Max's Opera Cafe of Palo Alto Ratings and Reviews
We were seated right away. Service was fast and server(s) were nice. Bread was warm freshly baked. I had the seared ahi salad and husband had pear salad and sweet potato fries. For dessert we had both the raspberry rhubarb pie and Niagara Falls cake. Food was good and servings generous. Would definitely come back to this place and try other dishes. They have a long list in their menu,
I like Max's. The chicken in my chicken pot pie was a little stringy, but the kids loved their sliders and my wife liked her pasta.
The management has decided to put two "minimum wage surcharges" on the bill. I find that sort of thing incredibly obnoxious, and it makes me want to not return to the restaurant. I was having a pleasant dining experience until then, but then I just walked away angry. Make your political points somewhere else, please.
Nostalgic as always with any Max's, as I grew up in the city living all the Max's. It knows good quality food and how to make customers feel happy with superb dining experiences. I always enjoy the live music, mojito skirt skirt steak, mojitos & its signature mudpie dessert! HAPPINESS
We have always enjoyed dining at Max's Opera Cafe for years. The service is always friendly, the bar meets most customers' demands and the food is consistently good. And they don't rush you out the door, so it is a good place to meet old friends, family and business associates. It reminds of good Manhattan restaurants.
Visiting Palo Alto and staying at a hotel near to Stanford Shopping Center...we walked around for over and hour loving the energy and care everywhere...but we wound up getting old fashioned comfort food at Max's Opera Cafe...I needed a Reuben Sandwich desperately...and they came thru!!!
Matzo ball soup very nice. Less e thnically Jewish dishes ...which we missed...no chopped liver, no brisket either.
We liked it anyway but were a bit annoyed that host did not register our reservation with Open Table......so 2 days later I got an e-mail asking why I didnt go there. Not so good Max's!!!
Great place to eat! The aumbiance is great Friday and Saturdays. The live band is a great complimentary to your dinning experience. The pianist is amazing. The menu selection is great, the portions are more than you expect. That is why I love this place. I'm a bodybuilder, and athlete. For the money and portion ratio, it's worth it.
Great for pretty much any occasion, especially dating! The only thing I can say I did not like about the place is the service. It's really hit or miss with your server. I wish the company would spend time, training their servers to be meticulous, attention to detail with their customers, and make sure service is up to par. That is my only negative, but other than that, it's a great place and would recommend it to anybody who loves great entertainment and good food!
We have been going to Max's Opera Cafe for many years in different locations and each one has been a uniquely wonderful experience. We came to this one for Valentine's Day and they had a fun special menu for the occasion as well as their usual fare. This is a great restaurant to come for a quiet, intimate atmosphere coupled with great food at reasonable prices.
Max's Opera Cafe has good salads & sandwiches proceeded by delicious rolls. The chicken Cobb salad, Caesar salad, and pastrami on dark rye with french fries are very tasty.
Service is attentive and prices are reasonable for Palo Alto. Max's is a good choice for lunch when at the Stanford Shopping Center.
Max's has been around for a long time, to the point that it's just a very reliable and comforting choice. The menu is varied, yet stable, it has the "old shoe" every time we dine there. Really well-prepared food, VERY reasonably priced, and for the Stanford Shopping center location, especially, very nice decor and ambiance (they have live music most evenings). You just simply can't go wrong with Max's!
Max's food is generally good to excellent. And, most times the service is good to excellent. Unfortunately, this time things didn't go well. It is the holiday season and the place was jammed and very noisy. Our server seemed harried and although she got our orders correct, she did not remember requested water and other items. The food was pretty average. Water, coffee & tea refills just didn't happen.
So, a passable meal but nothing spectacular.
I have been to Max's many times over the years and about 3 times in the last couple of months. I must say the last few visits have been disappointing. The service and food have deteriorated in quality. The last visit we had a reservation for four people. We were still waiting for 1. The three of us were looking at the menu and the server came by and asked us if we were ready to order. I told her we are still waiting for one but I could clearly see she seemed agitated. We ordered a vegetable wrap and a open face crab cake sandwich. The vegetable wrap was 5 inches in diameter and filled with spinach. It was essentially a spinach salad wrap with very little sauteed vegetables. It was bite after bite of salad. The crab cake was also disappointing because you could not eat it like a sandwich it had to be eaten with a fork and knife so sharing was a problem. When the waitress came by to ask how things were I said so so. The manager stopped by and said did the waitress ask to replace your order but I did not recall she did and he said that she did. I'm not going to order something new I don't have time to wait . There was another table across from us with a party of 3 and one of their orders got screwed up so the lady had to wait for them to make the correct order. When our bill came they didn't even bother to take anything off. For a vegetable wrap at $16 I can get a supreme salad with salmon or steak at another restaurant. Overall the service sucked and the prices sucked more. I would not recommend.
What a pleasant meal! Every item we had (clam chowder, French onion soup, crab cakes, fish tacos) was tasty, high quality, ample, and without being over salted. Service was fast, conscientious, and understated. It was a relief to have a good, reasonably priced meal after a series of disappointing meals recently at new and/or more expensive restaurants. It remains on our list of reliable, affordable eateries.
Excellent cuisine and service beginning with the person who seated us, the staff as high quality as the food. Conversation with each other was difficult to hear due to the high noise volume. But I think that was simply due to the popularity of Max's which in itself is a plus. Enjoyed everything to the hilt but the noise level. Will most certainly return but perhaps not at the dinner hour. Thanks for being such a friendly place to dine, with fine cuisine as well. Max's has become a good habit.
The service was a bit slow even though there didn't appear to be many guests there when we got there. By the time we left it was extremely noisy. Kids yelling in the back, loud talking as the volume in the back got louder. We went for a nice quiet, intimate birthday out but that didn't happen.
