Delicious food---grilled salmon salad very generous with salmon, an absolutely gigantic chicken pot pie, excellent French dip, and good fish tacos (although maybe too much cole slaw on them). Service also very good.
Very nice place for large group meal. Good food. Excellent desserts.
It’s been a long time since we went to Max’s Palo Alto. Nothing unusual here, sandwiches ordered were fine . They certainly weren’t over filled, but had expected more meat (piled high) .
Service was ok ,but they left the table and seats wet when wiping off and declined to dry them.
Not happy with the 3% extra service charge.
I chose Max's because you can find parking and get a reservation on a Friday night, and the menu offers something for everyone. It all worked as planned. Food was good, cocktails tasty, and we all had a good time. I would come back. I recommend it to you.
The place was dirty and disorganized. Our server took a long time to take our order then the food took more than 30 minutes to deliver. We only had soup/sandwich combo and fish and chips. My sandwich was completely dry with only turkey, lettuce and tomato on it. The server never offered any condiments. We kept looking for him to get some mayo and he was nowhere to be found. I waved at another server who sarcastically waved back at me. Finally, our server arrived and I asked him why there was no mayo on the sandwich. He said thats the way they are served. I had get up and find some mayo and mustard at a wait station for my sandwich. I will not be returning.
Hadn’t been here in years and was surprised that it was still there in a time when Palo Alto has seen stalwarts replaced with tecchie hipster places (a la Town and Country). The server was very friendly and attentive, but had no clue about how to handle food allergies. I told him very clearly that I had a gluten allergy and that no bread or gluten could touch my food. He brought out my veggie scramble with a scone sitting on top and still didn’t understand what the problem was. Suggest management train better. The restaurant is also looking a bit old and run-down. The food was decent, but the menu is old school and everything is way overpriced. I think Max’s time has passed and would like to see them completely revamp the space and menu.
The food is good but the server is not that good. Lack of customer service and too slow.
Always a fun place to get together with family and friends
It was perfect for the occasion, haven't seen friends for 5 years.
When we were there for lunch with a friend recently, the service was atrocious. Our waiter had a terrible attitude, was unwilling to explain things on the menu, and didn't bother to ascertain our order over the restaurant noise. He forgot to to get us the bread and butter that we asked for, as well as the sugar for the coffee. He then moved away and never checked back. No tea or coffee refills. We had to get hold of other waiters to get what we needed. He was curt, impatient, borderline hostile! In addition, the food was just so-so. While we expected Stanford Shopping Center eateries to be on the pricey side, we also expected better quality. This place is a disappointment. Apart from the convenient location and warm decor, not a pleasant dining experience at all.
Enjoyed the young lady playing the piano and singing during dinner.
Visited for hours
Very accommodating, wonderful food and nice outdoor seating option!
when you sit inside, the service is decent. we sat outside and the service was horrible. it was more than 20 minutes and after asking for a waiter before anybody showed up even for drink orders. that's so bad
Good place to go with kids. Don't bother ordering a cocktail. They have such a large selection of alcohol because they virtually no alcohol makes it into the drinks. Food was good with good sized portions (my husband and I were able to share the Chicken Pot Pie and there was still some left over), though their eclairs continue to be dry no matter how many times I order one and hope for something different. The cream inside is very good. This is the a place to go to if you have a group and everyone wants something different. But don't really choose if you are a big foodie. Dishes are pretty run of the mill.
My lifelong friend and I get together twice a year to celebrate our friendship/birthdays. Stanford Shopping Center and Max's is half way between my home in Sunnyvale and hers in Belmont. We were able to enjoy lunch at a leisurely pace and spend time catching up on each other's lives without being rushed.
A wonderful place to bring friends. The service is very good, with the waiters covering for each other very
Live music was too loud for dinning area. Food was too sweet (Grandmas Chicken) cloyingly so. We were at table for dinner for 15 min. Before bread basket was offered.
I was very disappointed with my lunch. I made a reservation for a booth. One person in my partly had crutches and was also in a sling. We did not receive a booth and the person who sat us had no idea we even asked for a booth. We were led to a very small table. The person with the crutches could not fit. We asked for a larger table and were given one.
We ordered a hot pastrami sandwich w fries. The other person had a chicken salad w blue cheese. The salad was very good and very tasteful. However, the hot pastrami sandwich was terrible. The rye bread was ice cold. You could tell it was just taken out of the refrig. The pastrami was cold and full of fat. The cook made no attempt to heat the sandwich. The fries could not be eaten. They were fried in an oil that was so strong, all you could taste was the oil. The fries tasted old. They were just terrible.
Once the lunch was brought to the table we never saw our waiter again. No one came to table to see if everything was alright and to see if we needed anything. We didn’t see anyone again until it was time to pay the bill. We didn’t need change for the bill, which was good, because we never saw our waiter again. No thank you or come again was given.
The only reason they got 2 stars was because the salad was very good. Otherwise i would have given 1 Star.
I have alway had a good experience at Max’s. The staff has always been nice and very attentive and the food good. I don’t know what happened this time!! I will go back to Max’s again, but not for awhile.
This place has gone sooo downhill. Icky food. Made me sad. It was great back in the day.
Always a reliable and excellent place for noshes, comfort food and great service!
Large portions. Too salty
We live on the East Coast so when we’re in Palo Alto we eat at Max’s as much as possible. We LOVE their food, especially the Russian Cabbage Soup and Latkes. Always feels like we’ve come home.
Love this restaurant, food is always good. I consider it a "comfort food" restaurant. A little noisy for lunch, but the food is always good.
Our server was fantastic. My friend and I dropped in for a light lunch and ended up eating only appetizers. Price was reasonable and the waitress delivered the food in stages as not to bring all the appetizers to the table at once. Beer selection is great off Tap and the ambiance was just right for an afternoon meeting, especially during the hectic Christmas Shopping Season. Great shout out to the wait staff and our waitress.
Always a favorite and never disappoints! Martinis and appetizers the best!
Stopped by for late lunch during X-mas shopping trip at Stanford Shopping Mall. Sat outside, which was a big plus and food was good, too. I’ve had better Corned Beef, but spouse really enjoyed her Kale Caesar with Salmon. ( yuk to Kale for me). Service was slow, but understaffing is reason. Server was very nice, but overwhelmed. All restaurants seem to be in same situation. Expect deli food and service, but not much more.
At 7 pm the restaurant has few lights near the tables. Candles would help a lot (the battery votive ones). It's too dark to see the food in places!
Food was fine, just that the hot things were tepid and quickly went cold. Cold plates and a long time waiting for p/u from kitchen.
It was kind of last minute party . I am very happy with the cocktails, wine menu as well as appetizers...
Marva and Arturo were very helpful and accommodating .
Great service! Thank you!
We were seated right on time for our reservation. We didn’t have to wait. The host was very polite and showed us to a very nice table. Our waiter was excellent. He came back to our table 3-4 times to make sure everything was ok and if we needed anything. The food was very good. I have never had a bad meal at Max’s. One person had a hamburger and it was cooked exactly as ordered. One person had a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich. The cheeses were not all melted. This is the only reason I did not give excellent for the food. Other than this slight mistake we had a great time and would return to Max’s.
We were shown to our reserved table immediately. The noise level was subdued. The food delivery was prompt. My Chinese chicken salad was excellent, with an ample serving. The buns with raisins were tasty and warm.
Best hamburger on the Farm!
The food & service are good at Max's Opera Cafe, and prices are reasonable. My wife and I enjoyed the turkey, bacon, & Swiss cheese sandwich with French fries along with a large ice tea. Max's is convenient for lunch when at the Stanford Shopping Center, and has an outdoor dining option.
The outdoor patio was a great place to eat at lunchtime! The salads were generous and delicious.
My entree was horrible. Hamburger steak served with ketchup? Every other restaurant does a sauce. Iced tea used to be brewed and poured over ice, not anymore. Plus server brought no refills. We were rushed to order. Max's of past glory is no more.
Waiter was not good macaroni and cheese terrible
Food service slow, sent back eggs strong vinegar taste, second time over done , did not eat, was still charged for basically having toast. Has been good previous visits, but not this one, will not return for awhile.
Good food selections--vast menu--and service. Very pleasant atmosphere. We often order from Max's thru DoorDash and have never been disappointed with the food.
