Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.

Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

This means, the dishes are chosen by our chef and team to give you the full Mawn experience. All dishes are served family style and explained as they are brought to the table. Specials and oysters are not included but may be added on as well as any other dishes.

I’d been waiting for my chance to get a seat at Mawn for a long time, so my expectations were high for my first experience. They blew those expectations out of the water. Everything was incredibly flavorful and interesting, and the whole fish was one of the best I’ve ever had. The service was perfect from the knowledgeable staff; they made everything sound so appetizing that it was tough to choose! I’m glad my friend and I decided to do the Puck and See because that took the stress away from picking dishes. We ended up with the ginger & melon salad, wild boar dip, ribeye skewers, whole fish, khao soi noodles, and the funnel cake. Amazing experience, I’m already excited for the next chance I get to eat at Mawn!!!

I had very high expectations for the very hard to get reservation at Mawn and BOY my expectations were met and exceeded. HIGHLY recommend. I will be returning. Everything about the meal, the staff, and the vibe was exquisite.

The food was excellent as was the service. We did the Puck and See tasting. Emmanuel was a great server! He explained everything and chatted with us about what were his favorites. It was a great experience! If you’re lucky enough to get a reservation I say GO!! I can’t wait to go back! (If I can get a reservation!)

Great food plus friendly, attentive and knowledgeable staff! Love the vibes. The beef noodle katiew soup was a highlight in addition to the crab fried rice. They do not skimp on the crab! Got our fish grilled - the better preparation IMO. Worthy of the hype!

As always at Mawn the food and service is hard to beat. We go just about monthly and have only ever had great experiences.

From the starter scallop appetizer through the whole 4 dish meal the flavors were unique with just the right amount of heat. Affordable, flavorful, tasteful and meaningful soul food. A dining experience I’ve not had in a while. Should I say “standing room only”. HOT. In demand. … check check check Date night. Three thumbs up guys and gals!!! Excellent time. Thanks again. Will be back!!
