Max's Opera Cafe Ratings and Reviews
I made our reservation at Max's because it was the only place available close enough to the Herbst theater for our 7pm show. My usual go-to spots were booked. What a pleasant surprise to have such an excellent meal and service on top of being just a block away from the show!
So many of the menu items have peas in them, it's strange. My chicken was cooked to the point of being dusty dry. Our waiter was grumpy and rude. They had a piano player which was nice, but then they added a guy belting out old tunes which made conversation difficult. Not a place I would return to for dinner.
I went with my almost 13-year-old friend for dinner before a performance of nutcracker. My friend loved the grilled cheese sandwich on the kids menu. I like the wide variety of food on Max’s menu. Salads are consistently good. Portions are huge. Our waitress was very attentive and made sure we were done in time to get to the show.
Great food. We had 12:30rsesrvation before the Nutcracker. It was packed, no shock there. When I checked in for reservation hostess said 30min to hour wait. I reminded her of reservation and her look was amazing! Combine “SO What, you gotta be kidding me, get out of my face, and get a life”into one derisive glance and you have a clue. I am persistent, and we were seated about 1:00. I had a Reuben, OMG. A BLT came on dry bread, but mayo was requested. The kids menu hamburger was huge, fries delicious.
If you are pre-show, be aware that reservations are meaningless, so arrive early and enjoy your deli meal
We were looking for a after theatre place we could eat with an energetic 12-year old, and we found it. Max's has a great menu for kids -- something for everyone, really. And I have always loved their pastrami ruben sandwiches. We arrived early, but they couldn't seat us until our reservation time. (That's understandable.) They were really busy -- and noisy -- because they were full of families that had just come from seeing The Nutcracker. Because of that, service was slow. But all-in-all, it was a successful outing and we all enjoyed our meals.
I took my 6 year old daughter here for lunch before seeing SF Ballet's The Nutcracker. We had reservations for noon and sat down immediately. They were pretty busy and the service was a bit slow, so we didn't finish until 1:30pm. The ballet started at 2pm so that was totally ok, but had we come at 12:30pm I'd have ended up being a bit stressed about the time. The food was really good, the menu options more diverse than I had anticipated, there was a nice wine to go with my entree, the kid menu was good, and overall we both had a really nice lunch. It worked great for a pre-ballet lunch with my daughter -- casual and kid friendly enough to be comfortable with her but fancy enough to give lunch the "special outing" feel. Thank you Max's!
We had a 5:30 reservation prior to the ballet. There was a long line when we arrived at 5:25. We were told to wait in along line of other people with reservations. After waiting for 20 minutes, we decided to leave to find another restaurant in order to eat before the ballet. Max’s has been in this location for a long time, it’s surprising that they don’t know how to manage the pre-theater crowd. What a letdown. We had a 5:30 reservation prior to the ballet. Max's Opera Cafe is a pathetic excuse of a restaurant. We had a reservation for 5:30pm on a Saturday night in Dec 2017 and could not be sat because of a back log of reservations still waiting to be sat. Reservation 30-45 minutes before us were still waiting for a table. You cannot count on them to honor reservations so never book, but especially not if you are planning to attend the opera, theatre, ballet, or any other scheduled show afterwards. We ended up going to Home Alone at the Symphony hungry.
The restaurant did not honor our reservation nor that of at least 10 other groups with reservations trying to dine that night before the Nutcracker. It was pandemonium and we left when we had been there for about 20 minutes and large groups with reservations at least a half hour earlier than ours were still not seated. Very discouraging when you have small children who need to eat before a performance and this restaurant which had our reservation for several months overbooked itself massively.
I made a reservation. Got there and there was a huge line to the host. I went up and asked if people with reservations had to wait too. They said yes. First thought I had was "what is the point of a reservation" Apparently everyone in line also had a reservation. They tell you they will give your table away if you are not there within 15 minutes of your reservation, but if I'm stuck in line...then how will they know. I waited with my group for 10-15 minutes in line then left to eat somewhere before our show. I have been to Max's in palo alto and the food, atmosphere and everything else was great. This was just bad this time in SF though. Sorry guys, but if I make a reservation I expect to be seated on time.
They didn’t really honor the reservation. People waiting in line just to check in for their reservation, hostess was nowhere to be found, and several families told us they hadn’t been seated even well after their time...the worst one was 40 minutes overdue. We had to leave, rather than missing our show.
We were attending a holiday concert at the symphony with the entire family and Max's was the perfect place for all of us. The food was delicious, the cocktails creative, and the ambiance welcoming. We appreciated the service on such a crowded Friday night and we will be back!! Thank you Max's Opera Café for giving us a memorable evening in San Francisco.
We have been to Max's many times over the years but weredisappointed this time. Not only was it very noisy, the service was rushed, and the food was cold. I had to send back the "crispy" onion strings that came with the beef sliders because they actually were soggy and cold. They did quickly replace them with hot crispy ones, though, so that was good. Not sure we will continue to go there.
Excellent service and great food. Needed to get in and out fairly quickly for the Opera and the hostess and waiter did an excellent job to keep things moving but didn't feel rushed even with the large crowd. I had the Ruben which was tasty with lots of meat. Very good overall.
A Holiday tradition ... friends gather at Max's for dinner then San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus concert. Menu has something for everyone AND the fact hat a reservation can be made, makes it the perfect spot to meet up. A tad TOO loud for casual catch up conversation.... but that's the restaurant's vibe. Not much you can do about that!
