Maya Mexican Grill - Downtown
One of the best Mexican meals I've had in quite a while. A step above the typical Tex-Mex.
Great margaritas, appetizers and mains with all fresh ingredients prepared with a creative Mexican flair
Great environment, attentive service without being overbearing, excellent food and drinks! Will be back!
Great find for out of towners! Food was wonderful as was our server and it was very close to our hotel (within walking distance) which was a bonus!
Maya Mexican Grill is just the place to celebrate after a terrific performance by Virginia Opera at the Dominion Energy Center. We had a wonderful server named Natalie, and the food was flawless. I had seviche and the incomparable roasted cauliflower salad, and my husband had the pulled pork Taco and a chicken enchilada. The food is tangy, Bright, and includes surprisingly delightful fruit touches, such as a bit of mango or pineapple or even pomegranate! Terrific way to just light up a dish. We enjoyed ourselves very much and the food was good value too. We'll be back!
Great variety of food choices...excellent service. Relaxed atmosphere..no rushing! Convenient for an early supper after a matinee performance at the Dominion Center.
Good Mexican restaurant , guacamole is really fresh and tasty not to spicy.
We were worried at first because we asked for a different table than they were planning to seat us at and it took a very long time for the staff to clean and re-set the table. After we were seated, we had an excellent experience. Our server Claire was outstanding. She was friendly, responsive, patient, and went above and beyond to accommodate our 14-yr.-old vegan daughter. (FYI, she ended up with a mixture of black beans and corn, guacamole, and flour tortillas and she was very happy. Other than veggies, there were really no other vegan options.) The trio of guacs was delicious, as was the queso appetizer; chicken enchiladas entrees were very good. Tres leches cake was yummy. We will definitely be returning here when we visit our VCU student in Richmond.
We are regular patrons and fans but last night was a disappointment. Service was slow. It was 10 minutes before we saw a server despite the fact that the restaurant was nearly empty at 6. The server has not been trained—she served from the wrong side and putting the drinks in the wrong location which resulted in spilling 2 of them partially on the table.
My tamal was not hot when I received it.
We will be back because we are generally fans but last night was not your best effort.
We went for my partners bday. Our server was very busy but maintained amazingly... even with what seemed to be a struggling Air conditioning. There was 10 of us and she even cut our cake at the end. She was great and the food was great and also the drinks!
The service was slow. We sat down at 5:50 and did not get our food until 6:45 when we had to be at a show at 7:00. They didn't take drink order until 6:15.
I would recommend with reservations meaning we were almost late to the ballet which was across the street. We told our server we needed to be at ballet at 7 when we arrived at 5:30. Our main course was served at 6:40
Service was great from start to finish. Food was excellent and promptly served. Great place to eat before a show at The National!
We went to Maya for a brunch that wasn't just weird omelets and chicken 'n waffles, and we were not disappointed. Maya is a fabulous looking little restaurant with an impressive décor aesthetic dedicated in part to Frida Kahlo. The place was virtually empty when we went at 11:30, a little odd for prime brunch time on a Sunday, but that just meant we were able to truly enjoy the great service by our server, Claire. She checked in the right amount of times and made very good recommendations. The guacamole we started with was delicious, if not a little expensive as guac typically is. I had the carne asada tacos, which were absolutely delicious and quite reasonably priced. My husband, who orders enchiladas everywhere, made the comment the enchiladas he had are among the best he had ever had. The rose sangria I had was also very delicious, well balanced and not too sweet. The only negative in the whole experience were the flies, there were at least three zooming around the restaurant, one of which ended up in my yummy sangria. That being said, Claire didn't even hesitate to take it back and get a new one once I showed her. Overall, everything was beautifully presented and the service was great. I have to warn, my husband was weary of portion sizing because of some pics he saw, but we found they just use big plates, the portions are very reasonable.
Everything was so delicious. From the limeade to the rice and tacos to the churros. Highly recommend and will happily go back!
The best anniversary dinner ever! Loved the atmosphere, decor, and the food was amazing!! My husband said the cerviche was next level over what his father used to make! The Hibiscus Pisco Sours are scrumptious! The Tumbada and the tamal are the best dishes in the house. Maria's vision comes through in the flavors of everything she touches! We will be back soon!!!
Fabulous, excellent menu, impeccable service
My fajitas were excellent and perfectly cooked. But my husband’s skirt steak was mostly fat! The good news is that once the waiter determined that we had no time for a replacement, he credited our bill for the entire entree AND brought us a delicious dessert! Guacamole was delicious. Great waiter! We left happy and will definitely return. (They never should have cooked that steak!)
We had such a great time! We had two birthdays and our server was nice enough to bring us THREE CAKES on the restaurants tab. Very friendly and accommodating staff :). Only change would be to make the dinner plates slightly bigger since the food is so good!
Very nice! Food was very good & different!
Lovely atmosphere, chill waitstaff and generous portions.
Great spot on Grace St. Good value for food with a flair. Much better than the typical ho-hum Mexican restaurant. Server was prompt and friendly. Only problem was parking!! There was an event at the theater across the street and it was hard to find a spot to park. Will definitely be back, though!
We had an outstanding experience at Maya before going to the Gregory Porter show across the street. Maya had been on our local bucket list and it did not disapppoint. Great service, pleasing ambiance, a nice window seat, and wonderful food. We are looking forward to returning and are kicking ourselves for not supporting the Short Pump location when it was open.
Great food, even better margaritas! We will definitely be back!
Really enjoy this restaurant right before a theater show. Happy hour magaritas were the bomb!
It was great! Servers and food were amazing!
I love Maya's food, ambiance, and location! The only problem is on every visit service takes far to long, if I only have an hour for lunch I will not go. This past visit I Pre-ordered appetizers to help service along since I had a medium sized group, however it took 40 minutes from time of order until entrees were placed on table. I would visit much more often if service and kitchen prep time were improved.
We are new to RVA and have been working our way through the restaurant scene here and so far we love it. Some are better than others some are one and done, but we loved everything about Maya and will be back. Food was soooo good, and service was awesome. We just loved it.
Service attentive but not intrusive. Food presentation was spectacular....fun relaxed atmosphere
Everyone that works there is helpful, accommodating and pleasant. The food was great! I can't wait to come back again!
Friendly, patient waiter who did not rush us.
Food was OK, Guacamole trio very good, chips and salsa just Ok.
I used to love coming to Maya! Their food and labios caliente margarita have always been to die for. Something has changed. The margarita tasted plain... absolutely no kick to it! The waitress was great and tried to have it fixed. Still not like it used to be. I decided to go with the bourbon tacos and they were absolutely disgusting. Not like they used to be. I was extremely disappointed. Something is different about this place and it is sad. Hopefully it’s just a fluke.
Group of 8 and we could basically all hear each other. Food was delicious. Will return!
All I can say is...the nachos...and the salsa....and the agua Loca sangria. This place is phenomenal! You can get your fill easily off the apps and small plates!
The place is nice inside and service is good but food is uneven. The chips and salsa and margarita were terrific. The Farmers Taco was good but could have used more guacamole or sauce. The fish taco was excellent but very spicy. The octopus appetizer was expensive and not very good. Not cooked well. It was a decent meal but not as good as I expected.
My Wife and I went for lunch Sunday. There was a rain storm so it was pretty empty but we enjoyed it very much. Our server Joshua was extremely helpful as was the young lady he was training. The food was top notch and we eral lot has about a typical Mexican restaurant.
Fantastic fresh food and drinks. Service was terrific too!
I have never had a bad meal at Maya --- from the first sip of my margarita (on rocks, with salt) to the super fresh ceviche to a meal of tacos (usually camarone), everything is super tasty and fresh. The service is also very very good. Highly recommend it.
service was slow. long wait. otherwise it was excellent experience
