Everyone in our party gave Max's high marks for food and serve. There were more than enough beer options and the bread brought to the table was terrific. We will be back.

This was our first visit to Max’s, but won’t be our last. The salmon with fennel was outstanding. My hubby’s steak frite was done just right . Next time we both want to try the short ribs.
The service was really good. Everyone we dealt with was very friendly. The noise did get bad when a group of 20 arrived, but I think that would happen most anywhere.

On a Sunday with only 3 other tables in the restaurant, it took 3 minutes to get 2 of four cocktails and another 10 minutes for the last two, the bottle of wine was never delivered, and the salad was delivered with the main course. The sad thing is the food was truly exceptional and worth going back for but unfortunately the memories will not permit it.

The seating needs more work. We preferred a booth because my boyfriend and I are y’all however we were given two horrible options of tables to choose. Other couples got great seating and we had a reservation.

MAX'S ON BROAD OFFER A VARIETY OF INTERESTING AND VARIED MENU ITEMS. EXTREMELY GREAT VALUE FOR THE MONEY ON ALL THE FOOD MENU ITEMS WE SAW(WINE LIST PRICES ARE A BIT INFLATED). 2ND FLOOR IS DEFINITELY PREFERRED - QUIETER -- BUT A LONG STAIRCASE TO CLIMB. DOWNSTAIRS IS FUN AND LOUDER - MORE OF A BISTRO/PARTY ATMOSPHERE WITH THE TABLES ARRANGED AROUND THE BAR AREA.

Wonderful experience. Was very crowded, but this moved quickly and without interruption. Service was very good and attentive without being overbearing.

Our server, Katelyn (sp?) did an amazing job and was very courteous. I had the mahi-mahi (Waterzooi) and it was amazing! My girlfriend had the short rib and liked it okay.

Amazing setting. I had the pork shank. I cannot believe how much food they give you. The pork was so tender that it fell off the bone. The mixed vegetables were wonderful. The bread before the meal was great.

The only reason I gave it a four was the service. This is the only time I have had bad service. He was very disorganized. The table next to us just left because he was so bad.

Consistently solid, menu options are plentiful with good hand crafted cocktails, beer and wine options. Great place for brunch. Free valet parking is very helpful during the current Broad St. corridor construction, which can make finding on street parking a challenge.

Overall good experience, but we made 7:15pm reservations and was not seated until close to 8pm. They do not have a good area to wait for table. There was about 8 other parties that were also waiting to be seated and we all had to crowd the front door area. Would recommend that the host/hostess offer to serve drinks while people waiting on table. Great way to make more $ for the house and keep your customers happy.

Although we had a reservation, we still waited 50 minutes to be seated. The food was about average. Not sure the wait was worth it.

We have dined at Max’s on many occasions and have had good experiences. This evening a number of things were not up to par. We made the reservation well in advance requesting 2nd floor and asking for a window seat. I also included it was a special occasion; out of town guests and celebrating a birthday. When arriving a few minutes prior to reservation time we were told our table was to be 1st floor, a high top by the door! After some discussion we were told if we waited 15-30 minutes they could accommodate us. We agreed - what choice?! - and had a drink at the bar and then were seated in 15 minutes.

We ordered - salads were good. Dinners arrived. Three of us had scallops and they were good. One of us ordered steak and frites. The steak was a bit overdone, but worse was the discovery of a long hair under the fries. Clearly not from our guest! We had to locate our waiter and he saw the issue, was apologetic and did say he would immediately replace it. Unfortunately, by the time her dinner returned the rest of us had nearly finished.

No offer of any compensation was offered.

I think in the case of clearly a kitchen issue and disruption to all of us enjoying our dinner together, some sort of compensation gesture was in order.

Additionally, I would like to have seen the wait staff more attentive. We had to ask for more water, ground pepper for salads and when the hair in fries issue occurred we couldn’t locate our waiter in a reasonable amount of time and had to ask another wait staff to send our waiter over.

So, a very disappointing evening from many aspects. Hoping this is not an indication of what Max’s has become. We will likely need to have some time before returning.

Overall food and service were very good. It's obvious that they do not read the comments on Open Table when you make a reservation. It was a birthday and I asked for a dessert to be brought out (not for free, just to be served), and they brought us a dessert menu after the meal was over. Granted it was a special occasion, I'd be sure to let the hostess or server know since prior to the meal ending if you want any sort of surprise.

We were going to see A Raisin in the Sun at The Rep. We got there at 6 p.m. Ordered quickly, ate, and easily walked across the street to the theater for the 7 p.m. preview curtain. Plus, Max's valet parked my car! A lot to like! Food was great, and the service swift and accurate.

We've eaten at Max's several times now. This time the food was great, again, but the service was lousy. The server girl even apologized, saying she wasn't "on her game". We had to ask for every single thing. The bread, water, specials, drinks, dessert, the check....everything. The wine showed up just as my girlfriend was finishing her dinner. Nice. And it wasn't even that busy.

Still love Max's, the food is pretty awesome, but maybe the staff needs some training.

Max's was my favorite resturant in Richmond, I love the vibrant dining area and the view from the second floor window. But most of all I loved the food, it was always so fresh and full of flavor and cooked perfectly. But no more, this is the second time I have been to Max's in about six months and the food is not the same. The poutine which we loved so much; ingredients have changed and not for the better. The fish we ordered was over cooked and dry. The Belgian Beer Braised Short Ribs came with gravy on top which is a terrible change from the way they were served in the past. The crispy fried brussels sprouts with bacon that came with the ribs were over cooked and more like burnt. The bright side is the service was outstanding, but I will not be returning to Max's until they get a new Chef. My new favorite resturant is "Spoon Bread" the food is Outstanding!

As soon as we walked in and went upstairs my fiancé said that she loved the atmosphere and that she wanted to come back again some other time, keep in mind that this was before we even sat down. Mark was our sever and he offered us perfect customer service and I say that because I am TERRIBLE with names but I remembered him. We will be back and recommend others

Long wait ~ 45 minutes to get our food. Guess the kitchen was slow - even the wait staff was embarrassed about the long wait.

Food was overly salty. It was very late to the table, the table was in a high traffic chaotic area. Waitress didnt offer choce of sides listed on entree just assumed we wantes home fries. One entree was undercooked eggs were raw with clear white on top, the other entree overcooked and dry.

This is a terrific place and worth its reputation as a top rest6araunt in Richmond. Seating can be tight, but tables on the second floor in front of the windows are terrific and should be requested when you make your reservation. Food/service/ cocktails are top notch. You will really be glad you went there!

This was a lovely dining experience in a historic Richmond building with a 20' statue of Maggie Walker outside. All the windows in this establishment made it very picturesque, to this historic downtown corner. First class restaurant, in presentation and dining experience.

My wife ordered all the right things, but i did not. I just could not decide. The deviled eggs were nothing special, and my fish was undercooked, and was a little bland. The ginger desert was nothing to write home about.

My wife's arugula salad was amazing. The chocolate cake had an unusual dryness, but the icing and moose within the cake made it very, very delicious together (not rich). I would order the chocolate cake next time!

The service was no too bad, but the water disappeared at the end. Oh, they brought out the wrong white wine, but I did not tell the waiter.

A recommend, but choose your food wisely. I should have sent back the appetizer, meal, dessert and white. And, they stuck us in a corner, when i noted on my electronic reservations, not to put us in a corner.

I would like to go back one more time to redeem it, but I do not know? There are too many really good restaurants in downtown Richmond area competing with them.

Max's was a great evening, social occasion get-away. We really enjoyed the great food and amazing service. Grear ambiance - somewhere worth dressing up for but that you don't feel out of place. We definitely recommend the salmon and the orange ginger cake!

We are regular lunch diners at Max's, our experiences have always been excellent. This was our first dinner experience. The kitchen was having an off night, I have extensive restaurant experience and I understand this can happen. I have to mention that management was right on top of our concerns and they treated us exceptionally well. We want to thank them and know we will continue to be regular customers, Max's is one of our favorite spots.
