One member of party has a gluten intolerance. The wait staff and the kitchen were very knowledgeable about which items contain gluten, and were very accommodating even with the dessert. The food pairings were not to our liking (I.e. Fish with just vegetables, no starch). Would be better if there was more of balance.
This is a long time favorite restaurant of ours. In all respects they do a great job. Hartford is lucky to have a restaurant of this quality and consistency.
Reservation was for 7:15pm on a Wednesday... didn’t get seated until 8pm after going back to the hostess. They did try to accommodate for the delay with a jumbo shrimp cocktail. Waiter was great however food and beverages took longer than necessary to receive. Lastly, I thought I was bleeding, but it turned out to be either blood or syrup in the edge of the table. Extremely concerning either way and very disappointing.
Excellent but miss the tablecloths which were more upscale and helped to control the noise level.
Best Cobb salad with shrimp anywhere!
Everything was just as you would want it to be. Perfect food and drinks, elegantly and unpretentiously served
Excellent place for a great meal and drinks. The service was great and the staff was pleasant and so knowledgeable.
Food was good but not amazing - not worth what we payed for. Disapointed - we prefer Max Fish
It got extremely warm & they were very slow into making the dining room comfortable
We were there to celebrate my friend‘s birthday. They made an appropriately big deal of it—including delivering a beautiful piece of New York style cheesecake with a lit candle and Happy Birthday written on the plate. (A shout out to the Parker House rolls as the most delicious I’ve ever eaten.) Max’s never disappoints.
We love Max downtown for a special occasion. Everything was perfect our waitress Brittany was delightful. Have never had anything but a great meal there.
Fabulous dinner. Best steak we ever had. Cooked perfectly. Class joint, class folks, from the moment we walked in, anyone who touched us was extremely hospitable.
Can't wait to return.
The old saying goes if it’s not broken don’t fix it. The Original Decour for they renovated was much better and inviting. It made you feel like you were at a nice elegant restaurant however now it’s more casual steakhouse. The food is consistent however the menu has change so much that it’s not like it was before. I still suggest anyone going to this restaurant and experience in it however for people like us that dined there for many years miss the old Max downtown
Convenient to the Goodwin Hotel where we were staying. Very good food. Great service except when the hostess disappeared and we had wait to wait for her to reappear to get our coats. Not inexpensive. Bar looked like it might be nice.
The food was delicious and our server was amazing. He gave us a ton of attention and was very knowledgeable about the wine list.
This restaurant has it all —- great atmosphere, wonderful food, and perfect service!
Although we dine out often this is one of the best meals ever! We have eaten at Man downtown before and at other Max places. But on this night we chose the let the us choose selection. We spent a wonderful night eating and drinking as the staff lavished us not only with amazing food, world class time pairings but also great fun information of what we were being served. This was the best meal ever! Our waiter Chris was terrific as was Jesse Lang our sommelier for the evening whom took our wine pallets on an amazing adventure.
The service was impeccable as always. They made my 5 year old feel extra special on his bday! The good was great. The Hangar steak was not as good as the usual steaks but it is still definitely one of the best places to dine in Hartford hands down! We will definitely be back!
Easter dinner was excellent.
See private note.
Love it !!
A must-dine while in Hartford! We started with the Buffalo Cauliflower and it was an incredible crispy substitute for buffalo wings. I ordered the fish special and it was cooked perfectly. We were given a hint that the Sticky Toffee Pudding is well worth ordering and it was fantastic. Excellent service, food quality and creative preparation make this worth the detour to downtown Hartford.
Server was excellent and helped us with our dietary restrictions.
Food, cocktails and service excellent. Noise levels by the bar high at happy hour, but sitting away from the bar was fine!
We had a wonderful dinner at Max Downtown with impeccable service. The prime rib was perfectly cooked and the sole was delicious. After now being used to the new decor, after an extensive renovation last year, I can appreciate why ownership decided to make the changes. The restaurant was filled, on a Wednesday evening, with a great mixture of millennials and those “longer in the tooth.”
Steven Abrams is still the consummate host, and the staff follows his lead.
Overall the experience was good. We arrived early for our reservation and opted for seats at the bar so we could watch basketball. We were seated near the service area of the bar. It was a busy Saturday night and that area of the bar was distracting and the service was slow. We asked the manager for a wine recommendation in a certain price range. The wine he chose was higher priced and we were not aware of that until we received the check. Big fans of all the Max restaurants and will return.
As always, great food. Service was exceptional. Remains our family’s top pick for the area.
Great food! A little pricy but great place for that special occasion.
Great service- Great food- everyone in on the great service
You deserve it. Have a great dinner with beauty, and taste!!
My wife and i had a great meal on St Patrick's Day. Can't say enough about the food and service. Besides that it's just a great atmosphere that the Max people have created here and at all their restaurants. If you get down to the West Palm area, try The Cooper!
Always a fun time. Max’s team always make sure they treat their guests perfectly. The new renovations were nice but not spectacular. With that said, there was nothing wrong prior to the renovations.
Terrific food, wine, and service.
The staff was excellent and was only surpassed by the food
One of the best meals and birthday celebrations I have been apart of.
Let me start by saying the service was excellent; ambiance was nice but a bit loud. Value is where things became disappointing. While our food was very good, it was very, very expensive. Sides are enough to share vs. the guidance of individual servings. Salads could also have been split. I hate to waste food and salads don’t last as leftovers. The kicker was the cost of the bone-in filet -excessively expensive and was not worth the price. We are HUGE fans of the Max Restaurants and will continue to support them.
The food was very good. The staff, from valet to reception to waitstaff was friendly, although waitstaff could have been a bit more attentive.
The big issues were:
The restaurant was cold. My party of three contained a 65 year old, a 70 year old and a 29 year old. We were all freezing. We asked for more heat, and we got a little, but it was still cold.
The background music was totally inappropriate. It was modern pop. I actually like some of the music which was played, but not appropriate for that venue.
The room seems sterile. A bit of warmth would be welcome. I realize that a portion of my objections are specific to me, and may not be a problem for most people. But I would not return.
We enjoyed a cocktail at the bar since we were early for reservation; Chris, our server was great, attentive, familiar with the dishes-
We really thought the background music was too loud and a noisy selection of soft rock- smooth jazz would be much nicer and more suitable for dinner and dinner conversation.
Crudo -- OK, but unremarkable and a bit skimpy.
Roasted beet salad -- Excellent
Duck breast + confit -- excellent, particularly the duck breat
Hanger steak/frites -- tasted even better than rib & sirloin steaks here. A nice surprise!
Service very pleasant, and not impatient or overbearing
We drank 2011 Tablas Creek Panoplie, which is not on the winelist.
To me, good wine choices (on the Max winelist) are overly pricey.
It seems to us that when you eat here you can predictably rely on an excellent meal, more so than at most restaurants costing a bit more to much more in NYC.
Everything was fantastic including our server, Tom.
The tables for two were a little cramped but again besides that everything perfect
