Highly recommend. Food was great and service was excellent.
This place continues to exceed expectations in every aspect of the dining process.....
They really know how to fix eggs. Valet parking for Easter brunch, excellent. Side dishes were excellent, service great. WE will be back.
The food was amazing from the table beneigts to the escargot
While I enjoy the setting of Max's, the quality of the food and service versus the price is really not appropriate. I am accustom to a higher price point in a restaurant in Richmond especially when they use locally sourced food items. However, I do expect a certain quality in my food and then service that is delivered and it fell very short this visit. I will probably never be back to Max's after this visit either. It took over a half hour to even give our order to our server and we rarely saw him to ask for refills on coffee or cocktails. My husband's sunny-side-up eggs we're grossly undercooked (with visible clear egg white on one of them), my mother's eggs Benedict where nothing special and my filet mignon sliders fell short in the flavor department. All of these meals were at least $14 as well. For a bill that was over $100, I did not feel like we had a great value for that.
Service, atmosphere, food and drink all good. The removal of poutine from the menu, however, has sent me into a deep, dark depression which may drive my family to relocate to Canada.
Excellent food and service, will definitely come back here.
We were kind of worried about Max's after the previous menu revision, which was a radical one, but the menu has been revised again to make it more like the old menu. Customer favorites like the waterzooi have been brought back, and the overall feel of the menu is very classy. We're delighted not only that the menu has been restored to greatness, but also that the restaurant clearly listened to its customers' feedback. On top of that, the dishes we got were perhaps the best we've ever had from there. Max's is on its A game once again, and we can't wait to go back.
My husband and I wanted a quiet, romantic dinner and Max's certainly delivered! Our server, Catherine was outstanding in her professionalism and knowledge of both the food, as well as which wine would best be paired with our order. In the appetizer department, the bone marrow and escargots were wonderful, and the oysters with caviar beautiful and as well as delicious. Regarding entrees, the blue cheese crusted filet was outstanding and perfectly prepared. Go to Max's for a special night or even a casual night with friends, you most certainly will have a memorable evening.
Nice greeting, upstairs seating was nice, server was informed but seemed distracted at first but got better, mussels were Ok but a bit uncooked, I was told that the fish of the day was rockfish but it turned out to be salomon I didn't want to make a fuss so I let it ride, scallops were good but a bit overpriced.
Delicious food and great atmosphere. Had a service hiccup at brunch, but the staff went above and beyond to make it right. I would definitely go back!
I used to LOVE Max's. I haven't been for awhile but brought my son and his girlfriend for a birthday dinner. I was so disappointed with the changes. No more thick filets with bernaise. No more salads with blue cheese dressing. And the service was not good. The waitress said she was going to get us bread and then forgot to bring it. We got our salads before the appetizers. I ordered a simple salad and got nothing but spinach. This was always my go to spot for dinner before the theatre, or special events but this year I am going to have to find somewhere new and that makes me sad.
Somewhat limited menu and a little pricey. However I always enjoy the food and ambience here.
It was our 5th anniversary. Everything was great. Truly an evening to remember.
Max's was a lovely experience. The yellowfin tuna was exceptional as was the roasted cauliflower. Service was solid; upstairs area was perfect for a nice night.
It’s been 3 years and our son wanted to go there for his birthday. Food quality for price was not what we expected and remembered. We are disappointed and our leftovers must have been thrown away.
Lovely space, good food, a bit pricey. Service was earnest but inexperienced
I’ve dined at Max’s on multiple occasions, and the food did not nearly meet expectations on this visit. The short ribs were burned and fatty, we had to ask for bread, and the server forgot to ask if we would want dressing on our salads. We’ve usually loved the food but will think twice before returning.
Drinks were decent. Ambiance and energy remained unchanged and quite satisfactory.
Customer service was phenomenal. Food was exquisite. Astmosphere was perfect for a nice date.
Seat by the open windows upstairs. Timely serving of all courses. On point service . Great dinner with friends.
It was our first restaurant experience on our trip to Richmond and it set a high bar. Our waiter, Adrian, was just perfect as we let him set the stage for the meal. He was knowledgeable about the ingredients, specialities of the house, local wines, and just a great ambassador for the restaurant as well as for Richmond. The food was very interesting from the Escargot&Marrow to the Shrimp and Grits to the must have (as recommended by Adrian) bread pudding. This dessert is not a west coast sweet dessert but a rich, earthy and tasty morsel that went perfect with the Port Adrian brought with it. It was a wonderful evening sitting outside and a truly fine dining experience.
I went on a Thursday evening for dinner and the restaurant was less crowded than I expected. I'm thinking the restaurant has developed a steady crowd yet, but expect it will. I was greeted right away, but since my friend had not arrived I had a glass of wine at the bar. The bar service was quick and the bartender very friendly. After my friend arrived we were shown to our table. The table was perfect and the overall ambience is great. Our server was very quick to introduce himself and offer us insight into the dishes, wine list, etc. The table service was very good. Our server brought us complimentary bread and butter, which was delicious. We ordered an appetizer as well, also very good. Our dinner entrees were good, not great, the sides were better than the mains. We both had filets. One was slightly overcooked and the other undercooked -- quite possibly the kitchen accidentally switched our steaks.
In any event, the dinner and restaurant were both very enjoyable and I will certainly go back and try other menu options.
Use less black pepper on scallops. We would go back for dinner. Food good. Recommended wine also good
Great food and wonderful decor.
The waiter was wonderful!
Food and ambiance were lovely. Service was delightful. And we really appreciate the valet parking that makes it so easy to go on to the theater after a lovely brunch. Thanks!
Max's on Broad is a go to when attending the Richmond Forum.
This was our first visit. We had the pork chop and the short ribs. Neither disappointed. You expect the entrée itself to be good, but even the vegetables were outstanding!
The service was attentive and professional. The meal itself was well paced. Nothing was rushed, yet nothing felt like it was late.
We will return.
I have never had a bad experience at Max’s. The food is excellent and the drink options are wide
Great setting and consistently excellent food. Prices are on the high side for the overall experience. The free valet parking is a plus -- and a necessity -- along Broad Street. Only glitch as I was leaving was that valet was far more interested in looking at his smart phone than looking out for customers.
We ate early; pre-concert. We were greeted with a smile, seated at a great table with a view, and promptly introduced to our server, Danielle. She was great! The menu was explained, specials detailed questions answered, all with a professional and friendly manner. The craft cocktail was yummy! Pimento Croquettes were perfectly seasoned and a wonderful start to the meal. Our entrees were Rockfish 'Waterzooi' for her, and Yellowfin Tuna au Poivre for me. They were taste sensations, perfectly cooked and presented well! We had a nice Cotes du Rhone to accompany. After dinner coffee and a splurge on Thalhimer Chess Pie topped everything off. The pie was lemony tart, subtly sweet, with a flaky crust to die for! We will be back!
Our server was amazing!!!
A nice dinner but my spare rib was all fat...nice flavor...but mostly unedible... it was an expensive meal...we were looking for a new favorite spot...still looking
We like the restaurant, and were looking forward to a good evening. Everything except the wine and coffee were of inferior quality, including the table which had a terrific wobble until fixed by the maitre de.
The waitress and everyone else was kind and helpful, but they were working uphill all the way.
Brought family in from NYC and they were thrilled with the food and experience
Perfect prelude to theater down the block. Excellent food, attentive servers, and a welcoming vibe. Valet parking attracted us; the dining experience brings us back. Nikita's hospitality is icing on this cake.
Excellent food and service nice pairings with cocktails and food.
We love Max's. And one of the things that we love about it is that the menu items change. That said, the new menu is radically different from the previous one. Several of the new items seemed really odd to us. And classics like waterzooi were gone.
The latest menu limits brunch to specialty items (e.g., Belgian waffle only with banana and peanut butter), rather than standard fare (French toast, Belgian waffle). Our meals, though fairly pricey, were so-so. Our waiter was professional and generally courteous, but withdrawn and appeared to be perturbed.
Hi Ron, Sorry to hear about the limited menu and so-so meal. I am working with management and staff to increase training and produce more than moderate food for guests. I hope you can come back in the near future when we have made more improvements to our menu and service. Thank you for your review, Liz
Not a big crowd for a Saturday night. Very quiet. Service was excellent.
