What a beautiful restaurant! I was there with some colleagues and everyone enjoyed their entrees. We all voted that the Brussels sprouts were the best!!!
I thought this place was fine. Nothing special and for the price, its not where you want to visit. My wife and I very quickly spent $200 but could have eaten a comparable meal for $80-120.
If prices drop I will consider a return visit but all things the same, there are plenty of other great options I would visit before I return here.
Martini was warm, oysters had lots of shell shards in them, cherry pie was macerated ill tasting black mush, waitress was clueless. Overall experience was also marred BY SITTING NEXT TO THE TIOLETS!
$33 for 3 scallops is a rip off. The menu described the dish as having asparagus and it did, but there were just a few tiny pieces in the risotto. The crab cake was mainly filler. The waitress seemed new and didn’t know what she was doing. In the past we have loved Max’s, but the meal on Friday was unacceptable.

We were a party of six and arrived a few minutes before our reserved time. We were seated right away for which we were very happy because last year we waited about an hour to be seated. We were also happy to be seated upstairs because there is a little less commotion and the noise level is not as high as downstairs.
Our waiter was helpful and efficient, checking in with us at good intervals. The food was good, but the turkey was pretty dry, unlike last year when it was excellent. We all had the turkey dinner, and my daughter (an adult) also had the truffle macaroni and cheese and the champagne cocktail. She did not like the macaroni and cheese but did like the cocktail. All in all, we had a good dinner and we would consider maybe returning next year.

Thanksgiving. One of few restaurants open Thanksgiving. Traditional T’giving dinner. Seated quickly, served quickly, food arrived quickly. The mashed potatoes were almost warm. The dressing was very tasty. Everything else was great.

Atmosphere and service was great. The restaurant was busy and festive for Thanksgiving Day. Hostess and waitress were very pleasant and seemed to know when we needed something. It’s probably not fair to critique food on a holiday but offerings were just average. About a third of my steamed mussels were empty, another person at our table thought the Mac and cheese was dry, roasted chicken was pronounced “okay” by another.

My boyfriend and I went here for the Thanksgiving meal and it was authentic, just like we pictured it would be. The service was very kind and friendly and we were seated and fed in record timing! Will definitely come back on my next trip to Richmond.

We decided to eat Thanksgiving out. We chose a traditional holiday dinner at Max’s.
Everything was DELICIOUS. Turkey was juicy and the side dishes were amazing. Incredibly fast courteous service earns this place 5 stars. We’ll be back next year 😀

Loved the location and ambiance. The food on the other hand was not great. We went for brunch and had an omelet that was very dry, potatoes were not freshly made and dry. Disappointing to go to a French restaurant for brunch and not have Croque Madame. Would like to see a more French menu for brunch.

This restaurant used to be really good. We went often. The service is still really good, but the food not so much. I doubt we will ever return.

The beginning was good. We were seated, and the staff seemed very friendly. We ordered a soup(my wife) and a salad (me) and our dinners. We were asked if we wanted the soup and salad to come out ahead of the dinner. We said “yes”. We wanted a nice, leisurely dinner with our granddaughter. The soup and salad came out within minutes. Before I took one bite of my salad, the dinners came out. We felt like we were in a fast food restaurant! Very disappointing!

We were heading to Hamilton and wanted to eat somewhere special. The food was delicious. We had the fish of the day, oysters, the beet salad and pomme frotes. The only negative feedback I would give is the molten cake wasn’t molten and it wasn’t warm enough. I love a gooey molten cake, and this one was much more solid and room temperature. The service was excellent as was the ambiance. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Medicore night from a restaurant we have frequented in the past, but have not visited for some time.
We started at the bar with happy hour specials: house bubbly and Manhattan; both were serviceable, which is to be expected with a deal. The bar has foregone the neon red chemistry concoction which is traditionally passed off as a cherry for black cherries reconstituted in spirits which was a nice touch. The bartenders however were smug and inattentive, openly chastising a trainee. Additionally, one should never have to ask for a menu when they first sit. We ordered pimento cheese, which tasted more like underwhelming cottage cheese with an orange hue mixed with mayo, and house chips smothered in something akin to old bay which overwhelmed, ironically, everything else.
We ordered a second round and shortly thereafter our table was ready. Our server was clearly annoyed that we already had libations. He was mostly absent from the floor except to attend to his only other table, of 6 women.
Escargot and bone marrow was a superb app, and the waterzooi was phenomenal. The short rib was a bovine atrocity. The kitchen would be better off serving bargain meat chuck roast cooked in an instaPot than the tough, fatty, under sauced, waste of acres of corn.
We will try one more time after this experience, a single instance a pattern does not make; however, RVA has too many choices to waste time and money on mediocrity.

Nice place good service ... chicken and waffle was average, chicken was dry and overcooked. Waffle was very good. Would try again, maybe just a bad day

College friends just catching up for brunch.
Granted, it wasn't super busy on a Tuesday night, but our experience at Max's on Broad was really great. There was a wide range of tastes in our table of 4, but all were able to find food and drink that met their needs. My fish was really good, the wine was great, too. It's a small thing, but the bread they served was especially tasty!

We went for dinner on a Saturday evening, we’re sat immediately. Our server was friendly and informative on the menu. The Duck and Gnocchi dishes were both delicious.

We visited during fall 2019 Restaurant Week on the second to last day. We had to ask our waiter for the restaurant week menu and he never explained anything about the menu. There were up charges on several of the items which we did not know about until we were given our bill.
The dessert offerings were definitely a disappointment. Unspectacular chocolate cookie with a dollop of cream and square of apple strudel with scoop of vanilla ice cream, also not especially tasty. No imagination put into these.
We visited four different restaurants during restaurant week and Max’s on Broad was at the bottom of our list. We had previously been told by friends to skip them, and sadly, we now know why😞.

Asked for a window-facing table as we were entertaining friends from the west coast; didn’t happen. Food was good but not the “wow” I have experienced at Max’s in the past.

My sister & I visited during Richmond Restaurant Week Fall 2019. Our meals from the Fixed Price menu were delicious and excellent value. The service was helpful and unobtrusive. The atmosphere reminded me of restaurants in Europe and we loved the background music. My only disappointment was the lack of an elevator to the upstairs dining area. However, there is plenty of cosy dining space downstairs.

First time. Great location. Love the upper level overlooking Maggie. Food was excellent and creative. Who knew Belgium food could be notable? Our server was great. Small, quiet, intimate, unrushed.

We have frequented Max's numerous times prior to shows at the REP Theatre. The trend has been down in the food and the prices have continued to go up. The salmon was very salty (2 of us had this and both were very salty) and the gnocchi was gummy and the egg was not runny that may have added some liquid

Everything was off.
My husband, my teen and I had dinner before a show at November Theater, which is practically next door. You can valet your car for dinner and the show. I like the ease of this arrangement.
I started off with a specialty drink, lime something. It was refreshing and bright. I would have liked it even better had it been a hot day. We didn’t get appetizers, but our wait brought us warm bread and herb butter. Wow! Lightly crispy crust & soft warm moist inside-we devoured it. We didn’t dare get more ( although asked) because we would have ruined our appetites. I read once that one can predict the quality of the food to come by the pre dinner bread that’s served, and I’ve found that to be true. Our meals were tasty, prepared well and delivered right off the stove. I had the mussels [appetizer] with crab and lobster cream sauce and a small salad with balsamic dressing as my entree. Teen got a filet mignon encrusted with blue cheese--nicely seared but tender and red inside- served atop mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. I was surprised my teen ate everything on her plate! My mussels were cooked perfectly, and the crab and lobster sauce was a nice accompaniment. Toasted bread slices were served on the side for absorbing the delectable sauce. Hubby had the NY strip which was delicious. Obviously Max’s uses high quality meat. I enjoyed tasting the different flavors of the NY strip and the filet. We three shared a strawberry cheesecake slice & I had an espresso. It was a nice finish to the meal, although I prefer a graham cracker crust on my cheesecake.
Our waiter was perfect. She was attentive at all times without being obtrusive or interrupting. She checked on us once while I was holding my hair off my neck (hot flash). She brought me a tall glass of ice cubes and a cloth. Holding the glass against my neck helped sooo much. Sweet relief! I don’t recall her name, but she said she was relatively new to rva. She was petite with long blonde hair pulled up in a ponytail.
