About Max Downtown
If ever there were a showplace for dining in Hartford, it is Max Downtown.
Situated as the centerpiece of Hartford’s downtown business center, it has been guided to preeminence by owners Richard Rosenthal and Steve Abrams.
Providing outstanding dining, service and atmosphere, Max Downtown offers a trend-setting atmosphere for more than 300 patrons daily. It has earned a 25 or “excellent” from Zagat’s Survey, a “Best New Restaurant” from Connecticut Magazine, more than six Reader’s Choice awards from Connecticut Magazine and 4-stars from The Hartford Courant’s Northeast Magazine.
Internationally inspired dishes and other regional and traditional fare create a menu unlike any other in Connecticut. “It’s more than a Classic Chop House,” says Rosenthal. "We create dishes for people with a passion for dining.”

Max Downtown Ratings and Reviews
We came to Max Downtown for the first time on Saturday. Everything was going well...we had a phenomenal server, Melinda, who was really great at making suggestions and answering all of our questions. We had a bit of a problem when our steak came out and it was clearly (by look and taste) burnt/charred on the outside. I’m usually not one to complain about meals (I worked in the food/service industry for years!!) but it was actually inedible. Melinda came over and took care of everything and our second steak was done to perfection. This could have gone in a different direction, but Max Downtown took care of the problem immediately and gracefully! We would absolutely come back for another meal and definitely request to be seated in Melinda’s section!
Great dining experience, lovely atmosphere and good customer service oriented ethical staff. We (me and my date) were very impressed with the high level of service and the concurrent and immediate response to correct any hint of dissatisfaction. Max Downtown in my book will continue for a very long time to remain best of Hartford.
They forgot our appetizers. The manager apologized. Then they forgot our side dishes with our main. The manager apologized and promised they would be out in two minutes. They never arrived. The manager apologized and offered free cookies and made a big deal of not charging us for the items we never got. He should have complemented the whole meal since they forgot three out of six items ordered. $170 for a poor meal. I have eaten here numerous times and the service just keeps getting worse. I have recommended it several times to friends. I won't anymore. I waited 15 minutes for the valet to get my car while we stood at the curb freezing. I should have parked it myself. He kept apologizing but I still waited longer than anyone coming out after me. Totally disappointed!!!! Ruined a special night for our family. I come from Vancouver eight times a year and always eat here at least twice per trip. I think it's time to find a new place since my patronage is not valued.
Dinner was great. Only complaint is that restaurant is so popular, had dinner reservations for 7:30, did not get seated until 8:30. Not Max fault, customers staying longer than planned. Max provided very delicious pasta dish on the house for the wait. Place looks good since the renovation and will visit again in the future
Knowing that a dinner for two will end up costing at least $200, I would still go and say it is worth it. This is one on a very short list of restaurants in the area that can happily get me to pay that price. Great food and service, though the city of Hartford struggles to match the class of Max Downtown. That being said, steak, seafood you name it 5 stars
My 15-year old niece and I were here for an early dinner. Our server Ryan was awesome, so nice, very accommodating, explained everything. My niece has allergies and he went over the ingredients to make sure none of them would affect her.
The food was great. I had seasonal specials of Sweet Potato soup and a great pork chop with a very tasty celery root puree. My niece had a burger which she loved and a huge Caesar salad which she kept saying was so good. Then we had some awesome desserts. I had an apple Crostada with cinnamon ice cream, YUM. My niece had baked Alaska since she had never tried it before and she kept commenting on each bite how good it was.
Max Downtown recently renovated their restaurant, creating a more subdued atmosphere. While well known for its steaks, we appreciate the variety of dining offerings, which include some excellent fish and seafood items. My wife enjoyed the salmon, and I had the fluke, which was a special for the day. Both were outstanding. Our server was enthusiastic and helpful, making sure we didn't have to rush at the end to make it to the theatre on time.
The food and service are truly outstanding. The beef fillet was the best I have ever had in a restaurant. The wait person was very accommodating and pleasant. The parker house type rolls were also excellent. The prices are high, however. At least they have free parking in their building.
Renovation has updated max Downtown. However the addition of wood floors, tables without cloths and the updated décor have significantly raised the noise level. We had difficulty conversing due to the overall high din of the new restaurant. Understand the décor was completed to attract a young crowd, however, it is no longer the place for a special occasion celebration.
Max Downtown is Marvelous! The renovations are exceptional, very classy, the wooden floors are just right, the wooden tables add heft and clean lines, and the new lighting and drapery bring the space Into the 21st century! I love it! The food was fantastic. As a Vegan, I asked the chef to surprise me and he did! My entree was delicious with intricate flavors and contrasting textures making it a delight! My compatriots had the Brazino and loved it. If you haven’t been to Max Downtown in a while, hurry in to experience the NEW Max Downtown! This flagship of the Max Restsurants is flying high, so catch a ride!!!
We have been loyal Max customers for years and have the Max Rewards card. We waited for renovations to complete over the summer months and wanted to go back to our special place. This was the worst dining experience we have encountered in decades!!! We requested a booth when the reservation was made and confirmed this request at reception. We were placed at a regular table and told they were very busy and that a booth was unavailable by the hostess even though 2 booths were open right behind us. The waiter was asked by my wife if the new menu included the same sides as before and was told no. He stated that everything was ala carte. She ordered a side of asparagus and when the meal arrived it came with the asparagus. Now she had two servings. The crowd grew as there was a concert that night at the XL. The noise was soo bad we could not have a conversation without shouting. The stated dress code was totally ignored by the staff and people were wearing everything from sleeveless shirts to costumes. The drinks requested were absolutely awful!! After being told they couldn't(or wouldn't) make my wife's request they brought a rum punch that tasted like vodka and cranberry juice. The screwdriver I ordered tasted like Sunny D. The gluten free bread was soo dry I could not choke it down even with their special butter. We were so disgusted with the service, noise, rude customers(one who wanted to open our champagne), that we just wanted to get out of there. Steve Abrams who is the managing partner tried to apologize as we waited for our car, but the damage was done. We will not be returning to Max's Downtown anytime soon!!! Absolutely unacceptable service, unbearable atmosphere and terrible drinks will surely put this place out of business soon. Anyone looking for a real fine dining experience in Hartford should try the Capitol Grill.
Great restaurant with exceptional service and amazing food. This was an ideal place for dinner before the concert that we went to as it is located just a few steps away from the XL Center. We had plenty of time to enjoy catching up among friends and our food was served in a reasonable amount of time. I have been here twice and will definitely be back!
We had a fun birthday celebration for my son and his friend during a college Family weekend! I'd highly recommend this restaurant for its food, great service and ambiance. My husband and son loved their steaks and I had delicious scallops. The wine list was strong and I appreciated them decanting the bottle. Our server Liz made the meal even more special. Don't miss Max's!
I love this restaurant and how friendly everyone is. I drove from NJ just to go out there and have some of their amazing mashed potatoes (silly I know) but they are the absolute best. when I got there they did tell me that they did remove them from the menu, but that if I did call ahead they would prep them for me next time. I do love that they are so accommodating and that they make just the most delicious food ever. recommend the salmon and the crème Brule.
