About Max Downtown
If ever there were a showplace for dining in Hartford, it is Max Downtown.
Situated as the centerpiece of Hartford’s downtown business center, it has been guided to preeminence by owners Richard Rosenthal and Steve Abrams.
Providing outstanding dining, service and atmosphere, Max Downtown offers a trend-setting atmosphere for more than 300 patrons daily. It has earned a 25 or “excellent” from Zagat’s Survey, a “Best New Restaurant” from Connecticut Magazine, more than six Reader’s Choice awards from Connecticut Magazine and 4-stars from The Hartford Courant’s Northeast Magazine.
Internationally inspired dishes and other regional and traditional fare create a menu unlike any other in Connecticut. “It’s more than a Classic Chop House,” says Rosenthal. "We create dishes for people with a passion for dining.”

Max Downtown Ratings and Reviews
Great food and the server was outstanding. My biggest issue with our reservation was they tried to sit us at the table right by the door, hostess stand and bar. That is a terrible table. Loud from the bar and drafty by the door. We refused the table and they gave us a different one which was quiet for my 87 yr old mother
We wanted to try the newly renovated restaurant and were happy with the new décor. It’s a solid restaurant, the food is consistently good yet there were things that struck me as odd. The place felt more crowded physically so the noise level was higher than I remembered. We were seated in an aisle section and initially my husband was continually knocked by the chair behind him so we pulled the table closer to the bench. We sat very close to the diners next to us with only about six to eight inches separating the table. Hardly intimate. The food was good - as usual the raw shellfish was wonderful and so fresh. But I wanted something simple for dinner and ordered from that section of the menu. I ordered the scallops but only got one side with that. If I wanted two, I would have been asked to pay extra for that. My dinner consisted of three sea scallops and mashed potatoes. That seemed incredibly skimpy to me. My husband ordered the pork and that came with two vegetables. Again – the food is good but for the price we ended up paying I cannot honestly say I’d recommend the place. I would say it will no longer be one of my first choices. We dine in Hartford regularly because we attend the stage and the Bushnell. Fortunately, there are plenty of other options.
A 35 minute wait for a reservation, one main course food order never came and had to be reordered, we were 40 minutes late for a new years concert ( told maitre de of our plans) as a result. No comp, no apology, the only thing good about the experience was our waiter. If there is a reply from management that states " we strive to please our
guests in every way" or some other PR fluff, you should have recognized this last night while we were at your facility. Life is about creating memories, so I created some joy for my wife and myself despite the "customer service" we received .
We have come to Max’s Hartford many times. Whether it be alone, with friends or a nice dinner with family, we always have a great time.
The food is fantastic, And the service is top notch. Thomas is absolutely amazing, friendly, engaging & professional. Whenever we make reservations, we request That Thomas be our server and know that it will be another great night at Max’s. The restaurant is amazing,, warm & friendly... but Thomas (and the wine of course), keep us coming back.
I took my husband for a birthday dinner. Our reservation was ready when we arrived a bit early, but they happily held our table while we enjoyed a pre-dinner drink at the bar. The staff was all very friendly, the raw bar and our steaks were delicious. We love Max restaurants, and will come back to Downtown.
My wife and I have a long tradition of having Christmas Eve dinner at Max Downtown. This was our first visit since their interior renovation and we were very pleased that the interior was still comfortable and elegant. (The only thing I'd mention is that we all thought the new chairs, while comfortable) seemed low to all of us.) Service, as always, was prompt and courteous and the menu items and specials were all interesting and flavorful. We hope to be able to continue our tradition for many years to come.
Everyone's selections was delicious!! The bread and butter was a nice touch. The Shrimp were gigantic!! Very flavorful food. One of us didn't get our side dish but they more than made up for it by offering everyone a dessert!! They were incredible!! Thanks for a memorable lunch!!
The remodel is tasteful. Seemingly no changes to the layout, but it’s updated and has new decor. The wine loft is now visible from the dining room and looks very cool. In general however, the changes don’t seem to warrant the amount of time this restaurant closed the doors for remodeling. Or it’s hard to tell.
We had the tasting, which was wonderful and the service was spot on as always. We did have trouble finding a reasonably priced wine, so went to our go-to Max Cuvée. A lack of full bodied red selection on the menu under $100 was nonetheless disappointing.
Our first visit since the renovation and we were not disappointed. The new format (as a chophouse) resulted in a complicated menu. Essentially, we were overwhelmed by the options! This is actually a good thing although it made it hard to choose. One of us had the basic seafood option and the other had the basic steakhouse option. Both were wonderful - precisely cooked and seasoned. We had a great table near what's kind of an "open kitchen" for the pastry chef. Quite entertaining!
Marvelous Max Downtown!!! The renovations are spectacular. The food is fantastic. The service is sensational! Max Downtown has the best reputation and it t is well deserved! It is THE restaurant against which all other fine dining restaurants in the greater metro area are judged! If you haven’t yet experienced dining here... do it as soon as you can. Happy Holidays!!!
The Max group seems to always have just the right formula. Their newly renovated downtown Hartford space is beautiful. The service is friendly and the servers are knowledgeable. Our lamb merguaze (sp) appetizer was very good. We tried the short rib, sirloin, salmon & shrimp entrees. All were flavorful, cooked well and nicely presented. It's worth the price for your "big city" experience.
Service was Great!!! Very friendly staff and knowledgeable. Nice ambience.
2 dinners were excellent, two were not...
They try to do too much. Great cuts of beef, but sauces and marinades alter the natural taste. No need. Everyone loves a good steak or prime rib. Pastrami and prime rib combo?
Baked Alaska not baked! Shouldn’t offer if need to take shortcuts. Very pricey. All in all... it was a fun evening but probably won’t be back or recommend... maybe just for drinks.
We go to this rest restaurant about 3 to 4 times a year and normally her quite pleased. However on December 7 the place was overcrowded and the service And he wait staff overstretched. Our waitress came up and apologized for the lack of attention at least three times. When our wine order was finally delivered we had already eaten our appetizers salads. It was also was two years younger than the vintage I had ordered which happens in many restaurants. It took at least another 10 minutes for a replacement bottle to be delivered. However after the first pour no one bothered to comeback to refill our glasses. Bottom line we felt ignored. Not good for a restaurant the charges this kind of money.
I m from Napa,California and when back east for my business, Max s is the best. A halfway point for me to meet with business partners from Boston when in NYC. I have had this lunch meeting at least half a dozen times over the past few years and never been disappointed. The atmosphere is perfect for this type of meeting, the food awesome, and the service wonderful! Thank you all at Max s 👍😀
