Max Gill and Grill Ratings and Reviews
Food was good as always. Service was very disappointing. Young man was totally overwhelmed and out of his element. Very busy and he was obviously not trained well and/or not suited to be a server.
Manager came over and apologized. They took 50% off the bill so they acknowledged the unfortunate experience. Just not the birthday celebration we had hoped for.
Food has always been excellent and will return.
Overall everything was great. We made it for the tail end of happy hour and made use of their happy hour food and drink specials. The lobster flatbread, mussels and clams were all very good. My dad and I shared a lobster roll which was delicious, and my dad is hard to impress but he loved the lobster roll. Uncle enjoyed the wings, the lobster macaroni and cheese was well enjoyed by the friend that ordered it, and even the shrimp etoufee and fish tacos was a hit. This place is a long term favorite of mine that I’ll continue to return to
Went on a Wednesday night and it was pretty busy (wings special). We ordered the crab dip appetizer and weren't too thrilled. Needed something else to eat with the dip (chips?) but the flavor was not all that great so wouldn't recommend it. Ordered the chicken/lobster and it was tasty along with the risotto. Date ordered a tilapia special that was drowning in crab sauce. Service was slow, server had to come back to get our drink order because he forgot it and didn't write it down. He wrote it down when he came back though. They packaged up my leftovers but did not put my leftover risotto in the box! I mentioned this to the server and he brought me a small container of it. We ordered a cold dessert, which took a long time to get and then a bit longer to even get our check. We had not been here in a long time but it'll be a while before we go back. Plenty of other places with better service/experience.
WAITRESS TRIED TO SEAT US IN A TINY TABLE SQUEEZED IN NEXT TO THE FIREPLACE. I COULDNT FIT THERE. WE ENDED UP AT A 6 PERSON BOOTH NEXT TO THE BAR. WAY TO BIG. ILL ASK FOR A LARGER TABLE NEXT TIME SO THE WAIT STAFF DOESNT GET SCREWED SERVING 2 AT A 6 TABLE.. EVERYTHING WAS VERY NICE.
What a great restaurant! It’s New Years Eve, the ambience was perfect and the service was excellent. Our waiter Josh had an awesome sense of humor and made great meal suggestions. The food was outstanding the girls had surf and turf, my son had the shrimp and seafood linguine and I had the Colorado lamb! Great meal, great location and outstanding service!!
Our waiter was the best. I believe his name was Josh and he was so accomodating. He did mention he has worked there for a while and I can see why. Our first order of oysters came out smelling strongly with a fishy smell. He was great. Spoke to the manager and had us a new order of different delicious oysters in no time at all. We have eaten here many times and will be back again.
I've gone to Max's (and Hemingway's) for years. This visit was disappointing. The calamari was inedible...cold and mushy. Fish tacos were just okay. We were in the back and a very loud company party was going on right behind us. With so many great new restaurants in Denver, it will be tough to go back.
Great friendly and quick service. Happy hour Oysters a real bargain and delicious. Everything else so far also good, but mostly eat oysters and appetizers so can't comment on entrees YET; but plan to try fish entrees next time. Crab cakes and clams very good, but don't bother with the lobster flat bread--just a small square pizza with very little lobster on it. I highly recommend this restaurant!!
We have never been disappointed eating at Max's, whether it was just my wife and I, or with children and grandchildren. The waitstaff have always made us feel very comfortable and provided outstanding service. The food has always been very tasty, and affordable.
We live close by but had never stopped in to try this place, and now I am glad that we made the trip. I loved the ambiance and feel of the restaurant, it was cozy and chic at the same time. A bonus to what really matters, the food was delicious. I got the fish special and my boyfriend got a steak. Both of us were more than happy with the portions we received and the yumminess of the food. We will be going back for sure. One last rave: the happy hour goes to 6:30, which for someone who can never make the usual 6:00 cut-off at other restaurants is fantastic.
We shared a shrimp appetizer...6 lg shrimp for $11...they were fine. My husband had the shrimp ettoufe and he said it was good. I had the ciopino...i was disappointed. 1 clam, 4 little mussels, 4 shrimp, two baby lobster tails, no calamari and one small piece of bread..the broth was actually the liquid from a can of tomatoes...no other seasoning .this was $25.....i have had this dish here before and this was.a real disappointment.
Food is amazingly fresh and have never been disappointed with anything that we order. Service this time wasnt as good as it usually is due to an inattentive waiter who complained about having to use a tablet to check people out at the table and it how it affects his tips, but the service is usually top notch every other time we've been there.
Order took 40+ minutes after ordering to come out and the server didn’t keep us abreast of the timing .
We had to ask for the salads and she seem d surprised they hadn’t come out yet.
The server seemed new or just uninformed. We asked if you had sparkling water and she had no idea what that was.
So sad as I’ve loved the restaurant for years and several friends have felt the service and food is suffering.
Hope this helps.
My wife and I have dined at Max Gill and Grill many times before in the past and have enjoyed it very much. The chicken chopped salad has always been very special. Good size portion, corn bread croutons, etc. Not so this time! Small portion, no croutons, not sure the salad had everything mentioned in the menu, nothing special and certainly not worth $16. I had the "large" crab cake sandwich. Here again, small portion, nothing special, and not worth $18. The waitress was very nice. We were very disappointed in the meal and we're not planning on returning very soon.
We were staying in Denver for a vacation and we so pleased to find Max Gill & Grill on open table. Food and service was excellent. It is a sports bar so some areas were very loud, but the restaurant accommodated is by sitting us in a section so we could have a good conversation with our family.
I have been coming here for years and have always loved my meals. However, this time I ordered the $27 scallops and was disappointed. For that price I expect perfectly cooked seafood. What I got was overcooked, quite chewy scallops. My friend also ordered that dish and could not finish them for fear of choking on them. Had there been more than 3 scallops on my plate, I would have sent them back. But I didn't bother.
We have eaten here many times over the years and have never been disappointed .
This time not only was the food excellent, we also sat at the front window and were continuously entertained by the straw witch with the basket of candy and the curious passers by :)
Had a great first meal at Max Gill and Grill. We had Oysters & King Crab and the Surf & Turf and other than the lobster being slightly overcooked it was fantastic. My 6 year old got a great piece of Salmon w/ some french fries off the kids menu and it was one of the best kid's meals I've seen in terms of quality food. All in all a good find and will be back.
Our waitress did not do a good job at explaining the menu. My fiancé and I ordered the calamari grilled and it came out like a steak. My girl friend order the breakfast sandwich and it came out on a hamburger bun and the menu you read a croissant. The manager was super unhelpful and just said that they had ran out of croissants which is why the kitchen used a bun something else our waiter did not tell us.
Overall it was over priced and the food was horrible.
Planned a special birthday celebration flying in from Indianapolis because we had a great experience here several years ago. Unfortunately, except for our excellent server Brittany, the experience was less than stellar starting with tiny wobbly table in corner to bad fish / overcooked risotto selection chosen by birthday boy. Mgr. Steven did come over and talk to us, comping 2nd meal, but we were disappointed with this visit. When in Denver again, we will still try Max's again in hopes of a better meal. The ribs are always a good choice.
