College friends just catching up for brunch.
Granted, it wasn't super busy on a Tuesday night, but our experience at Max's on Broad was really great. There was a wide range of tastes in our table of 4, but all were able to find food and drink that met their needs. My fish was really good, the wine was great, too. It's a small thing, but the bread they served was especially tasty!
Thanks for the awesome review, Lori! I'm so pleased to hear you and your guests had such a wonderful dining experience with us. I love the bread too! Thanks, Liz, Owner
Terrific service and entrees were delicious.
Thanks for the wonderful review! We pride our self on great food and great hospitality. Thanks, Liz, Owner
We went for dinner on a Saturday evening, we’re sat immediately. Our server was friendly and informative on the menu. The Duck and Gnocchi dishes were both delicious.
Thanks for the amazing review, Michelle. I'm so glad to hear you had such wonderful service and enjoyed your Duck and Gnocchi. I'll be sure to let our staff to keep up the great work. Thanks, Liz, Owner
We visited during fall 2019 Restaurant Week on the second to last day. We had to ask our waiter for the restaurant week menu and he never explained anything about the menu. There were up charges on several of the items which we did not know about until we were given our bill.
The dessert offerings were definitely a disappointment. Unspectacular chocolate cookie with a dollop of cream and square of apple strudel with scoop of vanilla ice cream, also not especially tasty. No imagination put into these.
We visited four different restaurants during restaurant week and Max’s on Broad was at the bottom of our list. We had previously been told by friends to skip them, and sadly, we now know why😞.
Very nicely done with good service and food........................................................mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Thanks for the amazing review, Margaret! I'm so glad to hear you had such an amazing dining experience! I think the food and hospitable service is great too. See you again soon. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Asked for a window-facing table as we were entertaining friends from the west coast; didn’t happen. Food was good but not the “wow” I have experienced at Max’s in the past.
Thanks for the feedback. We appreciate every comment. I'm sorry you weren't able to get the seat you requested. It's our policy to let our guests know that if they request a certain table, we try our best to make it happen, but we can't promise it. I'll be sure to make sure our staff is reinforcing this. Our executive chef is working diligently with our kitchen staff, re-training them on recipes as well as revamping them. Give is some turn around time and you'll see! Thanks Liz, Owner
My sister & I visited during Richmond Restaurant Week Fall 2019. Our meals from the Fixed Price menu were delicious and excellent value. The service was helpful and unobtrusive. The atmosphere reminded me of restaurants in Europe and we loved the background music. My only disappointment was the lack of an elevator to the upstairs dining area. However, there is plenty of cosy dining space downstairs.
Thanks for the amazing review! I'm so happy to hear you and your sister had such a great time and loved the food. Our restaurant week menu is always a fan fave. I'll be sure to let our servers know to keep up the great work! Thanks, Liz, Owner
First time. Great location. Love the upper level overlooking Maggie. Food was excellent and creative. Who knew Belgium food could be notable? Our server was great. Small, quiet, intimate, unrushed.
Thanks for the awesome review! I love our menu and the views are great. I'll be sure to let our servers know how amazing they're doing. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Fantastic! Really delicious, charming and pleasant staff, classic French bistro ambience. Can’t wait to go back.
Food was good, service too. Disappointed that it seemed the hosted failed to tell the server that we had two birthdays at our table.
Hey Dennis, Thanks for the review. I'm sorry to hear the host didn't mention the birthdays. It's our policy that we ask if our guests are dining for a special occasion. I'll make sure our hosts and servers are following through with this policy. I am glad to hear your food and service were so good! I think it is too. Thanks, Liz, Owner
We have frequented Max's numerous times prior to shows at the REP Theatre. The trend has been down in the food and the prices have continued to go up. The salmon was very salty (2 of us had this and both were very salty) and the gnocchi was gummy and the egg was not runny that may have added some liquid
Thanks for the feedback Michael. Our new, executive chef is working diligently with our kitchen staff to revamp recipes and fix these issues. We'll get back to the Max's you remember and love. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Everything was off.
My husband, my teen and I had dinner before a show at November Theater, which is practically next door. You can valet your car for dinner and the show. I like the ease of this arrangement.
I started off with a specialty drink, lime something. It was refreshing and bright. I would have liked it even better had it been a hot day. We didn’t get appetizers, but our wait brought us warm bread and herb butter. Wow! Lightly crispy crust & soft warm moist inside-we devoured it. We didn’t dare get more ( although asked) because we would have ruined our appetites. I read once that one can predict the quality of the food to come by the pre dinner bread that’s served, and I’ve found that to be true. Our meals were tasty, prepared well and delivered right off the stove. I had the mussels [appetizer] with crab and lobster cream sauce and a small salad with balsamic dressing as my entree. Teen got a filet mignon encrusted with blue cheese--nicely seared but tender and red inside- served atop mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. I was surprised my teen ate everything on her plate! My mussels were cooked perfectly, and the crab and lobster sauce was a nice accompaniment. Toasted bread slices were served on the side for absorbing the delectable sauce. Hubby had the NY strip which was delicious. Obviously Max’s uses high quality meat. I enjoyed tasting the different flavors of the NY strip and the filet. We three shared a strawberry cheesecake slice & I had an espresso. It was a nice finish to the meal, although I prefer a graham cracker crust on my cheesecake.
Our waiter was perfect. She was attentive at all times without being obtrusive or interrupting. She checked on us once while I was holding my hair off my neck (hot flash). She brought me a tall glass of ice cubes and a cloth. Holding the glass against my neck helped sooo much. Sweet relief! I don’t recall her name, but she said she was relatively new to rva. She was petite with long blonde hair pulled up in a ponytail.
Thanks for such an awesome review! I'm so glad to hear about what a great time you and your family had at Max's and how wonderful your server was. We love to show our guests hospitality and serving great food makes it even better! I'll be sure to let our staff know how amazing they're doing and to keep it up! Thanks so much, Liz, Owner
As always a great place to go before VA Rep shows. Menu still needs more variety. Better salads and add ons as in the past.
Thanks for the review! Our new, executive chef is working diligently on making great changes to the menu. I can promise you'll see them in the near future. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Always the right choice!
Hey Amy, Thanks for the stellar review! We can't wait for you to join us again. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Very good food, on the somewhat pricey side. Service was good. We will go back again.
Hey Mark, Thanks for the review! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the food and that the service was so great. We can't to have you back! Thanks, Liz, Owner
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Max’s on Broad! The service was great and the food was even better. The mushroom risotto was one of the best mushroom risottos I’ve ever had! The short ribs and the fish were also delicious! We would highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning the next time we are in Richmond!
Hey, Thanks for the amazing review! We pride ourselves on great food and great hospitality. It means so much to me that you got to witness that. I love, love, love our short rib too. One of my favorite dishes! Can't wait to have you back, Liz, Owner
The food was underwhelming and a lot of fat on the duck. In addition, our car got hit on a”hit and run” during the valet’s watch. :(
Hi, I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience with us. Our new, executive chef is working with the kitchen staff, making major improvements to recipes so that this kind of thing doesn't keep happening. As far as your car, I'm sorry to hear that it was damaged. Our valet unfortunately has no control over the environment, but we are truly apologetic that this happened to you. Again, I'm so sorry, Liz, Owner
Wonderful location. Ask to be seated upstairs as the view is wonderful. The waitstaff was most attentive. A good drinks list. It was not a busy night so I was expecting a bit more from the kitchen. My wife's entree was perfect, but my swordfish was over cooked. I should have asked for it to have been redone. But, I was hungry, I hated to give the charming waitstaff bad news, and I was in a birthday mood.
Hey David, Thanks for the feedback! I'm sorry to hear that your swordfish was overcooked. Our staff would've happily prepared you another one- don't worry about delivering bad news. We love criticism and are here to make you happy! I am glad to hear your wife enjoyed her meal so much and that the service was so wonderful. I'll be sure to let the know to keep up the good work and remind them to make sure our guests are enjoying their meals. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Superb service, food was delicous as always. Very enjoyable evening prior to the theater.
Hey Deborah, Thanks for the awesome review! We pride ourselves on great food and great service-so happy you got to witness it! Thanks, Liz, Owner
Wonderful ambiance but service was poor and food just ok. Waiter served my wine 10 min after he brought our oysters and brought our crackers literally after they were gone. Crab cakes were good, not great, vegetables again good but very sparse. A good meal that w a little better service would have been worth value.
Hey Pat, Thanks for the feedback. I'm sorry to hear the service was subpar. It's not our norm. I will make it a point that our staff is retrained on urgency and courtesy so that this does not continue to happen. I am glad that you loved the ambiance and I hope you give us a second chance to impress you. Again, I'm so sorry, Liz, Owner
Wish I could write something nice about Max's, but . . . While our waiter was very nice and very apologetic, unfortunately there was much to apologize for. Our party of five ordered two orders of chicken and waffles, two orders of chicken and biscuits, and one order of pancakes and bacon for breakfast. When the waiter asked me (the pancake person) how I wanted my eggs, I replied that I didn't want eggs. The waiter said that they were included, and when someone else said they would eat them, I said only if they were brought on a separate plate. The waiter offered to do this. When the breakfast arrived, there were the eggs, piled up on the pancakes -- no separate plate. Then there were the pancakes themselves. I have never bought those frozen pancakes in the supermarket that you can put in your toaster, but I am sure that these are what they must be like (and suspect that is what they were). They were small, tough as anything, only warm and were completely identical in size. True ... the last point can be achieved with an egg ring or some other mold on the skillet, but I suspect these were out of a freezer box. And then there was my wife's breakfast. She had one of the orders of chicken and biscuits . . . unfortunately, what was brought out instead was biscuits with some horrid looking gravy on them. The plate was sent back to be replaced with the right entree. 15 minutes later, everyone was done, but the replacement breakfast had yet to arrive. Asking the waiter how much longer it would be, he went back to the kitchen and reported that they hadn't started making it yet. We cancelled that entree and asked for the bill. I don't know if he thought he was making things better, but the waiter told us not to worry -- that the undelivered breakfast would be taken off the bill. Really? He thought I was worried about that? Not likely I would have paid a bill for unprovided food and not likely that we will ever visit Max's again.
Hi, Thanks for the feedback. I'm so sorry to hear of your terrible experience with us. From the eggs, to the incorrect meal, and the wait to correct it-it's completely embarrassing. I can promise you, our mistakes will not go unnoticed. With your review, we will retrain our staff on the importance of attentiveness as well as urgency. A manager presence will also be more evident in the dining room to oversee these issues and to ensure they do not continue. Again, I'm so sorry, Liz, Owner
I was extremely disappointed. I remember the Old Max’s from a few years ago when the menu had many great choices & the service was excellent. Sadly both have changed for the worse
A very enjoyable dinner. The scallops were perfectly cooked.
Hi Jim, Thanks for the review! So glad to hear you scallops were perfectly cooked to your liking. Thanks, Liz, Owner
We went to Max's for Sunday brunch. The restaurant is cute and charming. We were sat upstairs. They had the windows all opened up, which was a little hot since it was close to 90 degrees outside. Our server was nice, but she was not attentive at all. We ordered mimosas and were brought a mini champagne bottle and a shot glass full of orange juice. Of course we drank that quickly and my husband had to hunt down staff to order more orange juice. They just brought us 2 small shot glasses of oj.
We ordered the chicken and waffle, the filet mignon benedict (special) with a side belgian waffle, filet mignon sliders, and kale cesar salad. The chicken and waffles were ok. The chicken was very dry and the waffle was just average. You could likely make a better one at home. The filet mignon benedict special was good. Again, waffle was just average. Wasn't even served with butter. Filet sliders and pomme frites were good. Kale cesar was good.
Luckily, we had a gift card for most of our bill, otherwise, we would have been very disappointed to have paid $$$ for the food and service were received. Sadly, we likely will not be returning or recommending.
It was 5pm and we asked to be seating upstairs but if we had known how hot it was, we would have sat downstairs. Fans could have been on higher and AC lower. I understand it was a hot afternoon but I can't believe that others have not complained about the heat upstairs. Very uncomfortable.
Hi, Thanks for the feedback. I spoke to the manager and the AC wasn't working properly that day so I do apologize. Typically, its our policy to ask our guests if they;re comfortable so we know to move you somewhere more enjoyable. I'll be sure that our servers are aware of that. Thanks, Liz, Owner
This space, first of all, is SO beautiful! Ambience of a Belgian Brassiere is on point with a great patio seating option along with charming upstairs and downstairs spaces.
The menu looked really exciting and everything sounded fantastic. On arrival, though, the food was just OK. Shrimp and Grits tasted like just that . . . plain, grilled shrimp over creamy, stone-ground grits. Quality shrimp, quality grits, but no kicker. The beef short ribs ordered by my dining companions looked to be the same situation. Menu description out-kicked its coverage.
Nothing wrong with Max's, and maybe I'd go back and try something else. Steak Frites looked good coming out, as did the prime rib sliders. Along with an impressive selection of Belgian beer, maybe the simpler stuff is a better pick. I have dinner scheduled at L'Oppossum next week, and will look forward to drawing the comparison to this restaurant that's vying for the same clientele.
Hi Ricker, Thanks for the feedback. We truly appreciate all comments. I'm sorry to hear you were unimpressed by your meals. It sounds like we had a pretty off day. I do hope the restaurant's beauty will bring you back and I highly recommend our Steak Frites on your next visit. Thanks, Liz, Owner
The attention to detail there is unsurpassed. They made our 32 anniversary dinner extraordinary with the best service, sparkling wine and special creme brulee to celebrate, and beautiful interior. I will definitely highly recommend Max's for fine dining and service.
Hi Sharon. I'm glad to hear our staff made your anniversary so enjoyable and that you also loved the wine and creme brulee. I'll be sure to let them know they're doing amazing. Thanks, Liz, Owner
We dined in during Max's Sunday brunch. The menu looked amazing, but upon receiving our meals, we were largely underwhelmed. I had the Bananas Foster french toast, but the bananas didn't taste quite right. My husband had the chicken & biscuit but his chicken was rubbery, and in my opinion, completely inedible - I assume from freezing/reheating. Our drinks were good, and our server was friendly and attentive. We dined on the patio and it was really nice with the exception of some pestering flies and a few questionable passerbys. I love how the restaurant is decorated. If you go, I highly recommend making a trip up the staircase. It's truly a beautiful building inside. If you are looking for great French or French-influenced dining, I would encourage you to check out nearby Bistro 27 or Chez Foushee.
Thanks for the feedback, we truly appreciate every comment and suggestion. I'm sorry to hear your meals were so underwhelming. We have a new executive chef and he's making positive changes so that these things don't continue to happen. I am glad to hear that you liked our decor and that the service was hospitable. Thanks, Liz, Owner
The ambiance at Max’s on Broad is great, from the outdoor seating, to the bar area, to the upstairs seating looking out over Broad Street. The food and service is excellent. Great experience!
Hey Stephanie, thanks for the awesome review! So glad you had such a wonderful dining experience. We can't wait for you to join us again. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Wonderful service delicious food and drinks.
Thanks for the great review, I think our food and drinks are delicious too! I'll be sure to let our bartenders and chef know. Thanks, Liz, Owner
I ordered the scallops, there were only three (tons of spinach and barley) it was a little over run with veggies and not enough protein in the meal unfortunately
Hi, I'm sorry to hear that your dish wasn't to your liking. We have a new executive chef and he's working extremely hard to make some positive changes that we're sure you'll be able to see in your next visit. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Lovely French bistro and great atmosphere. Our server however charged us an additional $58 for appetizers we did not order or receive. While mistakes happen and he quickly corrected the error, we're grateful we caught it since obviously he did not. Otherwise all went well and we would consider returning.
Hey Victoria, I'm glad to hear you liked the restaurant's atmosphere! Mistakes do happen when trying to move too quickly. I'm happy to hear that your server was able to correct the error in your check. Thank you, Liz, Owner
Always an outstanding menu, service and the valet parking makes it worry-free and an overall wonderful experience
Hi Terry! Thanks for the wonderful feedback. It makes me so happy to hear you enjoyed your overall experience with us. We strive to be hospitable and to make sure our guests leave feeling nothing less than amazing and it sounds like we accomplished that! Thanks, Liz, Owner
Bar service was excellent.
Drink service at table was slow.
Food was very good.
Hey, thanks for the great review! The food is so delicious and the drinks top it of so well! Thanks, Liz, Owner
Hey Albert! Thanks for the awesome review. I think Max's is outstanding too. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Birthday party. Food was fantastic, service was a little slow but polite.
Hey, thanks for the feedback. We really appreciate it. I'm so glad you enjoyed your party as well as the food. The servers can get pretty busy, but I assure you they never mean for in to be intentional. Their manners make up for it! Thanks, Liz, Owner
Great place, great atmosphere!!!! Enjoyed the food.
Hey Elizabeth, thanks for the awesome review. So glad you enjoyed the atmosphere and food. Max's decor is beautifully historic and the delicious food makes it even better of an experience. Thanks, Liz, Owner
Nice place, friendly service. But not anything like the French restaurant experience I expected. French influences perhaps. Pleasant experience... but if you’re looking for a French dining experience.. look elsewhere.
Hey Robert. Thanks, for the review. I'm sorry to hear it wasn't the experience you thought it would be. Max's menu is more so influenced by french cuisine rather than the restaurant as a whole. However, we're always open to any comments and suggestions if you have any. On another note, it's good to hear that the service was hospitable. Thanks, Liz, Owner
