We were seated promptly, and the food was good and all delivered at the same time.

For many years my friend and I have been having lunch at Max’s before attending the SF Ballet matinee . The food is always good but this time the service was somewhat unpleasant. Our red headed server never smiled. Don’t know if she was having a bad day but she appeared to be upset about something. Her attitude made us uncomfortable.

Always delicious and excellent entertainment and opera singing by the waiter Brian!

Disappointing. Crowded. Noisy. Piano player pounding out show tunes (ugh).

I thought I'd try their "genuine Jewish Passover menu". Uninspired. Terrible flourless chocolate cake.

Short staffed? My waiter was pretty distracted.

My second review; for the first time I ordered something other than pastrami. Passover special brisket was just terrific. Wife's matzoh-ball chicken soup, and calamari starter ditto. The piano is great, either sitting nearby or down by the windows. This is almost the closest restaurant to the opera house.

This is a great place to meet w/ friends and have a nice casual meal before the opera or symphony. We met here for brunch prior to a matinee show. They are very good about confirming reservations, we were seated promptly at a nice roomy table, and service was prompt. Great variety and selection to accommodate all tastes. Not a gourmet spot, but decent food and price for a SF restaurant.

Food is good.. service was a little slow!
Had to ask for the Rolls, but finally got them.
2 People out of 4 had the Fish Tacos, and
honestly, they were the best I have had outside of a Taqueria,
even might have been better than that.

Cabbage Soup is always good.
Miss the Chopped Liver Sand, but over all the Food was very good.

2 People had the Pinot Noir, which was good.

Max bills himself as a Jewish Deli though most of the menu seems to be regular comfort food. Still, a pastrami sandwich and a reuben were both pretty good by local standards. The bright, glass and metal interior is attractive, the dinnertime piano player is excellent at least for people of an age, and the service is good. A very good alternative for the pre opera, ballet and concert crowd at a lower price than a lot of Hayes Valley.

The host was not friendly at all. He gave no response when I said we had a reservation. The server was very nice and efficient. I had the pot pie. It was not very good for a $20 pot pie. It was probably the worst I’ve ever had. We also shared some wings which were good, and a banana split with a lot of goo but short on banana. My companion had a Reuben sandwich. That’s always good there

My wife and I were staying at a timeshare nearby and we ate dinner here twice during our week visit in the area. The restaurant fits well with a fine or casual dining atmosphere and you can dine here in casual dress without feeling unwelcome. They have an extensive menu with a variety of prices. The live piano music and occasional singing was also nice however, the overall restaurant noise level can get a little loud at times.

We had a reservation but we were seated in a less than desirable location. We were granted a change to a better seating location but the person in charge seemed less than pleased with our request. Our food was adequate but not as good as we remembered. We have dined at Max's many times and this experience was not one of our better ones. We will not be returning in the near future.

The pastrami was mediocre, the desert ordered from the menu was no longer available at 6 pm, the waitress had to cover too many tables to provide prompt service, and the recorded music was too loud. Perhaps just a bad night to come on Sunday evening.

Good comfort food. Convenient to the Opera House for a Saturday night ballet performance. Good value...huge portions. Had enough to take home for dinner the next night. Could share an entree next time.

The layout of the restaurant fosters chaos...diners coming and going in same space as wait staff. Reception desk personnel left my friend standing by a door for 15 minutes whenn i was already seated, but could not see her. Two other ladies were brought to my table as my dinner companion and left.

The food, however, was good and the restaurant is close to concert venues. Two other moderate restaurants in the area are closed and i guess their clientele spilled over to Max's.
Extremely noisy and a female singer (or screecher) added just that note of hysteria needed to make one want to leave without eating.

We were disappointed in the service from our wait person. A glass of wine was spilled, no apologies, towels to clean up and a new glass brought. BUT no offer to help with dry cleaning, a complimentary glass of wine, etc. The wait person avoided contact with us for the rest of the meal. We understand the embarrassment but expect more at Max's.
When the front of the house person was contacted as we were leaving, he shrugged it off barely acknowledging the event and again no offer of dry cleaning or a real apology--rather half hearted.
This is unfortunate because we find Max's a great pre-play and pre-Symphony venue (season ticket holders for SHN and the Symphony) for brunch and dinner. And have been patrons for over 25 years.

I hope this does not happen in the future.

Food was descent and service was good. The best part of the evening for my husband and myself was the live music. The piano player/singer played some great classical jazz and sang
for some of the songs.

All four of us ordered different items and everyone really liked what they ordered. The other couple ordered Caesar Salad and meatloaf (husband). His wife had Fish and Chips. My wife had Paella and had more than enough left over for the next days lunch. I had a small Matzo Ball soup and a chicken pot pie.

Would go back anytime

Gets you to the Opera House on time for an 8 pm curtain if you have a 6 or 6:15 reservation. It is very busy. Our waiter was very attentive despite being stretched thin. The menu has shrunk. No more chopped chicken liver or beet soup. The table was covered in not very clean plastic. We arrived 10 min early for our reservation at 6:15 so we had to wait. Really? So ok but not wonderful. I still so miss California pizza kitchen that used to be across the street.
