About Max's Seafood Cafe
Max's Café was built in 1890 as a shoe store. In 1912, 34 North Burlington Street reopened as Leisinger's Saloon for the next 25 years even through prohibition (as a "soft drink establishment"). In 1937, Leisinger's Saloon passed through the family & was renamed Max's Cafe; it’s name for the next 65 years. In 1977, a new simply prepared fresh seafood menu transformed Max's Cafe into Max’s Seafood Café. The neighboring building was acquired to seat the growing number of patrons from both sides of the Delaware River, often forming lines around the corner, waiting to enjoy fresh flounder, shrimp, clams, & most of all, Steamed Mussels! Max's reputation grew for the next 22 years before age & neglect left it in a state of disrepair. The bar restaurant closed in July of 1998 & remained dormant for 2 ½ years. Refurbished in late 2000, Max's Seafood Cafe reopened on June 2, 2001 to continue its tradition of hospitality, impeccably fresh seafood, & most of all Steamed mussels.

Max's Seafood Cafe Ratings and Reviews
I found the service and food was great, my grandmother would tell me that Max's had the best crab cakes she ever had. Well, I had the Clam Casino and Crab Cakes and would have to say " Yes grandmother that was the best I have had in 40 years" if you never had Clam Casino you need to try Max's, they make the real thing!!
I have already put the word out to my friends they need to give Max's a shot for a great seafood meal or just for the crab cakes and Clam Casino!!! Thank you Tom for the gift card, it's worth every dollar!! And yes we will be back before the summers over, no need to go to the shore to have a great seafood meal!

Great service. Key Lime pie was outstanding. Seating better in front room. Too dark for me in the back room. Good color presentation with salmon, which was crusted with pecans lightly versus drowning in them. Parking lot available. Accepts Ipen Table dining rewards.
consistency is a key element of a restaurant that you enjoy going back to, not just for that special occasion but just because. Max's delivers on all elements, food, and selection of course, but also as a nice comfortable place to eat. The staff are professional and friendly and work hard to ensure your visit is a good experience. Drinks are well made and generous, bar staff attentive and good at what they do. The food has been, in our numerous visits consistently excellent, creative and fresh. All in all a place you are always comfortable visiting.
At the last minute on Father's Day, the wife and I had a hankering for good seafood and were able to make reservations at Max's Seafood in Gloucester City. We were given our choice of seating by the hostess, and greeted shortly by our waitress. We ordered drinks and also the Grilled Octopus Salad, which was very, very good - great grilled taste! This was followed by two cups of Shrimp Bisque, which arrived cold and unappetizing, so we sent the soup back to be reheated. This is where things get interesting. It took 20 minutes to get our soup back (which did come back steaming), and when finished the soup, then spent almost another 25 minutes waiting for our entrees. Both were very good, but we got the impression that after we sent back the soup that someone (the kitchen, server?) was not happy with us. Several tables that arrived after us had already been served, paid their bill and left. We will probably return, but will be looking for more professional service.
The perfect venue for Father's Day. Everything was absolutely wonderful between the food, the service and the ambiance. We are a little concerned however because we are telling so many people about our wonderful experience at Max's that we might not be able to get a table the next time we want to visit.
Went here for the first time after being highly recommended. The service and food were both very good. I tried the monk fish and stuffed salmon. Both were good, not great. But, the expectations going here were very high, so maybe I'm being too picky.
Great atmosphere and vibe inside, which you wouldn't expect entirely by driving through the surrounding neighborhood in Gloucester City.
The bar was empty on the Friday night we went, but it looks like a great spot to grab a few beers for happy hour.
We will definitely be back.
Went on a Monday night so it was not crowded so we had a nice, quiet dinner. Monk fish and shrimp was excellent. Server was very nice and attentive. Allagash beer on tap was a plus. Think a house salad should be included for the entrée prices but it is not.
Max's Seafood Café never leaves us unsatisfied or disappointed! The place serves the most wonderful seafood dishes and offers attentive service. We visited on Thursday night for an early Mother's Day celebration, and my 92 year old mother is still telling everyone about her delicious bouillabaisse! We had a marvelous time and will be back soon.
We always enjoy Max's. The scallop special and the cedar plank salmon were incredible. The drinks were great. Our server Jack was very good. We'll definitely be back again and again.
Plus we really enjoy Chubby's II which is just around the corner and under the same management team.
Don't let the Gloucester location concern you...it's worth the drive
Restautant was very nice. The food was excellent and the service was also very good.it was a very relaxing evening with good food and good friends . Would go there again. They have good selection on sea food. I had mussels in a white wine sauce it was very good
Max's is a unique neighborhood gem in the heart of Gloucester City with a parking lot across the street that makes it easy! Historic building with an antique bar serving good wine. Seafood is the specialty and the food is very good. Exceptional service by AJ and his helpers!
We made reservations to treat friends to a great seafood restaurant, known for freshness and outstanding mussels. Great selection of fresh, raw oysters. Plus martinis were perfect. Nice ambienance for a neighborhood bar / restaurant. Prices were reasonable, a great value for the service and food. Our friends were impressed and we will be repeat customers for sure.
