Always an outstanding menu, service and the valet parking makes it worry-free and an overall wonderful experience
Bar service was excellent.
Drink service at table was slow.
Food was very good.
Birthday party. Food was fantastic, service was a little slow but polite.
Great place, great atmosphere!!!! Enjoyed the food.
Nice place, friendly service. But not anything like the French restaurant experience I expected. French influences perhaps. Pleasant experience... but if you’re looking for a French dining experience.. look elsewhere.
Food and service was very good. Although we were there at 6:00, no one told us about happy hour - we noticed sign outside after receiving our drinks.
French onion soup had a deep, rich flavor, scallops were delicious and pork chop perfectly seasoned and cooked. Creme brûlée was the perfect ending.
Food used to be good here but everything was disappointing this time. The beer cheese with the Bavarian pretzel tasted like nothing but garlic and it was cold. The chicken with the biscuit was tasteless. It’s rare for fried chicken to be so bland. The scrambled eggs tasted like metal. We likely won’t be returning again.
I'm so sorry to hear of your disappointing time with us. The fact that you disliked your food so much makes me so disappointed. I really am so sorry and hope to make it up to you.
Food and service were excellent. Ambiance was marred a little by a few individuals dressing ball court casual instead of business casual. All staff were polite, professional, helpful, and had proficient grasp of food and beverage. We had a great date night and will return again!
Hey Gibby, Thanks for the review! I'm so happy to hear you liked the ambiance and that our wait staff was so knowledgeable and helpful. Can't wait to have you again. Thanks, Liz, Owner
We went to Max’s before going to the theater. When we got there we were never “shown” to our table. Instead the hostess pointed to our table and just said, “there’s your table.” Our waitress who was very nice disappeared before we were able to place our entree order even though we told her we had theater tickets. When we grabbed a manager to tell her we have no idea where our waitress is, her response was, “yeah, I’ve been looking for her too.” We did eventually get our order in and had plenty of time to eat it before we had to leave so we were happy about that. We did like the ambience of this restaurant and although the food was good, the portion sizes were small and the prices were large! A double bourbon and ginger was 18.00. A dozen oysters app was 27.00. Entrees were on average 27-30+ and the food was just nothing to write home about to justify the price. Everything was good but not great and the portion size just made everything feel very overpriced. For 200 which is what our bill came to, there are other restaurants I’d rather go to. So overall not a horrible experience, just not great.
Melissa, I'm so sorry to hear that our staff was not hospitable as they usually are. We missed the mark that day, but I assure you, this is not our norm. I am glad that you were able to enjoy your meal with ample time. I would try one of our other RVA Hospitality restaurants for something a little more friendly with your wallet and also for the variety they offer! Thanks, Liz, Owner
Downstairs seating not as good as upstairs. Spaetzle dish is quite bland.
Still my favorite place to eat in Richmond.
Hi Gourmand, Thanks for the feedback. I'm sorry you weren't wowed by your meal, but I'm glad we're still your favorite place! Thanks, Liz, Owner
Very enjoyable evening! Loved the food and the overall atmosphere.
Natasha, Thanks for the great feedback! I'm so happy to hear you loved your dining experience. We can't wait to serve you again. Thanks, Liz, Owner
The food is always good, the service is very good and the convenience is great. We like to eat at Max's before going to a performance at the Virginia Rep theater, less than 1 block away. Max's offers free valet parking, and our car is usually already waiting for us when we come out of the theater. There are other restaurants nearby but we like Max's because we know we'll get a good meal too.
Thank you for such a great review! I'm so happy that you were able to experience our wonderful food and service. The free valet parking is a great perk! Thanks, Liz, Owner
Table was dirty and had to remind them twice to have it clean. The utensils had dried food stains on them as well. The food was OK, but overpriced especially considering all other great options RVA has to offer.
I'm so sorry to hear about your poor dining experience with us. With your feedback, the back of house as well as front of house will be urged to triple check the silverware as well as their sections before guests are seated, Thank you, Liz, Owner
We all loved the venue but not much more. Two of us had the mussels and were advised to get the ones with curry. They were good mussels but quite small and in modest supply. The curry didn't add anything special and I generally like curry. Would have preferred the white wine, butter and garlic which I asked about. The other two had steak (so-so) and shrimp and grits (also nothing special). The vegetable medley was seasoned too much but the vegetables were fresh.
The service was odd. Only two of us were asked if we'd like a drink and not the other two. Clearing of our plates was slow. I was sad because I had had a good experience three years ago, read the reviews and made the decision for all of us to come to the restaurant.
Susan, Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to hear about your mediocre visit with us. Our servers are usually on the ball, but we seemed to have missed the mark that night. However, I'm glad you liked the venue, and hope you will come back and give us another chance. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Terrific food that is not terribly priced. Service was great as is atmosphere. Like the free valet parking as well.
Thanks for the feedback, Joanne. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed your food. The free valet is a great plus!
The food is always prepared well and of the highest quality.
good staff. smaller portions on their FANTASTIC Mussels at Brunch...dinner Mussels were larger and more plentiful - but still the MUSSELS are pretty fantastic!
Bryan was perfect server; Chesapeake omelette was delish; Biscuits and Gravy amazing; Bloody Mary and mimosa great; coffee great; fruit very fresh!
Another excellent experience at Max's for dinner prior to a show. Everyone's food was great and we'll return again soon.
Thanks for your review, Pleasane. So glad you enjoyed your dining experience with us. We can't wait to see you again. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Food was okay- beet salad had no favor whatsoever- my husbands crab cakes were fine- my steak was no very flavorful at all- I then had a hair in my dessert which was quiet gross- would not go back-so many cool restaurants now In Richmod with better food- I did enjoy my drink and thought the floors and decor was nice
Please maintain the hou level I am used to. The airline chic was a little dry and shrimp & grits so so
We’ve eaten there a couple of times. I like what I order but my husband doesn’t like his meals there. The chocolate Coca Cola cake was tterrbly dry.
We came for a 5:15PM reservation under the Special Table reservation arrangement that indicated "Wine, Cocktail, Beer, and Appetizer Specials!Enjoy $3-$5 glasses of wine, $4-$7 cocktails, $3-$5 draught beers, and $3-$8 appetizers." We arrived on time were seated. We asked about the special table reservation features and were told by the waitress that the only special arrangements were if you sat at the bar, which seemed to be tied to Happy Hour. We did not question further. We had a very enjoyable meal as we always do at Max's. I had marked on the reservation that the occasion for our evening was for a birthday celebration. The waitress did not acknowledge we were there for a birthday. The restaurant did not seem very busy given our early reservation time. We did enjoy our meal but found the mixed messages regarding the "special table" and asking about occasions for our being at the restaurant as being disconcerting and truthfully disappointing.
Haven’t eaten here for a while but we’ll be back soon. Scallops cooked perfectly. Tuna au poivre perfect summer dish. Great drinks and wine.
If you’re dining alone and want a quieter area, the 1st floor is preferred over the main dining area (2nd floor). Great restaurant. I would go again when I’m back in Richmond.
Pre theatre brunch
Very pleasant experience, excellent food and service! We will be back.
Everything was great - from the Valet outside taking care of the car to the greeting inside and our server was super.. Made some great suggestions, and everything came as ordered, and the right pass.. Great evening, look forward to our next visit. Deb and Bill Schmidt, Wmsburg
Ana waa a terrific server and the scotch old fashioned was the best! The prix fixed was a terrific idea, thanks!
Have been to Max's 3 times before - Went to Max's before The Wiz at Va. Rep on a Friday - appreciate free valet service for theatre goers (though didn't use this time), and Va Rep had promoted the Pre Fixe Theatre Menu at Max's. In NYC, I love Pre Theatre Pre Fixe Menus.
My guest was not hungry so ordered an appetizer which was rich, but tasty.
I ordered the Steak Frites from the Pre Fixe Menu. which included 2 appetizer choices, 4 entrees, and 2 dessert selections. Appetizer and Dessert limited.
1) The Steak Frites was to come on a bed of greens - nice size NY Strip - nicely cooked with good Frites, but I asked if the Greens were Spinach (which I love) and the waiter said Yes, BUT the dish came with very few "greens" hidden under the Steak and NOT Spinach : (
Soup Selection was nice corn chowder, but in 90 degree weather this Summer, a better choice to consider Vichysoisse or Gazpacho or something lighter as soup choice. Salad sounded very ordinary.
We were told the dessert was a half portion - WHY? For $29 +
Our waiter was very pleasant and personable, checked to see if steak done to liking, but once it got busy, we lost him and he never checked re: bread or water/tea refill, etc.
Needed to leave for the show, so had to get dessert to go because had not been able to flag him down. Dessert was to be lemon chess pie with whipped cream and strawberries. When I l opened the box, it was enough for 2 bites?? No strawberries ?? And melted whipped cream.
All in All the Food Quantity, Choice and Presentation on the Pre Fixe did not justify $29+, especially with 2 bites of dessert. Price should be no more than $25. with more inspired appetizer and dessert selection (and a full size dessert portion). Entrees did not include a fish/seafood selection - (2) Beef- Chicken and Vegetarian. Please modify the Steak Frites to come on a full bed of spinach for taste, color and to provide vegetable.
The best food and ambiance in Richmond. Enjoyed their unique drink specials.
We chose Max's because of good reviews from friends as well as it was close to the theatre. We attended a Sunday matinee and took advantage of the brunch menu. We got the pretzel as an appetizer (yum) with the beer cheese topping and mustard. And we both got the Eggs Benedict, also good, but could be a bit more seasoned to give it a bit more flair. The valet parking was wonderful particularly since we could leave the car until after the play was over. Max's is unique in decor and we asked to be seated upstairs so we could have a view. I imagine on a nice day, it would be perfect to sit outside and enjoy the sights so maybe that is another visit. Would recommend!
Max's never fails to please and appease! Had guests from out of town who loved the location, food and ambiance! Will definitely come back!
We both got the wrong menus, they were brunch menus, our appetizers were very good, crab deviled eggs and shrimp cocktail. Our dinners were good, my tuna was perfectly cooked, but the braised cabbage on the plate was super stringy and impossible to cut/eat, my husband had the spaetzle which were very good but the egg on top was over cooked so there was no yolk to mix into the noodles. Our server asked if we were interested in dessert and we said sure we’d like to look at the menu, we waited for over 10 minutes for him to bring it, and watched him service other tables around us, finally came back and said can I get you anything else and we just said bring our bill cuz he forgot about the dessert.
Entrees came out a bit too soon. Not enough time to enjoy cocktails and first course. All else very good to excellent
We loved our food, our drink, and our waiter! Great place to just celebrate life!
This is one of my favorite places. I've only been twice, but both times were impeccable. It's a bit too pricy to be a regular stop, but well worth it.
Tonight was potato asparagus soup, homemade ranch salad, duck with fingerling potatoes, tuna steak, and coconut cream pie. Our butter dish was dirty so they comped a second round of drinks. Even the bread is perfectly crusty.
Be prepared for at least $40 per person. Highly recommended.
Anniversary dinner. Great food, great atmosphere, quiet on a Thursday. Server was friendly but we had to be proactive.
