Max - Tribeca Ratings and Reviews
Some of the best Italian I've ever had was here at Max-Tribeca. My penne pasta paired perfectly with my wine, which our server let us try a few, the ambience was calming with dim lighting making for a more intimate evening. The service here was spectacular, our meal did not come until after our appetizer was finished, and I could tell our meal was prepped with perfect timing along side our appetizer.
A fan favorite for me and my friends for casual dinners, special occasions, and everything in between. Joined for pre-celebration dinner on New Year's Eve (the second year in a row) and we all agreed it was the perfect spot to start our evening. Solid meal (as usual), charming atmosphere (without feeling upscale or too casual), and good vibe (without being too quiet or too loud). Always feels like a well-thought out spot that never disappoints.
It is a small place and due to the large party that were seated directly above everyone in the rest of the dining room it was very loud and difficult to talk without shouting. The restaurant needs to think about limiting larger groups or placement of larger groups as this impacted the overall experience. Our waiter and the service was rushed, quick, not they seemed to lack refinement and knowledge of how to treat patrons in NYC. It is a cozy, affordable place with solid food but after that experience I am not sure I will return. The food is solid but not fantastic if the service and atmosphere is lousy.
This place was the worst restaurant that I have ever dined at. The food tasted like my children’s canned spaghetti O’s or canned ravioli; it was supposed to be Lasagne. The service was poor. I went because of the food networks recommendation, however I will never eat here again
Nice and quiet, except there was one group below who had a rather loud dining guest. Since the place has high ceilings, her voice carried very very far.
Food was okay, but the service was excellent. I’d go back. I probably wouldn’t order the same dish again (squid ink pasta with shrimp in a spicy tomato sauce). It was weirdly dry for a pasta, but the eggplant parm looked amazing.
Tiny, but good for groups and would probably make a great date spot.
To note, we went on Thursday night at 8 PM for a group of 8.
👎🏻The restaurant used to be really nice until they brought this horrible woman who will seat you anywhere except where you want to seat. I am sure it will come to haunt them we are no longer going there or ordering from them, wrote bad reviews on a number of sites and told everyone we know about it. Used to be a bunch of really nice guys relaxed, good food and nice atmosphere but with this woman on board it's not the same
We love this restaurant. But this time even we had a reservation through Open table they said they won't seat me till my the other party comes and told me to wait outside, that was a chilly night. It was a busy night and we were taken to upper section of the restaurant and it was a way noisy, no way to make a conversation.
The foods were excellent.
Max never disappoints! We try to have dinner here every time we are in the city and it is always consistent, and amazing! The lasagna and fettuccine with meat sauce are our go-to's. This time we tried the meatballs for an appetizer and they were fantastic. The Ceasar salad may be the best ever!
Great for a group of 15 coworkers: there was something for everyone including the folks with various dietary restrictions. The food was fantastic! We had the meatballs and roasted eggplant to start (both were crowd pleasers), and I had the porcini ravioli for my entree (delicate and delicious). It is also affordable, which is a huge plus in this neighborhood.
Great food. Had large portions but the prices were kind of high. I guess for downtown it makes sense. We ordered multiple pasta dishes + burrata + fried calamari as apps. Everyone loved their food. I loved my Penne a la Vodka with Chicken. Ravioli with truffle oil was great. Pasta was cooked perfectly. The table for 7 of us was kind of tight but we managed. Definitely recommend as a nice dinner spot!
Five of us met at Max in anticipation of a lovely dinner. Instead, the Management's attitude turned the evening into a very disappointing experience. To sum it up, when we tasted the wine, we told the waiter it had a cardboard/turned taste. The poor waiter couldn't simply take it back and replace it with a different bottle. He had to check with his manager who claimed that the wine was fine - and that was how it was supposed to taste. The manager let us sample a different bottle of the same type of wine and everyone agreed the second bottle was fine. But he wouldn't give us that one- he complained he would lose money if we didn't drink the first bottle. We stayed for our meal only because there were 5 of us on a busy Thursday night in Tribeca and we weren't sure we'd find another place to accommodate us.
The food was average at best.
I thought that when we got the bill we would find that the manager would have at least comp us something for the bad bottle of wine.....but he didn't!
With all the other options there are in Tribeca, that are hopefully interested in satisfying and retaining their customers, I suggest you go someplace else.
Service was great and Max's has a decent inexpensive wine options for NYC. Pasta dishes were okay. Wife had spinach and ricotta ravioli special -- she didn't finish and the portions weren't big. I had the lasagna -- I didn't finish either and again portion wasn't that big it just wasn't anything special. The food was as good as anything I'd get at an Italian chain restaurant -- it just wasn't special enough to want to come back or to recommend to a friend looking for a really good Italian place in NYC.
We had a 6pm reservation on a Saturday night. (I had made the reservation a month in advance.) A few days before, when changing the number of people over the phone, I was told that we'd have to be out by 7:45pm for the next reservation. That wasn't a problem. From the moment we arrived we were told we'd have to be out by 7:30pm. This was told to us over and over. What it felt like was that the other reservation was very important and we were unimportant and needed to be rushed out. Especially when tallying up the check (two of the group insisted on only paying for what they ate instead of us splitting the check evenly, which is what our group usually does) which took more time than usual. Also, I ordered the eggplant with spaghetti and received the rigatoni with eggplant pieces. I couldn't send it back because we were being rushed out. The restaurant is very small so I understand why diners can't linger but I've never been pushed out (and repeatedly reminded that we had to leave at a certain time) like that before.
