We arrived early and were greeted pleasantly and seated at the type of table we wanted. Everything else was fine. No complaints. Would return any time.

Service was poor . Waitress didn't really know what she was doing. The drinks were wrong. The wine was warm. it was expensive with an automatic gratuity of 18% for poor service .

There are lots of menu choices to please different eaters, portions are large, the prices are inexpensive. Sort of Jewish deli. And they make a good martini.

Fun place. It does get a little loud but we were there after 8 pm on a Friday. The place seemed to almost clear out after 8:30. Food was good, ambience perfect for a group while not being too expensive for everyone.

The piano player and singers were so loud that it was hard to have a conversation. I’d probably rate 4 stars instead of 3, without that.

Too noisy; piano/singer should be deleted. Chosen for pre-symphony dinner. Parking impossible. Noise level made conversation impossible. Water supplied with straw without asking; means trouble in the future. Portions too large; food wasted.

The Russian cabbage soup and Bistro salad combo was excellent. Service was outstanding. Our reservation was for 12:15 PM; we were seated immediately. Our server was attentive and hard-working. We had plenty of time to get to the Ballet.

Our waitress was wonderful. The place was very crowded so food took a while to come. We told our waitress that we had to get to the theater, and she came through with flying colors.

Love the Matzo Ball Soup and Grandma's Honey chicken. It was really busy and the service was a bit off, however, our waiter was singing (amazingly) in between waiting on us. Had a really good time and tasty food.

Overall, Max's was better than usual. The SF Ballet crowd wasn't as large as usual, so the restaurant wasn't swampled. I use to go to Max's all the time before the ballet and stopped because the service and food degraded if the restaurant got crowded. This time I went early, 6 p.m., and the experience was pleasant.

We come from Seattle every year to support the "God Bless the USA" Fundraiser for Vet at the Herbst War Memorial. This year we had 14 & we thoroughly enjoyed the performance & dinner after at Max's Opera Cafe! Lovely that they accommodated our large group - the food was delicious, warm rolls, special prime rib w/ all the fixins, large fresh salads, fresh salmon & great menu selections & the help/service was great too! Especially enjoyed the singing & piano playing - will come again , won't wait till next year!

I made our reservation at Max's because it was the only place available close enough to the Herbst theater for our 7pm show. My usual go-to spots were booked. What a pleasant surprise to have such an excellent meal and service on top of being just a block away from the show!

I came here before going to see a show at the War Memorial Opera House. The food was all right. The crowd was older, average age was probably around 49-60. Our waitress was super nice and had a great singing voice.

So many of the menu items have peas in them, it's strange. My chicken was cooked to the point of being dusty dry. Our waiter was grumpy and rude. They had a piano player which was nice, but then they added a guy belting out old tunes which made conversation difficult. Not a place I would return to for dinner.

I went with my almost 13-year-old friend for dinner before a performance of nutcracker. My friend loved the grilled cheese sandwich on the kids menu. I like the wide variety of food on Max’s menu. Salads are consistently good. Portions are huge. Our waitress was very attentive and made sure we were done in time to get to the show.

Great food. We had 12:30rsesrvation before the Nutcracker. It was packed, no shock there. When I checked in for reservation hostess said 30min to hour wait. I reminded her of reservation and her look was amazing! Combine “SO What, you gotta be kidding me, get out of my face, and get a life”into one derisive glance and you have a clue. I am persistent, and we were seated about 1:00. I had a Reuben, OMG. A BLT came on dry bread, but mayo was requested. The kids menu hamburger was huge, fries delicious.
If you are pre-show, be aware that reservations are meaningless, so arrive early and enjoy your deli meal

We were looking for a after theatre place we could eat with an energetic 12-year old, and we found it. Max's has a great menu for kids -- something for everyone, really. And I have always loved their pastrami ruben sandwiches. We arrived early, but they couldn't seat us until our reservation time. (That's understandable.) They were really busy -- and noisy -- because they were full of families that had just come from seeing The Nutcracker. Because of that, service was slow. But all-in-all, it was a successful outing and we all enjoyed our meals.

I took my 6 year old daughter here for lunch before seeing SF Ballet's The Nutcracker. We had reservations for noon and sat down immediately. They were pretty busy and the service was a bit slow, so we didn't finish until 1:30pm. The ballet started at 2pm so that was totally ok, but had we come at 12:30pm I'd have ended up being a bit stressed about the time. The food was really good, the menu options more diverse than I had anticipated, there was a nice wine to go with my entree, the kid menu was good, and overall we both had a really nice lunch. It worked great for a pre-ballet lunch with my daughter -- casual and kid friendly enough to be comfortable with her but fancy enough to give lunch the "special outing" feel. Thank you Max's!
