I sat at the bar, which i typically do when I am just stopping in for a drink, and the bartender was helpful with selecting drinks. No fret there. But my issue was when I got my receipt (after what i found out was an additional tip) i saw that they added an extra line item or “large party 20%” that was automatic gratuity. When i inquired with the hostess about this, she was also confused, because she remembered that I sat at the bar. Well apparently, regardless of your party size, they automatically add this line item to your bill (without your knowledge) if you sit at the bar. To me, that’s disingenuous business practices. Because if you’re allowing someone to pay their tab on your toast device where they can’t see all of their line items OR when people opt to sit at the bar, maybe that should be something that you lead with. The same way restaurants include that on their menus so that their patrons are aware of this before they tip (unknowingly) on top of what they weren’t even aware of. All that to say, if you sit at the bar, either ask for a paper receipt to look at your bill to see if they snuck in automatic gratuity or inquire if gratuity is included.

May Peel had some standout elements, but the vibe caught me off guard. It’s labeled as a speakeasy, so I expected a more mellow, intimate atmosphere — something you’d go to for relaxed conversation and a low-key night. Instead, it felt more like a sit-down club, with loud 2000s rap music dominating the space. Definitely not the quiet, tucked-away feel most speakeasies aim for. That said, the food and drinks were phenomenal. The bartenders clearly know what they’re doing — I had a smoked Old Fashioned (worth the $2 upcharge), and it was easily one of the best I’ve had. Every cocktail we tried was well-balanced and delicious. We also shared a charcuterie board and a meatball appetizer, both of which were excellent. Food and drinks? 10/10. Ambience? A bit off from what I expected — hence the 4/5 overall.

Maypeel was truly an amazing experience. He ada down one of the most memorable speakeasy’s I’ve attended. The music, drinks, and atmosphere was amazing and I’ll definitely be back!!!!

Celebrated a friend’s birthday and it was a great night. We had a party of 8 which is considered a large party (extra fees) but the service was great. Drinks were great. The Spanish meatballs and elevated tater tots were delicious. No complaints from our group. The ambiance is best for a date night but we still had a good time with friends.
