Situated as the centerpiece of Hartford’s downtown business center, it has been guided to preeminence by owners Richard Rosenthal and Steve Abrams.
Providing outstanding dining, service and atmosphere, Max Downtown offers a trend-setting atmosphere for more than 300 patrons daily. It has earned a 25 or “excellent” from Zagat’s Survey, a “Best New Restaurant” from Connecticut Magazine, more than six Reader’s Choice awards from Connecticut Magazine and 4-stars from The Hartford Courant’s Northeast Magazine.
Internationally inspired dishes and other regional and traditional fare create a menu unlike any other in Connecticut. “It’s more than a Classic Chop House,” says Rosenthal. "We create dishes for people with a passion for dining.”
Our server was so nice and personable. Food was excellent.
Great food, vibe, and staff!! Can't wait to go back!
Food always rocks
Diana is great
Valentines day preset meal was worth the wait. Our server Rob was the perfect addition to the service one expects from a Max restaurant.
Max Downtown is wonderful! From the hostess, to the bar area, to the service and food. The staff goes above and beyond for their customers. We always have a great meal and not one complaint. Max's knows how to serve the perfect meal with the greatest staff!
From service, ambiance to a special valentine menu the food and cocktails, Everything was wonderful.
Always a great evening at Max Downtown. Food and service are always wonderful.
Genius to do a prix fixe menu for Valentines Day. Excellent selection for each course and everything was delicious!
Superb! The gold standard in CT. The service was impeccable and the food - including the desserts - were inspired.
I took a client out to lunch after a business meeting. As usual, I had a very good dining experience.
FOOD ALWAYS OUTSTANDING A little slow on game Night Will always return !!
My wife and I joined two other couples for a pre-Valentine's Day dinner at Max Downtown, since several of us would be out of town on Valentine's Day. Our waiter was delightful, attentive with a light touch of humor. He accommodated each guest's idiosyncrasy without hesitation. The kitchen delivered everyone's meal just as they requested. I enjoyed the shaved cauliflower salad for an appetizer and the bone-in veal chop special for an entree, both excellent. Having unanimously declined coffee and desert, our waiter surprised us with tiramisu and baked Alaska to share. Not so surprisingly, they soon disappeared.
Max Downtown remains one the premier restaurants in central Connecticut.
Was supposed to be a great dinner for my 40th Birthday. We were put in the back room behind the bar which is like a closet. You are practically sitting on top of the table next to you and you can hear their conversations. If they are loud it’s difficult to have your own.
The service was however great. They were very attentive and prompt.
The food and menu was not good. Apparently the chef has changed the menu and the plating. The dinner rolls were awful. It’s was a potato roll with asagio cheese, warmed. The nice fresh bread was SO MUCH better. The portion size of the chopped salad is very small mad to look large because it is put in a wide rimmed bowl. Also not chopped small like it used to be.
The main course is now served in a cast iron pan. Horrible. No where to put your side dishes. How are you suppose to eat the sides? Out of those bowls? Strange. The steak is now sliced for you in this pan. When I order a 6, 8, 10 oz steak I want to see my portion size. How do I know that I didn’t just pay $50 for a steak and you just platted half for me and half for the next guy and I’m out my steak and money.
Max downtown has been my favorite restaurant for at least 20 years. It will now take a lot of convincing for me to go back.
Max Downtown is the nicest restaurant in the Hartford area. Great food, nice bar, good downtown location. What can be a miss though, is the server. My last server - Patrick - was in such a hurry with his other tables that since it was just my wife and I and we're low maintenance we received little attention. A bummer. We'll be back but maybe just not as often anymore.
Went with our daughter and husband for a great evening
Did not disappoint as expected
Best rib eye I've ever had
Drinks were great had the absolutely best dessert ever Bsked Alaska....will come back just for that
I have been here many times but tonight was really average at a very above average price. I have high expectations for Max Downtown and they were not met. Salad, appetizers and cocktails were brought out almost simultaneously. I felt like we were being rushed when I made it clear to our server we were in no rush. The entrees were ok and the desert, a basic creme brûlée’ was terrible. This was probably my last time to the restaurant.
Amazing food and ambience. It’s a little pricey but definitely perfect for special occasions like a special date night or birthday with a special someone
Best restaurant in Hartford county by far!!!!
It was okay. My filet was half burn, so was only able to eat half of it.
Scott at the bar was attentive and had excellent suggestions for wine. The sirloin was average and a bit tough for the high price. The setting and ambience was excellent
Incredibly professional with a elegant environment that I’d be happy to take my other back there again.
Excellent restaurant week menu. Delicious salad and dessert. Nice sword fish but sides more of a garnish than a side; also served a little too cool. Lovely server; very gracious. Always enjoy Max Downtown. Miss the Sunday evening jazz and wine bottle half price special.
I went to Max Downtown twice. My first experience was not what I expected, in fact quite a let down. I went back and was amazed! I purposefully ordered shrimp because i dislike shrimp, and Max Downtown really wowed me, the shrimp was amazing!!! The food was fantastic, staff were kind and professional. Very impressed, thank you Max Downtown... we will be back!!
Great newly refurbished restaurant. Good vibes from staff. Swordfish over cooked and dry. Other entrees , salads and desserts great.
As always, EXCELLENT!!!
Great service & atmosphere. Food was great. Can be a little loud and congested but a fun time.
The food was very good. They called on Saturday to confirm the reservation. During the call I told them that we had theatre tickets. We retold them that we had a show at 8:00 when our server introduced herself. Very slow with bar, coffee and dessert service. The desserts were all prepared for the Taste of Hartford and sitting on a counter but it took several times of asking before we all received them. Consequently we were late getting to the theatre. Luckily the show started late. The thoughtlessness of our server turned a nice evening into an unpleasant and stressful experience in the end.
My wife and I went to Max D before seeing a performance at the Bushnell. Our first time there. Overall, one of the best restaurant experiences we've had, not just in CT but overall. The swordfish was amazing and the service was outstanding from start to beginning. Server was fun, friendly, and professional, and ambience very pleasant. Would recommend in a heartbeat. Looking forward to returning with friends and family in tow. Keep up the good work and thanks for a wonderful dining experience.
The food was delicious, the service was acceptable, and the drinks were great!
We attended during restaurant week and enjoyed the food and ambience. Valet parking made it easy too. We definitely plan to come back for another delicious meal and great experience!!
Excellent. The food did take a little longer than usually to come out, but overall it was perfect!
The prime rib was way undercooked, cool and tasteless
Our server was attentive and pleasant. Food was delicious. Prime rib a little undercooked but delicious.
Great food and service. It's a little pricey though.
Great restaurant with outstanding food and service!
Food was good.....pretty standard fair, served well. The night we went, the prime rib was a little on the tough side. Everything else was very good. Wait staff was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about the food
We usually have fantastic service when dining here but this time our server was marginal at best. We also ordered the Taste of Hartford specials which were a good bargain but the food not as sharp as usual.
Decided to venture out to Max's Downtown in the midst of a snow storm to celebrate my wife's birthday. Needless to say it was worth fighting through the slush to make it there. We were placed (on my request) in a quieter section for a quiet and more intimate meal. The ambiance, set off by the swirling snow and old style Hartford buildings seen through the floor to ceiling windows, provided a beautiful backdrop to our dinner. The food was superb, the host/hostess were more than cordial, and our waiter was attentive and professional. Though the cost is more than your run of the mill corner restaurant, so is the food, service, and experience. 10/10 rating. My wife and I look forward to our next visit.
