Max's Opera Cafe of Palo Alto Ratings and Reviews
I was very disappointed with my lunch. I made a reservation for a booth. One person in my partly had crutches and was also in a sling. We did not receive a booth and the person who sat us had no idea we even asked for a booth. We were led to a very small table. The person with the crutches could not fit. We asked for a larger table and were given one.
We ordered a hot pastrami sandwich w fries. The other person had a chicken salad w blue cheese. The salad was very good and very tasteful. However, the hot pastrami sandwich was terrible. The rye bread was ice cold. You could tell it was just taken out of the refrig. The pastrami was cold and full of fat. The cook made no attempt to heat the sandwich. The fries could not be eaten. They were fried in an oil that was so strong, all you could taste was the oil. The fries tasted old. They were just terrible.
Once the lunch was brought to the table we never saw our waiter again. No one came to table to see if everything was alright and to see if we needed anything. We didn’t see anyone again until it was time to pay the bill. We didn’t need change for the bill, which was good, because we never saw our waiter again. No thank you or come again was given.
The only reason they got 2 stars was because the salad was very good. Otherwise i would have given 1 Star.
I have alway had a good experience at Max’s. The staff has always been nice and very attentive and the food good. I don’t know what happened this time!! I will go back to Max’s again, but not for awhile.
Our server was fantastic. My friend and I dropped in for a light lunch and ended up eating only appetizers. Price was reasonable and the waitress delivered the food in stages as not to bring all the appetizers to the table at once. Beer selection is great off Tap and the ambiance was just right for an afternoon meeting, especially during the hectic Christmas Shopping Season. Great shout out to the wait staff and our waitress.
Stopped by for late lunch during X-mas shopping trip at Stanford Shopping Mall. Sat outside, which was a big plus and food was good, too. I’ve had better Corned Beef, but spouse really enjoyed her Kale Caesar with Salmon. ( yuk to Kale for me). Service was slow, but understaffing is reason. Server was very nice, but overwhelmed. All restaurants seem to be in same situation. Expect deli food and service, but not much more.
We were seated right on time for our reservation. We didn’t have to wait. The host was very polite and showed us to a very nice table. Our waiter was excellent. He came back to our table 3-4 times to make sure everything was ok and if we needed anything. The food was very good. I have never had a bad meal at Max’s. One person had a hamburger and it was cooked exactly as ordered. One person had a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich. The cheeses were not all melted. This is the only reason I did not give excellent for the food. Other than this slight mistake we had a great time and would return to Max’s.
The food & service are good at Max's Opera Cafe, and prices are reasonable. My wife and I enjoyed the turkey, bacon, & Swiss cheese sandwich with French fries along with a large ice tea. Max's is convenient for lunch when at the Stanford Shopping Center, and has an outdoor dining option.
Best place in at least a 10-mile radius for an "old fashioned" Prime Rib dinner Thursday through Sundays. Meaning, tender & tasty Prime Rib well-served to order, with the "mandatory" options of baked-or-mashed potato, and creamed spinach-or-broccoli. Max's can get high level of noise, especially when the pianist is in the house and diners have to talk louder to be heard over the music. There are also Max's famous desserts, worthy of their sign that said, "If you are on a Diet, this isn't the place for you!" But I think maybe they took that sign down! In any case, just to complete your non PC meal, you can sneak that dessert out of the restaurant by ordering it to go! (You'll need a break from the ample dinner to have room for the dessert anyway!)
Very good food & service with reasonable prices. Max's is an excellent choice for a meal while at the Stanford Shopping Center. The chicken Cobb salad & hot pastrami sandwiches were delicious. Diners are given the option of eating at inside or outside tables, both of which are very popular. Reservations are suggested.
