Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.

Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

Clearly one of the top restaurants in the Philly, let alone the US. Unique flavor combinations that you really don't find anywhere else, which is both surprising and absolutely delicious. I keep coming back to try new dishes. Special, unpretentious, bold. A must go kinda place.

Worth the hype - the staff is AMAZING and knows all about the menu items. Plus the food is great. Our favorite dishes are the all star fried rice and steak and prohok, so don’t miss out!

Amazing service! The ramen two was phenomenal for me that’s a must get. The atmosphere was very homey.

Our second visit tonight and already looking forward to the next. Melon salad is so good, meat stick melts in your mouth! Fried chicken is spicy if u like that u will enjoy it. The service is great, very friendly and helpful choosing items that will work with your spice level. The only bad thing is it is so hard to get a reservation for more than 2 people. Worth going to!!

I’d been waiting for my chance to get a seat at Mawn for a long time, so my expectations were high for my first experience. They blew those expectations out of the water. Everything was incredibly flavorful and interesting, and the whole fish was one of the best I’ve ever had. The service was perfect from the knowledgeable staff; they made everything sound so appetizing that it was tough to choose! I’m glad my friend and I decided to do the Puck and See because that took the stress away from picking dishes. We ended up with the ginger & melon salad, wild boar dip, ribeye skewers, whole fish, khao soi noodles, and the funnel cake. Amazing experience, I’m already excited for the next chance I get to eat at Mawn!!!

I had very high expectations for the very hard to get reservation at Mawn and BOY my expectations were met and exceeded. HIGHLY recommend. I will be returning. Everything about the meal, the staff, and the vibe was exquisite.
