A disappointing experience for sure. The food was just really off.
Mediocre average food. Service was delayed.
An overall terrible experience, from the moment we walked in, to the moment we left. Having reservations, but not having a table in dining room, to an extremely noisy door that slams, and sitting right next to it in the so called "bar". To an overpriced menu for what you get, to be being told we would get things that never arrived. Too a $315 bill for for for mediocre food, this place was terrible.
As always, Max's is a absolute delight in every way. From the welcome at the door, to the décor, the service and ultimately the amazing food, Max's remains a special place for a special night!
Had a wonderful dinner there on Saturday evening on the patio. My only complaint was the noise level on Broad St. Very loud.

Everything was excellent until we were served a COLD cup of coffee. Inexcusable!
This was a perfect oasis for a Sunday afternoon lunch; delicious, quality food and drinks - great, friendly service! to be repeated as soon as possible...
Excellent Brunch. Dropped VCU senior off, had brunch. Absolutely fabulous. 4 different brunch items, each superb. Staff observered distancing and we're still personable. 6 stars if possible

Food was delicious and well presented-- as usual. Service was very good, but new hygiene protocol of sterile gloves was inconsistently implemented by three servers. (Understandable on Day One.) Three different red wines by the glass failed tasting, a subpar outcome, while the white wine of the day was a winner.

If you are in Richmond, find a way to eat here. I can’t wait to go back. The short rib was the best I’ve ever had (and I order short ribs whenever possible). My partner had the waterzooi, and he said it was outstanding. The cocktails were strong and delicious. Even the table bread and butter were remarkable. The decor was charmingly European with vintage details. Great service, too!

We always like to try new restaurants on Saturday night. Right away the ambience at Max’s was a winner. Our bartender “ one of the best I have ever seen” He not only knew the menu by heart, but every drink cocktail imaginable. Passionate about his job! The mussels, fish and short rib dishes were awesome. The lighting, decor is really comfortable and they even went out of their way to place acoustic panels in the ceiling so conversation is easy on the ears! Taking my Dad there this week for a follow up!

It is very expensive place. For such price you expect at least some creativity in food. Fish and crab cakes were “too fatty”, sauce was pure butter - which is not always substitute for “tasty”. It was a typical diner experience, not 150$ per 2 for dinner. View is amazing. Would hire more “contemporary” chef. That is why occupancy was like 20% for Friday night.
Great experience! The hostess was very engaging as she showed us to our table. Our server, Cullen, was knowledgeable and attentive! My wife LOVED the Waterzooi! The grits they use for their shrimp and grits are among the best I've had. The calamari was tasty, if a little undercooked. Ask to sit upstairs if you want a neat view!

I’ve been to Max’s several times before and it was good. This time was absolutely horrible. We had to wait 30 minutes to be seated for our reservation. Then the server kept saying they were out of bread or it was in the oven. She brought the bread AFTER our plates had been cleared from our meal. The appetizers were good, but the mashed potatoes that came with the crab cakes were simply not good. They were dry and flavorless. The crab cakes were covered in an “aioli” that was really a thick mayonnaise. My date got the mahi and the fish was not cooked through at all. It was inedible. They did offer to bring him another dish but he did not want anything. For a restaurant that is $30 a plate this was disappointing and unacceptable.

Our first visit. Dined early since we had tickets for an event later in the evening. We had a very good impression of the restaurant and quickly settled in with our menus and specials. Food was excellent, but little service details missed the mark. After a long wait, server finally brought out the bread (after we were already eating our salads). But the bread basket only had two small pieces in it and we noticed other tables received four or more. Server brought out dessert menus, and after another long wait came back to take our orders. When we asked what the gelato/sorbet flavors were, she informed us they were unavailable and that we could go elsewhere after dinner if we wanted ice cream. While they have a very nice concept in free valet parking, and even take your ticket while you are still signing for the check to expedite getting the car, there was still a very long wait (far beyond the promised 5 minutes) for the car to actually show up. Great place, but service needs attention.

Very slow service; glad there are cell phones with apps that allow you read as the waits between servings and even to get service upfront was really slow. I read an entire issue of the New Yorker and a daily NY Times. Pot pie a la king as an appetizer was the only part of the meal that was good; it had a nice tangy cheese sauce that goes will with a dry Chardonnay. It was too bad that I did not get the wine until I was almost done with the pot pie. Main course was a Waterzooi ... a fish stew. Way too salty sauce, more like pour sea water into a bowl and heating it up. Fish was not flaky but chewy. Awful. The waiter offered me a dessert for the slow service. I got a French apply cake. It was gross. It was like a rubbery bread pudding, pie shaped, with tinge of apple flavoring. The consistency was not at all pleasant. It was loaded with sugar; burned your throat. $60 wasted and burned a lot of time. Don't go.

I booked reservations for Sunday brunch here for my girl and I. I was running late, however, they were more than happy to move back my time, which was greatly appreciated. The restaurant itself is very nice, love the atmosphere. It did seem pretty busy this particular morning, however, I didn't think the wait was too long. I ordered the Chicken and Waffles, while my girl ordered the Eggs Benedict and a half order of the Goat Cheese Salad. I honestly wasn't a fan of my meal (having tasted other C&W options in Richmond) but my partner enjoyed hers, at least! I want to give this place another shot, maybe for dinner instead.

We have always loved Max’s. But this last Sunday brunch was an all-around horrible experience. We showed up at 11:30 and the restaurant was barely crowded, although it filled up quickly after noon. Once we ordered we did not receive our food for ONE FULL HOUR. Our waiter never asked if we wanted bread or checked in to apologize for the wait. After we asked where the food was on two separate occasions, he brought it out to the table on extremely hot plates that had clearly been sitting under a heat lamp for ages. The chicken biscuit was inedible, as the chicken was so overcooked and dry (probably from sitting under the heat lamp for so long). The Caesar salad had grilled shrimp on it that was barely warm. It had clearly been sitting out separately for a long period of time. They forgot our extra order of fries and then didn’t bring them until we reminded them two times and they arrived as we were signing the check. They comped us for the inedible chicken, but in my opinion that entire meal should have been comped. What a waste. We had family in town that we were trying to show a good time but instead we all left disappointed.

Max's on Broad is always great. The food is delicious and the service is good. The server is knowledgeable and friendly but not an annoying kind. Menu choices were good for everybody in our group with different tastes and preferences. We definitely will be back.

This trip to Max’s was disappointing compared to previous visits. Service was a little slow and inattentive (got dessert menus and they brought the check as we were deciding on an order). Food tasted good and came out on extremely hot plates but was lukewarm. Will chalk it up to Saturday after Valentine’s Day (2/15) and expect better next time (or there won’t be a time after that).

My wife and I went for a date night. Generous portion sizes and friendly wait staff but the food was okay at best. We skipped desert. I was expecting better.

We had a table reservation for 830 and we were not seated until after 9pm. The waiter was clearly not having a good day as he was unhappy to be serving. The appetizers arrived not the way we ordered them. Asked for no cheese on the sliders, and they arrived covered in blu cheese. Duck was cold and under cooked and we asked to have it cooked a little more and when it arrived back to the table it was ice cold and still under cooked. Order molten cake but they were out so the waiter took it upon himself to bring us something different which I could eat since I am allergic to cherries. Cappuccino machine broke and was served a cup of cold coffee.. will never be back $200 , down the drain.
