Food and ambiance were lovely. Service was delightful. And we really appreciate the valet parking that makes it so easy to go on to the theater after a lovely brunch. Thanks!
Max's on Broad is a go to when attending the Richmond Forum.
This was our first visit. We had the pork chop and the short ribs. Neither disappointed. You expect the entrée itself to be good, but even the vegetables were outstanding!
The service was attentive and professional. The meal itself was well paced. Nothing was rushed, yet nothing felt like it was late.
We will return.
I have never had a bad experience at Max’s. The food is excellent and the drink options are wide
Great setting and consistently excellent food. Prices are on the high side for the overall experience. The free valet parking is a plus -- and a necessity -- along Broad Street. Only glitch as I was leaving was that valet was far more interested in looking at his smart phone than looking out for customers.
Our server was amazing!!!
A nice dinner but my spare rib was all fat...nice flavor...but mostly unedible... it was an expensive meal...we were looking for a new favorite spot...still looking
We like the restaurant, and were looking forward to a good evening. Everything except the wine and coffee were of inferior quality, including the table which had a terrific wobble until fixed by the maitre de.
The waitress and everyone else was kind and helpful, but they were working uphill all the way.
Brought family in from NYC and they were thrilled with the food and experience
Perfect prelude to theater down the block. Excellent food, attentive servers, and a welcoming vibe. Valet parking attracted us; the dining experience brings us back. Nikita's hospitality is icing on this cake.
Excellent food and service nice pairings with cocktails and food.
We love Max's. And one of the things that we love about it is that the menu items change. That said, the new menu is radically different from the previous one. Several of the new items seemed really odd to us. And classics like waterzooi were gone.
The latest menu limits brunch to specialty items (e.g., Belgian waffle only with banana and peanut butter), rather than standard fare (French toast, Belgian waffle). Our meals, though fairly pricey, were so-so. Our waiter was professional and generally courteous, but withdrawn and appeared to be perturbed.
Not a big crowd for a Saturday night. Very quiet. Service was excellent.
We've been to this restaurant several times before. We've always enjoyed ourselves. This visit was a little different. We noticed a change in the menu. We were unhappily surprised that there were no chicken or pasta dishes on it. We ordered several appetizers - one of them was their cheeseboard. One of the cheeses was pungent and overpowering. We brought this to the waitresses attention and she made it right. The PB&J foie-gras was also a disappointment. We ordered that for the couple that was joining us. They did not enjoy it at all. For my main course, I ordered the short ribs. The meat was tender, but the broccoli was not as it should have been - a bit dried out. All in all, we had a lovely time, but the food was not up to its usual high standards this time.
I’ve dined many times at Max’s. This was a little more chaotic and noisier with the pre-curtain crowd but the service was attentive, the food delicious and well-prepared. We returned apres theatre for drinks. The bartender was unsure of the recipe for my stinger but looked it up and produced a winner! Another enjoyable evening in an RVA fave!
Awesome aesthetic and great service. We loved our meal and definitely recommend booking a table for this place surely can fill up quick.
The menu since our last visit has shrunk. Very few choices. Unfortunately, we found Max’s to now be WAY over priced. Appetizers were $18-20 and entrees were $35+. Both are about 1/3 over priced. Service was slow. We won’t be back.
Our waiter, Mark, was outstanding!!! And he also recommended an excellent wine - just what I wanted. Also the valet service connected with the VA Rep performance was excellent - our car was waiting when we came back from the play. The problems were with the food: my scallops were so over cooked I could hardly cut them - worst I’ve ever had! Should have sent them back...Also the crab ruffles that accompanied our pimento cheese appetizer were so spicy they made us gag!!! On the other hand, Mark comped our piece of delicious chess pie for dessert to offset our complaints. We like the location, the staff, & ambience but will be very careful about what we order if we go back.
We have enjoyed Max on Broad before, but we were disappointed this time. The French Onion soup my wife ordered contained strips of solid material that looked like dried onion membrane, but it could not be easily torn by hand; she was pretty sure that at least some of it was plastic, perhaps from the cheese wrapper. Her chicken a la king had very little chicken in it. I had ordered a short rib on spätzle. What I got was one chunk of short rib that was mostly fat and very little meat. Although sous vide cooking tends to leave a lot of fat in the final product, it does not remove lean. Also, some of the spätzle was hard and uneatable due to being overcooked, which I found unpleasant to get through.
Service seemed a bit disjointed. Drinks late and most of meal done before the wine was served.
Short rib was good. Broccoli was chewy.
Overall, good not great.
I have always loved Max’s and always try to find the time to go. Their food never disappoints! However, this time I was seated next to a large party of people attending a conference dinner and was overwhelmed by their noise. The rest of the upstairs was practically empty and as I had made a reservation weeks in advance and that their was a known late group coming I should’ve been seated elsewhere. Not directly next to the large group of people. It really hampered the experience, but the food was still good. I just wish our experience had been overall more pleasing.
Our server Adrian was superb! He was knowledgable and personable. His explanation of food an wine pairings were spot on. We will definitely be back again.
Our waiter was excellent. Very knowledgeable and attending. The food was delicious. We were there for brunch. I thought the entrees were a bit pricey. Everything was delicious though.
Decided to change our routine of having Sunday brunch near home, So I check OpenTable and, based on that info, decided to drive to Richmond and thy Max's. Great decision! Very nice atmosphere. Took a table upstairs. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive...not afraid to make suggestions. We had the Fish Frittata and Chicken and Waffle "Bennie". Super. The Frittata was enough for a next day breakfast at home! From that experience, we certainly plan to return to Max's and do some more exploring of the Richmond eatery scene more often.
We have eaten at Max’s several times in the past the last time prior to this being about 4 months ago. While we highly pleased in the the past we weren’t last Saturday. The menu has changed and the service was not as good. Also, understanding it was a busy night, there was a lot of commotion with the new staff. Food was being delivered to the wrong tables, including ours. Case in point, my wife ordered a cappuccino. Not only did we wait for nearly 10 minutes, what was ultimately delivered was a crock of French onion soup.
The food itself was okay but not to the level we expected.
Certainly a very good restaurant, but we were disappointed.
We were able to get a last minute reservation after our other reservation fell through and everything was delicious! Service was great and we had a great time even though we weren’t in a great mood when we got there. In fact, I’ve never had a bad meal here.
Waiter was very good and attentive. Food arrived on a timely basis. My pork chop was awesome on a bed of cheese grits. Love the raw oysters. Nice wines.
After too many loud, bustling restaurants, Max’s was a friendly oasis of calm fine dining. While the restaurant was appropriately busy on a Saturday night, we did not feel crowded or rushed. The food and service was excellent. One of my companions commented on the appropriate single large ice cube in her old fashion, an indication of the restaurant’s attention to detail. The prices were a little on the high side for my frequent dining out, but not for a special occasion. I highly recommend.
It was a great evening as usual. We had 8:00 theater tickets, 6:15 reservations and we were done with dinner around 7:30. The service was perfect and our server very friendly. Food was delicious and we were able to leave our car in valet parking for the evening. 👍🏼👍🏼
I had another wonderful experience at Max’s in Broad. My wife got the scallops and I got the steak. I added crab meat for a little extra indulgence. Both were perfectly prepared and we enjoyed to the last bite. We ended with coffee and dessert. Peanut butter and chocolate pie and a scoop of the mocha latte gelato. We left completely satisfied. With the valet parking in and out is a breeze too.
Everything we wanted and more! The food was delicious, service was great, very enjoyable the first placed we dined on our super club list, Excellent!
We were surprised by the menu change. All of our favorites were gone. Our meals were good but the selections were limited, especially in the starters. Another Richmond restaurant serving pimento cheese? We missed the poutine and the crab appetizers.
Mark was a great server. The valet was too efficient; we sat and waited for 15 minutes for our vehicle and it had been sitting outside - no one told us.
Good food, just a little noisy but you can still have a conversation.
We’ve been to Max’s on Broad a few times for dinner and it was very good. Our brunch was good, but nothing exceptional. The place is cool and our server was very hip but the omelette wasn’t any better than I would have expected at a cheaper establishment. The meal price was ok, just not what I would call a good “value”. All of that said, the Irish Coffee with a splash of Jamison was very good. Plus $2 for the whisky seemed a bit steep given it couldn’t have even been an ounce but it was good and I recommended it.
It was not as good as in the past. The menu was not as enticing. I had shrimp/grits-just OK. Hubs had tuna-not so good. Waiter was flippant. Before a friendly manager would come by to check on us, no sign of him the last 2 visits.
We LOVE Max's!! Great food great service!!!! Everything you want for a fun experience!
The steak was fatty and not very flavorful, which was surprising given that it was $36.
Very disappointed to say they changed their menu and not at all for the better. Our food was truly bad and not even cooked.
