About Max Downtown
If ever there were a showplace for dining in Hartford, it is Max Downtown.
Situated as the centerpiece of Hartford’s downtown business center, it has been guided to preeminence by owners Richard Rosenthal and Steve Abrams.
Providing outstanding dining, service and atmosphere, Max Downtown offers a trend-setting atmosphere for more than 300 patrons daily. It has earned a 25 or “excellent” from Zagat’s Survey, a “Best New Restaurant” from Connecticut Magazine, more than six Reader’s Choice awards from Connecticut Magazine and 4-stars from The Hartford Courant’s Northeast Magazine.
Internationally inspired dishes and other regional and traditional fare create a menu unlike any other in Connecticut. “It’s more than a Classic Chop House,” says Rosenthal. "We create dishes for people with a passion for dining.”

Max Downtown Ratings and Reviews
Marvelous Max Downtown!!! The renovations are spectacular. The food is fantastic. The service is sensational! Max Downtown has the best reputation and it t is well deserved! It is THE restaurant against which all other fine dining restaurants in the greater metro area are judged! If you haven’t yet experienced dining here... do it as soon as you can. Happy Holidays!!!
The Max group seems to always have just the right formula. Their newly renovated downtown Hartford space is beautiful. The service is friendly and the servers are knowledgeable. Our lamb merguaze (sp) appetizer was very good. We tried the short rib, sirloin, salmon & shrimp entrees. All were flavorful, cooked well and nicely presented. It's worth the price for your "big city" experience.
Service was Great!!! Very friendly staff and knowledgeable. Nice ambience.
2 dinners were excellent, two were not...
They try to do too much. Great cuts of beef, but sauces and marinades alter the natural taste. No need. Everyone loves a good steak or prime rib. Pastrami and prime rib combo?
Baked Alaska not baked! Shouldn’t offer if need to take shortcuts. Very pricey. All in all... it was a fun evening but probably won’t be back or recommend... maybe just for drinks.
We go to this rest restaurant about 3 to 4 times a year and normally her quite pleased. However on December 7 the place was overcrowded and the service And he wait staff overstretched. Our waitress came up and apologized for the lack of attention at least three times. When our wine order was finally delivered we had already eaten our appetizers salads. It was also was two years younger than the vintage I had ordered which happens in many restaurants. It took at least another 10 minutes for a replacement bottle to be delivered. However after the first pour no one bothered to comeback to refill our glasses. Bottom line we felt ignored. Not good for a restaurant the charges this kind of money.
I m from Napa,California and when back east for my business, Max s is the best. A halfway point for me to meet with business partners from Boston when in NYC. I have had this lunch meeting at least half a dozen times over the past few years and never been disappointed. The atmosphere is perfect for this type of meeting, the food awesome, and the service wonderful! Thank you all at Max s 👍😀
The redesigned Max Downtown is absolutely stunning. The food and service keep up with the decor. The bar has an incredible selection of wines and (my choice) single malts. Although the restaurant was mobbed after a UConn game, we were seated even before our scheduled time, and the noise levels were quite reasonable for conversation.
The service, both in the bar and at our table, was exceptional. We never wanted for anything.
The food was beautifully served and delicious. Our party had ahi tuna, steak, scallops and chicken. All were excellent. The waiter talked us into a plate of cookies for dessert and we were very glad he did.
We will definitely be back often.
It was great, but I had put on the reservation that it was for a birthday (my 60th) and no one asked about it, so nothing special was done. In the past "Happy Birthday" was written in chocolate on the plate of my dessert, so I was a little bit disappointed.
Food was fine, but not worth the price. I just thought the crab cocktail did not warrant $17.00 and the ribeye was not flavorful enough to cost me $49.00. I did think the servers and the ambiance were the restaurant's strong suit, but when you're rating a restaurant is that can make up for food that is just ok?
We came to Max Downtown for the first time on Saturday. Everything was going well...we had a phenomenal server, Melinda, who was really great at making suggestions and answering all of our questions. We had a bit of a problem when our steak came out and it was clearly (by look and taste) burnt/charred on the outside. I’m usually not one to complain about meals (I worked in the food/service industry for years!!) but it was actually inedible. Melinda came over and took care of everything and our second steak was done to perfection. This could have gone in a different direction, but Max Downtown took care of the problem immediately and gracefully! We would absolutely come back for another meal and definitely request to be seated in Melinda’s section!
Great dining experience, lovely atmosphere and good customer service oriented ethical staff. We (me and my date) were very impressed with the high level of service and the concurrent and immediate response to correct any hint of dissatisfaction. Max Downtown in my book will continue for a very long time to remain best of Hartford.
They forgot our appetizers. The manager apologized. Then they forgot our side dishes with our main. The manager apologized and promised they would be out in two minutes. They never arrived. The manager apologized and offered free cookies and made a big deal of not charging us for the items we never got. He should have complemented the whole meal since they forgot three out of six items ordered. $170 for a poor meal. I have eaten here numerous times and the service just keeps getting worse. I have recommended it several times to friends. I won't anymore. I waited 15 minutes for the valet to get my car while we stood at the curb freezing. I should have parked it myself. He kept apologizing but I still waited longer than anyone coming out after me. Totally disappointed!!!! Ruined a special night for our family. I come from Vancouver eight times a year and always eat here at least twice per trip. I think it's time to find a new place since my patronage is not valued.
Dinner was great. Only complaint is that restaurant is so popular, had dinner reservations for 7:30, did not get seated until 8:30. Not Max fault, customers staying longer than planned. Max provided very delicious pasta dish on the house for the wait. Place looks good since the renovation and will visit again in the future
Knowing that a dinner for two will end up costing at least $200, I would still go and say it is worth it. This is one on a very short list of restaurants in the area that can happily get me to pay that price. Great food and service, though the city of Hartford struggles to match the class of Max Downtown. That being said, steak, seafood you name it 5 stars
My 15-year old niece and I were here for an early dinner. Our server Ryan was awesome, so nice, very accommodating, explained everything. My niece has allergies and he went over the ingredients to make sure none of them would affect her.
The food was great. I had seasonal specials of Sweet Potato soup and a great pork chop with a very tasty celery root puree. My niece had a burger which she loved and a huge Caesar salad which she kept saying was so good. Then we had some awesome desserts. I had an apple Crostada with cinnamon ice cream, YUM. My niece had baked Alaska since she had never tried it before and she kept commenting on each bite how good it was.
