Max Gill and Grill Ratings and Reviews
For some reason, despite Denver's size and recent growth it is difficult to find good quality seafood without having to go high-carb, high-brow, or high-dollar. Does everything here have to be about the "high"?

Food - A (Just go and see for yourself)
Service - A (They care; went out of the way to enhance the experience)
Ease of Experience - A minus (parking)
I tried Max Gill & Grill for the first time since moving to Denver almost one year ago. The food was great in terms of flavor and presentation, service was prompt and friendly, and the atmosphere was inviting and relaxing. Couple the experience with the walkability of Gaylord Street and the quaint Wash Park location and you have a solid overall experience. I will definitely be returning again.
Another great experience at Max, this time Valentines day. We had a smorgasbord of items and beverages. I had a couple beers and my sweet significant other had a couple Manhattans with the real Jerrys. We had oysters, mussels, shrimp étouffée, and lots of different flavored wings. Emily our server was fantastic and attentive, even though the place was quite busy. Next time we will investigate their tiki bar in the back!
1st time to Gill and Grill. Made reservations on open table and as requested table was by the fireplace, ready when we requested and we had great service A+! We will be back soon. Only problem was finding parking at 5 p.m. but they offer free valet.
Food selection good, on time and very tasty. Really enjoyed! Happy 31st Jackie Barlock (my daughter)
I loved the ambiance but I thought the food and service were just average. We had the blue crab dip and clam chowder soup and it was nothing special. Disappointed in the service too. Had to ask multiple times for more bread, water, and the waitress forgot my salad which I then decided to forego. Would come back for drinks and try the raw bar - but probably not for food.
We usually go to Washington Park Grille when we go to a restaurant over on South Gaylord, but my husband and I have been wanting to try Max Gill and Grill for a long time. The atmosphere in the front dining room was very nice. There was a fire going which made the small room seem very comfortable and intimate. The service was prompt and friendly. I started with the soup special which was a tomato basil. It was delicious and hot. So many restaurants serve cold soup these days. My husband ordered the calamari. Unfortunately, it came out very soggy. We should have returned it. I ordered one of the specials for the night which was a Marlin Marsala. The marlin was cooked perfectly. The mushroom sauce was a little thicker than I like, but overall a nice dish. My husband said his short rib pasta was good. The pasta was cooked perfectly, but the short ribs were a little fatty. The creme brulee that evening was a chai, cappucino. It had a very interesting flavor. I really liked it. The wine list actually has some reasonably priced wines on the menu. Overall, a nice experience and we will go back.
Food was good as always. Service was very disappointing. Young man was totally overwhelmed and out of his element. Very busy and he was obviously not trained well and/or not suited to be a server.
Manager came over and apologized. They took 50% off the bill so they acknowledged the unfortunate experience. Just not the birthday celebration we had hoped for.
Food has always been excellent and will return.
Overall everything was great. We made it for the tail end of happy hour and made use of their happy hour food and drink specials. The lobster flatbread, mussels and clams were all very good. My dad and I shared a lobster roll which was delicious, and my dad is hard to impress but he loved the lobster roll. Uncle enjoyed the wings, the lobster macaroni and cheese was well enjoyed by the friend that ordered it, and even the shrimp etoufee and fish tacos was a hit. This place is a long term favorite of mine that I’ll continue to return to
Went on a Wednesday night and it was pretty busy (wings special). We ordered the crab dip appetizer and weren't too thrilled. Needed something else to eat with the dip (chips?) but the flavor was not all that great so wouldn't recommend it. Ordered the chicken/lobster and it was tasty along with the risotto. Date ordered a tilapia special that was drowning in crab sauce. Service was slow, server had to come back to get our drink order because he forgot it and didn't write it down. He wrote it down when he came back though. They packaged up my leftovers but did not put my leftover risotto in the box! I mentioned this to the server and he brought me a small container of it. We ordered a cold dessert, which took a long time to get and then a bit longer to even get our check. We had not been here in a long time but it'll be a while before we go back. Plenty of other places with better service/experience.
WAITRESS TRIED TO SEAT US IN A TINY TABLE SQUEEZED IN NEXT TO THE FIREPLACE. I COULDNT FIT THERE. WE ENDED UP AT A 6 PERSON BOOTH NEXT TO THE BAR. WAY TO BIG. ILL ASK FOR A LARGER TABLE NEXT TIME SO THE WAIT STAFF DOESNT GET SCREWED SERVING 2 AT A 6 TABLE.. EVERYTHING WAS VERY NICE.
What a great restaurant! It’s New Years Eve, the ambience was perfect and the service was excellent. Our waiter Josh had an awesome sense of humor and made great meal suggestions. The food was outstanding the girls had surf and turf, my son had the shrimp and seafood linguine and I had the Colorado lamb! Great meal, great location and outstanding service!!
Our waiter was the best. I believe his name was Josh and he was so accomodating. He did mention he has worked there for a while and I can see why. Our first order of oysters came out smelling strongly with a fishy smell. He was great. Spoke to the manager and had us a new order of different delicious oysters in no time at all. We have eaten here many times and will be back again.
I've gone to Max's (and Hemingway's) for years. This visit was disappointing. The calamari was inedible...cold and mushy. Fish tacos were just okay. We were in the back and a very loud company party was going on right behind us. With so many great new restaurants in Denver, it will be tough to go back.
Great friendly and quick service. Happy hour Oysters a real bargain and delicious. Everything else so far also good, but mostly eat oysters and appetizers so can't comment on entrees YET; but plan to try fish entrees next time. Crab cakes and clams very good, but don't bother with the lobster flat bread--just a small square pizza with very little lobster on it. I highly recommend this restaurant!!
We have never been disappointed eating at Max's, whether it was just my wife and I, or with children and grandchildren. The waitstaff have always made us feel very comfortable and provided outstanding service. The food has always been very tasty, and affordable.
We live close by but had never stopped in to try this place, and now I am glad that we made the trip. I loved the ambiance and feel of the restaurant, it was cozy and chic at the same time. A bonus to what really matters, the food was delicious. I got the fish special and my boyfriend got a steak. Both of us were more than happy with the portions we received and the yumminess of the food. We will be going back for sure. One last rave: the happy hour goes to 6:30, which for someone who can never make the usual 6:00 cut-off at other restaurants is fantastic.
We shared a shrimp appetizer...6 lg shrimp for $11...they were fine. My husband had the shrimp ettoufe and he said it was good. I had the ciopino...i was disappointed. 1 clam, 4 little mussels, 4 shrimp, two baby lobster tails, no calamari and one small piece of bread..the broth was actually the liquid from a can of tomatoes...no other seasoning .this was $25.....i have had this dish here before and this was.a real disappointment.
