Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.

Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

As usual, our food at Mawn was DELICIOUS! We got something new this time, wild boar prohok dip, and it had such a wonderful flavor profile and just the right touch of lemongrass. We both got Khao Soi for our entrees and shared an order of fried chicken. The Arianna agua fresca was very refreshing and cantaloupe flavored! I was excited about eating here all week and they never disappoint. The staff always remember us and Emmanuel always takes good care of us!

My family all live overseas so I don’t get to eat much Cambodian food anymore, so to be able to experience the food I grew up with was not only nostalgic, but the flavours and dining experience exceeded my expectations! The oxtail noodles were so similar to my father’s I nearly cried when I tasted it. I honestly never thought I’d eat Prahok again! It was all so delicious. It’s apparent that Chef and team put so much thought in every item on the menu. I appreciate that I could take my boyfriend to experience Cambodian food for the first time at a place like Mawn, and can’t wait to dine there again with everyone I know!

the food and the service is incredible. we went twice in a month; the puck and see is an ABSURD value. we left overstuffed and thrilled.
