MAX's Wine Dive Austin - San Jacinto Blvd. Ratings and Reviews
Although the restaurant was not overly crowded, the service was very slow. 40 minutes after we ordered, we had to flag down our waitress to check on the status of our burger and salad. We were informed it was "almost ready". When it finally came about 10 minutes later, we were pleasantly surprised - the food was amazingly delicious and the portion sizes large. I wish we had been able to ask about dessert, but because of the delay we had to leave quickly after the main course to arrive on time for a theatre performance in Austin. If we return, we won't have made plans for anything afterwards.
Good location . Great food . Service was ok but disjointed and not personable . Was surprised at the wine prices and not as an extensive list as I was expecting for a restaurant with wine in the name . Also surprised at the limited selection of wine by glass . Most had to be bottle purchased .
Really great meal. We started with two appetizers that were done to perfection. What can I say about the fried chicken but it is to die for. Let’s not forget the wine selection, if you want to try a place that not only has a good selection by the bottle or the glass you have to try MAX’s. Our server Parker was super knowledgeable about the different wines and made some great suggestions
I may try this place again. Went for Sunday brunch. Food had good flavor BUT was cold when we got it. My eggs/chicken/biscuit were cold on top and mildly warm at the bottom. Grits were only warm deeper into the serving dish. Others had pancakes and they were hot. So, hard to give this one all thumbs up. Good local sourcing of food.
They put us at a table next to the door and it was freezing. I showed up 10 minutes before and they said they didn’t have my table and it wouldn’t be ready for a while. We finally demanded a table where we weren’t getting blasts of frozen air and half our order showed up 20 minutes later. Been there a lot over the years I will not be going back
We loved this place so much we visited twice in one weekend. The first visit was Friday night. Great wine options and I was thrilled with the Gluten Friendly choices. The Brussel Sprouts were amazing. Our second visit was for a glass of wine and cheese later on Sunday afternoon. And again, it did not disappoint.
We were at Max's mid-afternoon on a weekday. It was for a friend's birthday. The service was exemplary, as was the food. We started with the fried oysters. They were perfect! Then we had the fried chicken, which I believe is the best in Austin.
All around - just super!
This was my first visit to MWD . I used to work at the Hilton Downtown Austin and I would send guests here all the time and they'd return to thank me for the suggestion. After trying their signature fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and greens I'd definitely continue to recommend MAX's to hungry patrons. On my next visit I'm trying the Fried Egg Sandwich!
Came here for brunch with my husband. We heard that their chicken and waffles are great! We split a portion of Southern chicken and waffles (with collared greens and potatoes) and just added an additional piece of chicken which was plenty for us and it was soooo yummy!
Service was terrible. It took 3 hours for dinner.
We had made a reservation through Open Table and had confirmation. Hostess acted like she didn’t have anything. Made us feel uncomfortable and then sat us at a not so good table, where waited for almost 15 minutes to even acknowledge us
Won’t be returning
Was so disappointed. We have gone to Sunday brunch several times and loved it. This time the menu was changed the portions were smaller and the prices were higher. Instead of getting chicken and waffles we got 3 wings and a waffle for $18.75. And the Mimosas went up in price.
The food was great, but they have priced me out.
The waitress we had was fantastic.
So l guess if you don’t care about prices it a good place to go.
I suggested to a group of friends that we make a reservation at Max's after this years Texas Conference for Women. We arrived about 20 minutes early so we went to the bar for a drink while we waited for our table. Both my friend and I asked the bartender/waiter for 1) a glass of merlot 2) and a glass of California red (perhaps a cab). Although the waiter was nice he was busy and rushed and asked us no further questions and said "I have something for you". and went off. He came back with the wine and a bill for $41. He took it upon himself to select a $19 glass of merlot and a $20 glass of a Cal cab. I have been to MANY restaurants in Austin that are much nicer, more expensive, etc. (Vince Young Steakhouse for example) where when suggesting a wine (even by the glass) they give you ALL of the information. That does not take long and is better than slopping down and overpriced glass of wine to the customer. We did not drink the wine (over even sample... the bartender/waiter took off the second he set the glasses down) The hostess was gracious and did not require us to pay for the wine and we proceeded to meet the remainder of our party at our table for dinner. My friend and I wanted to order a different glass of wine when seated. (Something more in the $12 range per glass) and we tried to explain to our waitress. He condescending response was not appreciated. She said, and I quote..."You have to be specific." Gosh... I thought I was the customer? I certainly did not feel that way. I will say that the food was good. (steak caprese salad, fried chicken salad with champagne dressing, grilled cheese w/tomato soup and chips) That being said... good service is always paramount and our group did not get the type of service I have experienced in the past at Max's. I am not normally as harsh as this on reviews but I was that disappointed and I probably won't ever go back.
The restaurant was able to squeeze our large group in without much notice and as always, the menu did not fail and the drinks were excellent. I brought my friends from Canada and they were impressed. They didn't know what to do with fried chicken before noon but they tried it.
I was waited on twice the entire hour I waited for my food. The coffee cup had lipstick stains on it and the cups were not clean! I was extremely disappointed as I waited for over an hour to be helped and to receive my food. I decided to leave and tell the manager what happened and she gladly took care of our bill.
