I found the service and food was great, my grandmother would tell me that Max's had the best crab cakes she ever had. Well, I had the Clam Casino and Crab Cakes and would have to say " Yes grandmother that was the best I have had in 40 years" if you never had Clam Casino you need to try Max's, they make the real thing!!
I have already put the word out to my friends they need to give Max's a shot for a great seafood meal or just for the crab cakes and Clam Casino!!! Thank you Tom for the gift card, it's worth every dollar!! And yes we will be back before the summers over, no need to go to the shore to have a great seafood meal!

Great service. Key Lime pie was outstanding. Seating better in front room. Too dark for me in the back room. Good color presentation with salmon, which was crusted with pecans lightly versus drowning in them. Parking lot available. Accepts Ipen Table dining rewards.
Food was great. Service from Brittany was really great. Kitchen was very slow in getting entrees out but Brittany apologized for it- she was on top of it. We were in no rush so not a big deal.
consistency is a key element of a restaurant that you enjoy going back to, not just for that special occasion but just because. Max's delivers on all elements, food, and selection of course, but also as a nice comfortable place to eat. The staff are professional and friendly and work hard to ensure your visit is a good experience. Drinks are well made and generous, bar staff attentive and good at what they do. The food has been, in our numerous visits consistently excellent, creative and fresh. All in all a place you are always comfortable visiting.
At the last minute on Father's Day, the wife and I had a hankering for good seafood and were able to make reservations at Max's Seafood in Gloucester City. We were given our choice of seating by the hostess, and greeted shortly by our waitress. We ordered drinks and also the Grilled Octopus Salad, which was very, very good - great grilled taste! This was followed by two cups of Shrimp Bisque, which arrived cold and unappetizing, so we sent the soup back to be reheated. This is where things get interesting. It took 20 minutes to get our soup back (which did come back steaming), and when finished the soup, then spent almost another 25 minutes waiting for our entrees. Both were very good, but we got the impression that after we sent back the soup that someone (the kitchen, server?) was not happy with us. Several tables that arrived after us had already been served, paid their bill and left. We will probably return, but will be looking for more professional service.
great food and menu. loved the crabcakes and braised ribs. Can not run out of calamari however.
Everything was delicious. The Thai mussels are fantastic. The beer selection and wine choices are nice as well. Will be back.
The perfect venue for Father's Day. Everything was absolutely wonderful between the food, the service and the ambiance. We are a little concerned however because we are telling so many people about our wonderful experience at Max's that we might not be able to get a table the next time we want to visit.
Went here for the first time after being highly recommended. The service and food were both very good. I tried the monk fish and stuffed salmon. Both were good, not great. But, the expectations going here were very high, so maybe I'm being too picky.
Great atmosphere and vibe inside, which you wouldn't expect entirely by driving through the surrounding neighborhood in Gloucester City.
The bar was empty on the Friday night we went, but it looks like a great spot to grab a few beers for happy hour.
We will definitely be back.
I will definitely be returning. Staff was very nice. Our waiter was excellent. Good appetizers and food was delicious.
Interesting find in the middle of a neighborhood. Food was very good. Good short ribs, monkfish and shrimp, and scallops. Service was good and location had some nice historical charm.
Absolutely amazing. We will be going back soon for sure!
Our latest visit was on a quiet Tuesday evening. Excellent service. The food was delicious and nicely presented. I especially recommend the Thai mussels appetizer.
Great food and atmosphere - a hidden gem
Went on a Monday night so it was not crowded so we had a nice, quiet dinner. Monk fish and shrimp was excellent. Server was very nice and attentive. Allagash beer on tap was a plus. Think a house salad should be included for the entrée prices but it is not.
mothers day dinner was fantastic
Great food, wonderful experience!!
The food was good but they were"out" of several items. Only 1 vegetable to choose. We had a 4:00 PM reservation. Hard to believe they were out of things that early on Mothers Day
This was our first time dining at Max's. We will definitely be back! Everything we ordered came out perfectly cooked and seasoned! The only disappointment was that they were out of the crème Brule!
I loved it... will be going back often. The food was incredible! Beautifully presented.
We always love dining at Max
Cozy atmosphere and excellent service. Good food and a nice wine list. Felt it was too expensive.
The seared scallops and Thai mussels were very good.
Max's Seafood Café never leaves us unsatisfied or disappointed! The place serves the most wonderful seafood dishes and offers attentive service. We visited on Thursday night for an early Mother's Day celebration, and my 92 year old mother is still telling everyone about her delicious bouillabaisse! We had a marvelous time and will be back soon.
This was our third time at Max's and each time - full satisfaction. After our first visit we brought out friends and now they love it too. Simply the food is good, the presentation nice, décor comforting retro and the service pleasant and efficient.
The mussels were delicious and the Pan seared scallops fantastic I finished with the key lime pie the best I've ever tasted
We always enjoy Max's. The scallop special and the cedar plank salmon were incredible. The drinks were great. Our server Jack was very good. We'll definitely be back again and again.
Plus we really enjoy Chubby's II which is just around the corner and under the same management team.
Don't let the Gloucester location concern you...it's worth the drive
We were looking for a good seafood restaurant and found it at Max's great meal and Sarah was wonderful. Can't wait to go back!
Great atmosphere and food very good. Great for a special occasion.
Restautant was very nice. The food was excellent and the service was also very good.it was a very relaxing evening with good food and good friends . Would go there again. They have good selection on sea food. I had mussels in a white wine sauce it was very good
Max's is a unique neighborhood gem in the heart of Gloucester City with a parking lot across the street that makes it easy! Historic building with an antique bar serving good wine. Seafood is the specialty and the food is very good. Exceptional service by AJ and his helpers!
Maxs used to be fabulous, recommend to everyone, food has become average
The waitress Sarah, was great. I like to have Sarah on my next return
We made reservations to treat friends to a great seafood restaurant, known for freshness and outstanding mussels. Great selection of fresh, raw oysters. Plus martinis were perfect. Nice ambienance for a neighborhood bar / restaurant. Prices were reasonable, a great value for the service and food. Our friends were impressed and we will be repeat customers for sure.
Great band- nothing beats live music. Phenomenal service by our server Sarah (i think) and great recommendations and great conversation. Food was outstanding- we ordered seafood and the chicken parm. We even got a personal meeting with the chef afterwards which was extra special! Great environment, must go!
Max's is a beautifully renovated historic location with stunning wood work. I enjoyed Thai mussels and Seafood Fra Diablo. The medium heat was perfect for me and my husband had the same entree and hot suited him well. His octopus appetizer was fabulous with tasty olives, tomatoes and onions with the octopus. The service was friendly and attentive. My only complaint was the weather turned so our walk along the Delaware River (3 blocks from Max's) was delayed until our next visit.
My wife and I went for South Jersey Restaurant Week and we were both very impressed with the food and very friendly and attentive service. Love the old city charm of the building and decor, quite a neighborhood gem. Highly recommended.
Food was great for dinner. They really did a good job overhalling the place. I haven't been there since I was a kid. My wife and I thought it was excellent and are looking forward to going back. The only thing I can make a negative comment on is the initial greeting. We had to enter through the bar and we had multiple staff walk by us and jot greet us nor when in the way did they say excuse me when walking by. Once we were seated, the service was great.
I have always loved this place! I am hoping the Stuffed Shrimp I had was an anomaly. The stuffing was 98% breading. Bartender A +, Server A+, Atmosphere is wonderful.
Have been to Max's quite a few times this month and have never been disappointed! Food is excellent, love the menu choices.
