good.
An excellent pre-concert dinner on every count but one. The food was excellent; the service was as good as we've ever experienced. The only negative was a dessert (the "Chocolate Bag") which comes smothered in assorted berries, which are an allergy issue. Our waiter readily agreed to serve it without the berries and even added more white chocolate mousse to fill the molded dark chocolate "bag." But the plate was still garnished with what appeared to be a "pool" of raspberry puree, and the "bag" sat in the middle of it, so I couldn't eat most of the dark chocolate. However, we WILL return, and will be more specific when I order the same dessert again, which I will definitely do.
They were out of 5 of the 15 choices of Chardonnay, out of Crème Brulee - one of the two desserts on the Sunday thru Thursday menu (it was Sunday) and out of Whaoo - a fish. Service was slow, food was adequate but expensive and the staff really didn't seem to give a damn. Will not be back
We were given happy birthday menus, which was such a nice way to be acknowledged. The meal service was polite and attentive. We were asked a number of times who the birthday person was (we had two), so it was a little anticlimactic that there wasn’t any other acknowledgement for the birthday folks — no candle in the dessert, etc. Honestly after the buildup it seemed like an oversight. Other than that, I would totally recommend this establishment for a birthday group.
So-so. I ordered a martini very cold— it came in a warm glass (out of the dishwasher maybe?). Then my swordfish came out pretty much raw. They did re-cook another piece but by that time my dining mates were almost done. Everyone else’s meal was okay but probably won’t be coming here again soon
All in all, skip M&S and spend $260 elsewhere. I was looking forward to this birthday celebration. It had been a few years since I had dined at M&S. We had a reservation and when we arrived, it was as if they weren't expecting us and said we'll have to see what we can find for you. It was a Saturday night, but wasn't super busy but finally got a table . It took awhile our server to arrive & wine as well. The mussels there are my favorites there, so I was really looking forward to having them again. What a huge disappointment - they had a funky smell (from roasting the shells?). The broth, which I had remembered as slightly spicy & rich to be completely soaked up by the bread, was the opposite. It was a benign, uninspired flavorless broth, and with the unappetizing smell of the shells, it was hard to finish them and we definitely did not sop up the broth. The second appetizer was a single crab large cake so it was too difficult to share. While it had a lot of crab in it, it was gummy, probably because it was not cooked through all the way. We had better hopes for the salads but were again disappointed - the Caesar salads were underdressed and dry. However, my son had the wedge salad which looked great and he enjoyed it. We had high hopes for the entrees to save the evening. I had the salmon stuffed with crab and shrimp - while the portion was large, it was under-seasoned and just a bit overcooked so it was not moist enough and so simply not enjoyable. It came with mashed potatoes - lukewarm and so dry that I couldn't even finish them. Did they come from a box? My son's blackened red fish was overcooked and super dry. His entrée came with andouille mashed potatoes, not quite as dry as mine. My husband's steak was ok, cooked to his request but nothing special. The only saving grace of the evening was his lobster mashed potatoes and the Riesling (Saint M). How sad is that. We didn't order dessert - no reason to stay for more disappointment.
Disappointed because we had positive experiences in the past. For this visit, my wife's swordfish was dry. My blackened rockfish was tasty but I was surprised to find a number of bones in it. More disappointing was the andouille mashed potatoes. Tasty but cold and clearly not fresh. We won't be going back.
Appetizers, salads, sides were great. Two steaks ordered medium, both came well done with no pink meat what so ever. One steak sent back With new one brought out by server with attitude, steak was beyond rare. Disappointing since everything else was great. Molten cake was not molten, just warm chocolate cake. Must have been same chef that cooked the steaks.
