Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.

Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

The food was excellent as was the service. We did the Puck and See tasting. Emmanuel was a great server! He explained everything and chatted with us about what were his favorites. It was a great experience! If you’re lucky enough to get a reservation I say GO!! I can’t wait to go back! (If I can get a reservation!)

Great food plus friendly, attentive and knowledgeable staff! Love the vibes. The beef noodle katiew soup was a highlight in addition to the crab fried rice. They do not skimp on the crab! Got our fish grilled - the better preparation IMO. Worthy of the hype!

From the starter scallop appetizer through the whole 4 dish meal the flavors were unique with just the right amount of heat. Affordable, flavorful, tasteful and meaningful soul food. A dining experience I’ve not had in a while. Should I say “standing room only”. HOT. In demand. … check check check Date night. Three thumbs up guys and gals!!! Excellent time. Thanks again. Will be back!!

Food was amazing! We had the chicken skin, beef noodle soup katiew with egg, fried chicken and khao soi. I loved the beef noodle soup katiew. It’s like a pho broth with a richer taste. The couple next to us was kind enough to offer their banh chow salad after we offered our chicken skin. That was good as well. I would definitely go back but maybe for lunch since it took a month to book this reservation.
