About Max's Seafood Cafe

Max's Café was built in 1890 as a shoe store. In 1912, 34 North Burlington Street reopened as Leisinger's Saloon for the next 25 years even through prohibition (as a "soft drink establishment"). In 1937, Leisinger's Saloon passed through the family & was renamed Max's Cafe; it’s name for the next 65 years. In 1977, a new simply prepared fresh seafood menu transformed Max's Cafe into Max’s Seafood Café. The neighboring building was acquired to seat the growing number of patrons from both sides of the Delaware River, often forming lines around the corner, waiting to enjoy fresh flounder, shrimp, clams, & most of all, Steamed Mussels! Max's reputation grew for the next 22 years before age & neglect left it in a state of disrepair. The bar restaurant closed in July of 1998 & remained dormant for 2 ½ years. Refurbished in late 2000, Max's Seafood Cafe reopened on June 2, 2001 to continue its tradition of hospitality, impeccably fresh seafood, & most of all Steamed mussels.

Food is always good, and we really want to lover this place, but unfortunately our last experience wasn’t great. The food and menu is fine, but our service was terrible. Our waitress was not attentive, we had to ask multiple times for bread, and we would have ordered more drinks but the service was that poor

I had a date night with my girlfriend and it was her first time there. She loved the ambiance of the restaurant with the brick and the dark wood. We ordered two drinks and they were made by Sherry, who was our waitress. They were delicious. So good, we had two with our meal. Then the meal came and it tasted as good as it looked. I got the wood plank salmon and we were raving about it. We also got the longhots and mussels diablo....both fantastic. Afterwards, we finished off the meal with a creme brûlée which was also delicious. We then made our way out to the bar for a few more drinks. We have been talking about our great night to everyone. Also, Sherry told us about the steak place down the street called Chubby’s. We’re gonna try that next. Thanks for a fantastic night out!!!

Great food nice ambiance. Only problem was finding the place but more my fault, don't know the area that well. Service was excellent and the beer was cold.

Max's Seafood has turned into our "go to" place! We have eaten at Max's on several occasions and have never been disappointed. The food is delicious, servers are very attentive and the ambiance is very comfortable. I recommend Max's every chance I get!

Our server was excellent very attentive, efficient patient and very (forgive me) attractive I must say. He brought us everything we asked for and more. My bad, I forgot his name but the face I’ll remember forever.

Food: oysters very good liked the pacific oysters the best, liked the that compound butter was used instead of plain loved the apple pecan kale salad. The bowl of veggies was tasty and impressive and imaginative. The Crab Cakes were delicious and sweet, they were a bit small, they were not heavily seasoned, just enough very little binder or filler however I was looking for more lump crab meat along with the backfin white flake meat. In summary dinner was very good. My dining companion had Oysters stew he which he loved. He ordered Several
More oysters and clams and linguini, he remarked that the clams And linguini could use a bit more flavor. That’s ok as sometimes every establishment has an off night.
All in all food is fresh, very good is worth every penny.

I love the intimate rustic maritime ambience, noise level was minimal despite the fact my dining companion and I were the only ones there it was a Wednesday after all. Some things we requested they did not have that’s ok.

Prices are reasonable. I will dine there again. Give Max your patronage and support and Keep this local business thriving by dining there soon. Thank you.

The food was not desirable and not prepared to my liking. Had to send my entree back and the second dish was as worse as the initial one. I think drinks and bar food is the way to go for this restaurant.

We went for lunch and found a varied menu that offered some interesting items that were unique. My friend had the grouper reuben and I had the fried oyster sliders. Both came with either a salad or fries and both selections were very good. Loved the neighborhood bar feel of the place. Service was friendly, prompt and thorough. It's a perfect lunch spot.

I remember Max’s from years past . It was a great restaurant with outstanding food, esp the seafood. However, our last experience was a disappointment. We will try again soon. Hopefully you had a bad night, not to be repeated.

My husband and I have been to Max's Seafood several times. It was a while since we were there as we had a bad experience and thought we would give them another chance. While the food is good; the service still hasn't gotten any better.

only good things about our experience.. our waitress was fantastic and the drinks were delicious!
The food has definately gone down hill since last time we were there.
Stuffed shrimp was extremely fishy, and the crab cakes were nasty! Our waitress was very apologetic and offered to bring me something else, so i went with chicken parm.. thinking It's got to be better than the seafood..WRONG! It's a shame because they used to have great food... my recommendation, find a new chef!

I have been to Max's several times before, and the food and the service have always been exquisite. I recently went to Max's on a Friday evening and the food was terrible. The special, which was a catfish, was obviously frozen fish filets, the bread that was brought to our table was cold and stale, the service was inadequate at best. Not sure if there was a management change, but bring back the old Max's. This was my favorite seafood place in Southern NJ, and I am not sure at this point that I would go back. Very disappointed because this was an A+ restaurant prior to this experience. At best, from this past dining experience, I would give it a C-. What happened???

We are always very pleased with the dining experience at Max's. We don't go as often as we should since it's a little out of the way for us. This was a 2fer deal through the Camden County
eats program so we couldn't resist.

Small, well kept bar/restaurant. Food was good, friendly staff and clean tables.

Moderate cost for this type of restaurant. The location is not the best. I have visited a couple times. I would recommend for the food and service.

Food was overall very good but the octopus appetizer was probably the best octopus I have ever eaten. Next time I go back I may be making a meal of the octopus alone.

First visit to this gem! Old fashioned saloon with beautiful woodwork and stamped tin ceiling. Good is fabulous! Thai mussels were great for bread dipping and grilled octopus nicely done over a potato olive and tomato ragu. Recipes were a different from the standard fare and all were delicious. Service was very good although the place was not busy on the Tuesday night when we were there.

Although the service was excellent and the restaurant itself was very pretty, we were a bit disappointed with the food. The grilled octopus appetizer was good but had too many very salty olives that overpowered the dish. My husband really enjoyed the stuffed long hots appetizer. My shrimp entree was very overcooked, leaving the shrimp very tough. My husband said his cedar-plank salmon was tasty but the accompanying sweet potato was sorely undercooked. We feel that the drinks were very over-priced. On the plus side, their homemade key lime pie was delicious. Again, our server was very good. I doubt that we will return.

It made me check of how many stars, but we didn't eat here. We pushed our reservation back , and then tried again because we were running quite late. It turns out the restaurant closed at 9, but the hours on Open Table listed as 10, so we weren't able to go. No big deal, and it was our fault, but I just wanted you to know so you could update. We will try again to go, as we really wanted to go here.

I found the service and food was great, my grandmother would tell me that Max's had the best crab cakes she ever had. Well, I had the Clam Casino and Crab Cakes and would have to say " Yes grandmother that was the best I have had in 40 years" if you never had Clam Casino you need to try Max's, they make the real thing!!
I have already put the word out to my friends they need to give Max's a shot for a great seafood meal or just for the crab cakes and Clam Casino!!! Thank you Tom for the gift card, it's worth every dollar!! And yes we will be back before the summers over, no need to go to the shore to have a great seafood meal!

Great service. Key Lime pie was outstanding. Seating better in front room. Too dark for me in the back room. Good color presentation with salmon, which was crusted with pecans lightly versus drowning in them. Parking lot available. Accepts Ipen Table dining rewards.
