McCormick & Schmick's Seafood - Kansas City Ratings and Reviews
We went here for my birthday dinner. This place feels special. Stained glass rotunda and there was also a stained glass panel of the battleship Missouri ( Mighty Mo ).
We started with the Calamari and it was excellent. Very tender with a light, crispy batter and two dipping sauces; a marinara and an aioli.
Next we each had the Surf & Turf. The tenderloin was perfectly cooked to medium with just a slight crust / sear on the outside but not overly seasoned. That was perfect for my wife but I could have used a bit more. The Bordelaise sauce was rich & thick. The Lobster tail was firm but tender and had good flavor.
Surf & Turf always presents a bit of an issue with me when choosing which wine to have. Our server suggested the Wine Feature which was a Pinot Noir from Oregon. This wine was what I call "soft'. Medium body, not too fruity with very low tannin. It went very well with the tenderloin and ok with the lobster. Might try a sparkling Rose next time.
For dessert my wife chose the Creme Brulee and I had the Upside-Down Walnut Apple Pie. The top of the Creme Brulee was overly caramelized and a bit burnt tasting. The Apple pie was warm and simply fabulous.
Overall, a very pleasant experience.
The food is exquisite, however, it is extremely loud and the table we were sat at had way too much traffic going back and forth. Made it very difficult to relax and enjoy the food. Our waitress was obviously having a bad day and we were experiencing her bad attitude from the second she approached our table. This is not an inexpensive lunch, typically averages $55 per person without drinks, so it would really have made it better if the server was a bit nicer. We felt like we were really putting her out by her having to work that day.
Always make a reservation at this location.
The steak and lobster were both overcook to be at 10:00am. My Blackened Fettucinie had too many big chunks of green pepper which were not stated on the menu. If I were the cook, I would have chopped all the peppers (green and yellow) into smaller pieces. I removed almost a small plate full of green peppers. I'm not sure if there was a rush due to the Veteran Day Meal. The waitress was really good, just too chipper for an early morning. Although our experience wasn't a good one, I would go back to give it another try. I really can't complain too much because the Blackened Fettucinie was a Veterans Day Thank you. I really appreciate the meal.
We took our son and his family for a birthday dinner. It was a miserable evening. We were herded like cattle, rushed to the point of the wait staff bring our entrees without removing the appetizer plates or the salads, and even trying to set my entree on top of the empty appetizer plate. My son confronted the server asking him to slow down and please speak quieter because he was loud and pushy. His response was to tell us they were really busy, and continue to rush us. We repeatedly had to ask for things like silverware and water and the forgotten vegetable sides.. our 12 year old granddaughter asked me if the servers at nice restaurants are always in a hurry because “this place just makes people nervous”. We are seafood lovers and live in a Plaza condo, but won’t be returning to McCormicks. We paid our bill but felt the almost $500 evening was an unpleasant experience.
The chocolate bag dessert arrived at the table less than half full. When I ask the server why it wasn’t the usual size, he reminded me they were very busy and rushed. At that point I just wanted the evening to be over!!!
What was once a nice restaurant now feels like a tourist trap with poorly trained staff and very sloppy service.
went for a birthday, which we put on our notes in open table. however, the host failed to tell the waiter! that meant he did not know, did not ask about it, and no special treatment --:( which we were hoping for. food was good. waitress was in training, and brand new, but her trainer was very good. expensive so be ready.
So we arrived at the restuarant for our anniversary/promotion celebration 10 minutes prior to our reservation after driving 45 minutes, stopped in the bar to get a drink and went directly back to the waiting area. I guess within the 5 minutes we were at the bar they had called our table so we ended up sitting in the front lobby 35 minutes with no one in there until finally someone asked the hostess who we were. We finally got seated and after looking at our menus for 10 minutes no one even approached our table to give us waters or greet us. We ended up leaving because for $35+ a plate I expect to at least be acknowledged. It was pretty sad and we ended up going to Jazz Louisiana kitchen and got great service. It was an unfortunate attempt at our anniversary/promotion dinner and had plans to spend a lot of money and treat our waiter/waitress with respect... sadly we didn't have service with the same intent. I've eaten here previously and it was great, not sure what has happened to the place.
We had a 6 pm reservation and were not seated until I prompted the hostess at 6:20 that we had a theatre show to attend after dinner and now we were pressed for time. The server was probably a great server, he had a very good demeanor but it took quite a while to get our food.
In the end, we had to ask for the check as soon as the meal was served so there was no real "dining experience" only hope that we could get the food eaten and not be late. Maybe we should have given ourselves more time, but I figured 90 minutes would be plenty and would have been, if we had been seated at the time of our reservation.
There must have been a glitch because I received an email from Opentable about not showing up for our dinner.
Overall the food was fine and it may have been just an off night.
I have contacted corporate offices to report that we told our server we had ballet tickets and had to leave by 7pm. We had cocktails, appetizer and salads and these were finished before 6:30. At 6:58 entrees were served after our server reportedly checking on them multiple times. We had to have meals boxed and left. The manager came over and said she would take care of it. She only comped one cocktail each. We spent over $200 for three meals we didn’t get to eat as they had to sit unrefridgerated for 3 plus hours. No need to go back.
Beautiful huge stained glass ceiling covers the raised dining area. We were pleased they fulfilled our custom request for cooking the trout. McCormick & Schmick's aims to please all of your taste buds for every course of the meal. We appreciated the friendliness of the staff including the manager's warm send-off.
It was my first time dining here and it was wonderful. We had a trainee as our server, accompanied by his trainer, and he did a great job. He was a little timid to start but he was great after that. He made great suggestions, which we did end up ordering one of them (the stuffed shrimp). It was a great experience and I would love to go back, especially for happy hour or brunch.
